“Was Ney a crybaby?”
(Roustam Raza)
The following passage is from the memoirs of Roustam Raza. It mentions Ney’s skillful withdrawal maneuver at Guttstadt prior to the Battle of Friedland. Although Guttstadt was not a defeat, Ney shed tears (tears of frustration?) in front of Napoleon. Was Ney a crybaby?
〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜
One day, an aide-de-camp of Marshal Ney arrived to inform the Emperor that the Russians had attacked Marshal Ney's corps with forty thousand men, and that the marshal had retreated fifteen leagues without losing a single cannon or soldier.
Within two days, the Emperor had assembled his army and set out himself to take command, as he did every day.
The Emperor left for Marshal Ney's headquarters, arriving at eleven o'clock in the evening. He received the marshal and said to him, laughing: "What, Marshal Ney, you let the Russians defeat you?" The marshal replied, "Sire, I swear on my word of honour that it was not my fault. They attacked me unexpectedly, with great force, and I had very few men at that moment!"
I could see tears welling up in the marshal's eyes. He was not too happy about having retreated.
The Emperor said to Marshal Ney as they dined together, "It's nothing; we'll make up for that mistake!"
Roustam, Caulaincourt, and the discord of the horse.
So, this is from Roustam’s Memoirs. Roustam recounts how on occasions, he was excluded from parades for no reason, even if the emperor issued strict orders that said otherwise. This takes place in the preparations for Napoleon’s coronation.
