He fell in love with her smile. She made it look effortless to be so happy and kind. It took him no time at all to fall in love with the rest of her.
Most days she was bright, telling Jeff about the leaves or the sunrise, or how his floppy hair always reminds her of some 90's boy band.
She grabbed his hand and pulled him up, forcing him to dance with her. He hated to dance, but loved watching her, loved hearing her giggles and seeing that flawless smile. That was most days.
Every once in a while, she would take a few days off from life.
She would curl up in a ball and cry, hide under the blankets, stare at the wall for hours. Her smile was gone, as were all of her giggles and funny remarks.
The first time Jeff had seen this he didn't know what to do. He thought she was breaking up with him, so he left her alone. She crawled her way out and told him about her depression. "Sometimes I just need to start over, or pause, or sleep." She explained, only understanding her feelings in hindsight. "I can only be happy for so long, and then I need to recharge." She didn't think he'd understand, she thought he would break up with her and leave like many a boy in the past.
But Jeff was different. He hugged her and then looked her in the eye and said "You have to go through bad times to appreciate the good ones, and I'll be here for you through all of it." And so he was.
He'd been through this a few times with her, so he noticed the signs of her mood changing. He washed the blankets so they smelled good and made a little list of calm movies for her to watch and bought a few snacks and her favorite type of tea.
He left her be as he went out to film with David and his friends. He did this for a few days, coming home and hugging her while she slept, before going off to David's again in the morning.
He knew how she felt. She felt empty, like there was nothing inside her, like she couldn't move or do anything. He knew she just needed to rest.
After almost a week he knew she needed to get back up again, so he told everyone he was busy and spent the whole day with her.
"One thing. You only have to do one thing at a time." Jeff's thumb brushed her cheek as he handed her a glass of water. He made her eat a real meal and then let her rest for an hour. He dragged her out of bed with nice little whispers, humming some song she liked as he got her in the bathtub.
She cried a little bit, the feeling of nothingness slowly starting to dissipate as he washed her hair and cleaned her off. He couldn't help but smile as she started to hum again, humming with him for the first time in a week.
Jeff got her dressed. "One thing at a time." Jeff brushed her hair. "One thing at a time." Jeff tucked her into bed. "One thing at a time."
And when he woke up the next morning, the first thing he saw was her smile staring back at him, and he fell in love all over again.
