Activity 4: Final Design
Final Design for SIT+ Store solution including render ideas
SIT + STORE: Technical Drawings
Activity 4: Ergonomics
> Ergonomic Consideration
It is important to research and explore anthropometry in order to understand the relationship between the Human scale and Design concepts. However, exploring the issues of Ergonomics when designing the SIT+STORE product.
Ergonomic Dimensions
Human Figure Anthropometry
Ergonomics
The design idea shows the relationship between the bench and the human figure. i am able to look at the scale and develop Technical drawings for the design.
Activity 4: Function +Usage
Function & Usage
A Designing a multipurpose solution that is easy to construct, simple and comfortable to use. The design solution can have transformed from a bench to an accessible storage which can either be mounted or used on the ground. The SIT+STORE is designed to be flexible and adaptable to each individual needs, there is no one size fits all about this solution. Each Sit Store is designed individually, making it unique to its owner. My design for SIT + STORE is not limited to the two-person bench; Extra modules can be added to suite every spatial limitations and needs.
Design
Bench > Shelves > coffee Table
Activity 4: Materials+Construction
Materials + Construction
A 3 sections wood constructed design using repeated pieces that connect to the furniture like a jigsaw puzzle. it does not have any hinges or dowels to connect the pieces together. it is a freestanding design that can be constructed and reconstructed in many ways. Wood is a strong and durable material that can be crafted machined in a number of ways.
Addition felt accessory to add comfort to the seat whilst being aesthetically modern and suit any interior design solutions.
Birch Plywood
Birch plywood has unique characteristics that will benefit my design.
Key advantages:
Great strength to weight ratio.
Smooth surfaces, whilst having a textured layered core. Great for adding surface veneers.
Strong and durable properties
Lightweight
easy to machine and form
Felt Cushions
Felt is a cheap easy to find material that can be sew, cut, and transformed into desired space very easily. i intend to use this material in my SIT+STORE design, as a way to accessorize and create a personalised individuality for each piece.
Woven wool Cushions crochet
Simple lattice structure knitted with wool an added accent for any type of furniture. its naturally soft properties will infuse comfort into my design.
Activity 4: Design Development
Design Development
A SIT+STORE solution that is a 3 Part constructed bench>shelf solution. It can be configured to seat 2+ people, as well as more storage solutions.
Activity 4: Design Ideas
>Inspiration
When analysing the design brief, I plan the project, whilst making a note of my initial thoughts and motivations towards the project. From there I am able to look for inspirations in existing product design, become aware of the new technologies involved in the design industry. Latest trends i.e. Minimalist, flat packed, Portable, Colourful, Recyclable materials/ products.
>Mood board
Mood board inspired by Multipurpose furniture that transforms from one use to another using wood as main material.
By researching existing design solutions, I am able to analyse the practical elements that would be beneficial part of the Design process. I am able to draw content from my research to better understand the different design options I have to create the sit and store product.
Going through the various stages of the initial research and concept process has allowed me to refine and develop my methods towards the processes and design strategies.
> Initial Design idea
This design idea is inspiration comes from the concept of having treated patterns/ elements that come together to form a solid shape. By having the connected pieces make for easy construction. the 3 main elements to this design is the seat frame that forms the shape of seat. the connecting planes that bring the bench elements together and the seat and back rest that is designed to support the back and legs based on the curved shape of chair.
Activity 4: Design Concept
Design an innovative ‘Sit+Store’ solution using a range of creative techniques and design processes.
Initial Concepts
When coming up with a design solution for a Sit + Store Product. There are many considerations and processes to investigate and Refine during the design process.
The dimensions of the product in terms of the relationship between the human figure when looking and ergonomics and antropometrics Factors, are crucial part of evaluating the function and usability of the product.
Design Paths to explore:
Dimensions > Ergonomics > Construction > Contextual Aesthetics > Materiality
The Design concept behind the SIT-STORE is “Serial Planes”. The idea that you can take any shape and repeated over a Plane which can be a line or volume. The flexibility of this that you can re-arrange to become something else. Using one or two planes, is a better solution for creating a sustainable design.
>Initial Planes Study
Exploring how you can dissect a shape and create multiple planes in different formations.
Pearl shaped revolving form
Creating a plane using curved shape shows movement and revolving shape that can be trans formed into a solid shape.
Studies of how to use repeating shapes to create planes that can be constructed to for a single module. Influenced my design approach through studying the construction elements of how using a 2-part plane can for a bench and rotated to form a storage shelve hanging or free–standing.
Activity 2: Blog Research

To design a unique element of Free-standing furniture for ‘Sit+Store’. Which combines the opportunity to sit and rest whilst providing a space in which to store books, Magazines and other home/work media. The item would be placed in an existing space, possible home or work space. Successful design solutions will be easy to construct either flat packed, a kit or a modular to enable customisation and adaptability.
Design Process & Documentation
Design process will be documented through an online digital blog which will communicate the journey of the project right from the beginning of the process through to the research, design process and final outcome.
What are the advantages and disadvantages for using web as communicating design ideas?
Advantages
· Allows user and designer interaction through the web.
· During development stages the web creates a clear channel for communication between target audience and designer so that the designer may understand their target audience and the audience to be an active participant of the design process.
· The designer can seek feedback and critique of design so that they may create a more successful solution for the design process.
· Using the web as a way to communicate ideas may also open up opportunities for collaborations with other designers/artists/ prospective clients.
· Another positive is to share theories, critiques and views about cultural and contextual designs.
Disadvantages
· It becomes easier for people to use your ideas as their own.
· You would have to adapt the size of files and content to suit the web. Which may be time consuming. Now with mobile phones being at almost everyone’s finger tips, providing a mobile supported content is another key thing to consider.
· Your intellectual property becomes easily assessed by everyone who can access the web.
· You may be targeted by people who are not on the web with very good intensions. Who only desire is to be negative and insightful.
How does using the web for presenting design ideas differ from the more traditional forms of communication?
Using the web for presenting design ideas is different from more traditional forms of communication, as it combines the characteristics of the 4 different types of communicators: visual, Auditory, kinaesthetic, and Auditory digital. Presenting on the web you are using a variety of methods to communicate your ideas such as video, images, physical (prompting interaction) and audio, written elements, diagrams.
With traditional communications can appear to be one sided and 2D in presentation. Whereas on the web it becomes interactive which can be seen in a 3D/4D element whilst haven’t an open forum for other designers and artists to communicate thought and ideas. This is similar to having a collaborative space where designers share ideas for projects in a design firm. The web provides a similar platform but on a much larger scale.
What IT skills do I already have that will be useful for this project?
I have basic HTML, CSS skills which I picked up during Facebook app course I took, and also occasionally revisit it using codecademy to learn new skills. I also have interest with Internet marketing and how they use social tools to promote websites and user experience.
What IT skills do I need to learn for this project?
I would like to learn, video editing and how to shoot videos that I could possibly use in my future projects in my education and professional career. I would also love to learn how to design WordPress or visual templates for my blog to suit my design identity and branding.
Summary
This project is a great introduction to furniture design and using web 2.0 to share ideas and to develop myself as a professional designer. During this project I intend to experiment with video, model-making and considering working in 1:1 scale and develop physical products that would go towards my personal development and contribution to design in my generation of design.
Alongside this I wish to start thinking about my identity and branding as a designer, through blogging and social interaction on the web. To share my ideas as well as interact with artists alike.
