Luca chuckled softly. Books were his weakness, they always had been since he learned how to read. It was a comfort. Having left the bookstore he created back in Vancouver behind, it was nice to find one again in La Jolla. “Perhaps. I’ve always gravitated towards larger cities. It’s interesting to see though. I very much so enjoy the quality of things here. It’s soothing.”

     Zane listened intently, he had always been curious about city life. He had never experienced it in all his years - only having moved from one small town to the next.

     "Where are you from?" he asked, "I've always been curious about city folk and culture as I've never had the opportunity to live in one!"

Madison didn’t really know what to do with all her time off. As her belly kept growing, the brunette needed to find hobbies that could keep her busy once she was unable to actually work at the hospital. One of the things that she wanted to try out was one of the painting classes. She couldn’t help but wish that she had her husband’s talent, him able to paint anything easily. Standing around in the bookstore with her hand resting on her stomach, the Hungarian found books that she wanted to get, one about raising twins. 

As she heard a voice behind her, the brunette gave a small jump, smiling as she looked at the man in front of her. “Hi. Madison. I did want to get these before it starts. I need things to do since pregnancy kind of prevents me from doing some things.” She handed the books to him as she looked around before trying to move one of the easels to a spot. “I haven’t seen you around before, but I am still somewhat new to the area. Were you born here?” The Hungarian asked him with a small smile as she moved to sit down on the chair.

     Zane watched as a glowing woman waltzed through his bookstore, grabbing a couple of books before reaching him. He acknowledged the request she gave him, politely taking the books from her arms and helping her into one of the chairs.

     "You are glowing!" he said, smiling at her, "I do hope this will be a stress free environment for you and your little one," he motioned lightly to her stomach.

     He went on to acknowledge her other questions, "No, I wasn't born here. I’m actually from a small town in Arizona. Many people don't know about it, but it was perfectly quaint for business and I learned a lot. I do miss it. How long have you been here?"

Even after a year of living in La Jolla Marco still felt as if he didn’t have enough of a connection to the community. He’d moved to Chicago when he was thirteen, having no choice but to build a connection with the city as he spent half of his childhood growing in it.

There was an obvious difference in moving somewhere as a child and moving somewhere as an adult. No matter how much he and Madison fell in love with California he hadn’t found his own place there, besides the home he had created as the head of a restaurant that had grown rather popular in the seaside city. In his off hours he spent time with his wife and children, neglecting to take the time for himself to explore and find a niche for himself in La Jolla.

A prime opportunity came when Marco stumbled upon a sign up sheet for a painters’ night at a local bookstore. He’d snagged a spot at the end of the list after debating on signing up, afraid he would be rusty after concentrating on renovating businesses instead of his paintings for months. The place seemed comfortable and welcoming the night of the gathering, Marco staying to himself and quietly observing the other nineteen people that had signed up while he grabbed a spot at an easel and checked his phone for messages, the feeling of being away from his family foreign to him.

Seeing the owner and host of the night come near, Marco tucked his phone into his pocket and decided to speak up. He didn’t know why he felt uneasy, his personality normally boisterous and confident. Had domestic life really taken a toll on that part of him? “It’s a nice place you have here,” said the Italian, that subtle hint of Chicago ringing in his Venetian accent.

     Zane smiled at the man who had recently taken an empty seat in front of an easel. "I'm glad you like it," Zane said, "I only hope that you all are able to benefit from this night." He paused and tilted his head, "You seem a bit stressed. Why is that?"

Bobbi knew she was probably making him uncomfortable but she liked doing that to people. “he can afford it. He just chooses non to with his cheap ass. And then he tried to ask if her could stay the night,”

     Zane paused and studied the woman for a second, wondering why she was still interacting with him. He had hoped his shortened reply would virtually end the conversation, but he was unsuccessful.

     "What a pitiful man," he said, clearly unimpressed, "Who is she?" Though his head desired to end the conversation, he was intrigued with curiosity.

Paint Nite

     Zane stood in the midst of his bookstore and pondered for a second before holding his palms out vertically in front of him. "Paint night!" he exclaimed to himself, catching weird glances from those who had been looking through his store. He ducked his head and apologized before heading into the back room. 

      There he began to organize the event, hiring an artist to help teach those who wished to learn, printing posters, and the likes. The next morning, he posted the posters around town and waited to hear from those who were interested. There was a limited amount of space and he knew the demand in the town would be high. Who wouldn't want to express themselves via art? He thought, We live in a town of brilliance! 

      It wasn't long before the paint night came. His list was full - all 20 people had signed up for it! As he walked into the store, he felt the relaxed ambiance he had always dreamed of. There were “Christmas lights” hanging in various areas of the store and tons of cozy places for people to read. Soft couches, cushioned chairs, and even little decorated side cubbies with windows.Now, in the place of most of the tables, sat numerous easels ready to be worked on.  Classical music played quietly in the background.

     He began to compile books on painting when the bookstore's door rang as someone ventured inside. He sat the books down on one of the nearby tables and strolled up to the guest. "Hi there, my name is Zane and I will be hosting this event! Feel free to take a look around as the bookstore is still open and you are welcome to read any of the books while you are here. Also, please don't hesitate to grab an easel and take a seat where you'd like," he said, motioning to all of the empty seats around him, "I hope you'll find comfort here."

“I’m surprised by how fast things have gotten done here, even if the house wasn’t ready in time, my bakery is almost done and should be by the time I’m done unpacking the house. Things seem to move faster here than Chicago interesting enough.

     Though Zane was typically shy, something about his bookstore gave him comfort and confidence. It was home and he appreciated that others were able to call it home as well. A man he had recently became an acquaintance of sat across from him on one of the couches located around the store. The book titled THE STAND rested in Zane's lap as he spoke softly to the man across from him - trying to be respectful to others in the room.

     "I guess this town moves fast sometimes. I'm from a small town like this in Arizona, so I don't notice the difference as much," he sighed, "Though I suppose small town folk work faster and harder than MOST people from the city." Zane tapped his book lightly, "We just want to get things done around here!"

Bobbi turned to look over the divider between booths. “I’m sorry, I must have been talking too loud. But yeah he was a cheap skate even if he is a lawyer,”

     Zane slid the book onto the booth's table, its pages still open to where he had left off. He slid down into the booth a little, uncomfortable with the newfound attention he had gained. He was, however, surprised. His brows raised, then narrowed, "A lawyer?" he paused, "How can a lawyer not afford dinner? Clearly the cases aren't working out for him." Zane sighed, "What a loser. I think you escaped unscathed then. Probably for the best." He reached for his book again.

“I did not get dressed up to go on a date with a guy who could’t even afford his meal. I don’t date scrubs,” Bobbi ranted before taking a sip of her wine.

     Zane walked into the higher class restaurant, his tense shoulders and discontent glare made it clear to those in the room that he had no interest in interacting with anyone. He sat down in one of the corner booths, pondering why he had chosen to go out tonight when he could stayed away from all of these people. As he sat down, he pulled out a book titled The Stand and began to read. 

     It wasn’t long before a waitress came by and prepared to take his order. He was unsure how to pronounce the meal he wanted, so he simply pointed at it on the menu and said, “With Sprite, please,” before sliding the menu to the end of the table and reopening his book. Before he could even sink into it, he heard a woman muttering in the booth ahead of him. He raised his eyebrow, his curiosity slightly piqued. He listened carefully before muttering, “What a cheap guy,” though his voice was louder than he had thought and he didn’t intend for her to hear it.
