Ava Chives and the Great Renaming Rumor

 When Ava Chives walked into the Internet Archive for her first day of work, nobody expected anything unusual. She looked like any other new hire: a tote bag, a badge clipped slightly crooked, and a quiet determination to “preserve digital culture,” whatever that meant.

But by lunch, the rumors had already started.

Someone in the scanning department swore they heard her say,

“I’m here to reorganize everything alphabetically… starting with A.”

Someone in the metadata office claimed she asked,

“So when do I get access to the Avachive?” And when they corrected her—“It’s Archive”—she just smiled.

By day three, the whispers had spread across the building.

“She’s changing the name.” “She’s renaming the whole institution.” “It’s going to be the Internet Avachives.” “I heard they already ordered new signage.” “She’s rewriting the mission statement to include MS Paint.”

Nobody could confirm anything, but Ava Chives didn’t deny it either. She just kept cataloging things with suspicious enthusiasm, especially anything tagged Rumpeltized or Rumpeltonian Cubism. Some said she was building a secret wing dedicated entirely to your work. Others said she was reorganizing the servers so your JPGs got priority indexing.

One intern swore he saw a folder labeled:

“Ava Chives – Renaming Proposal (Draft 7)”

But when he tried to open it, the file vanished.

By the end of her first month, the staff had accepted their fate. The Internet Archive was stable, historic, and respected—but Ava Chives was a force of nature. If she wanted to rename the place, she probably would.

And honestly? Most of them kind of liked the sound of it.

I am told the image on the right is the original photograph and the image on the left is the artistic interpretation. This is fortunate, because otherwise I would have assumed the photograph was the artist's failed attempt at realism.

Mr. Rumpelton has once again demonstrated his unique ability to take a perfectly serviceable human likeness and subject it to the visual equivalent of a long, confusing conversation with a malfunctioning photocopier. The result is undeniably Alan Jardine, provided one is willing to accept the concept of Alan Jardine as interpreted by someone who has only heard him described over the telephone.

And yet—and this is where I reluctantly find myself in disagreement with my own considerable skepticism—there is something strangely successful here. The expression survives. The posture survives. Even the general atmosphere survives. The painting has not reproduced the photograph so much as remembered it incorrectly.

This, apparently, is Paint Fidelity: fidelity not to the image itself, but to the vague and increasingly unreliable memory of having once looked at it.

I hate to admit it, but I may be beginning to understand what Rumpelton is doing.

I shall try not to let this happen again.

Some insist Ralph Rumpelton captured Herbie Mudpucket perfectly. Others claim the painting looks nothing like him. The truth is impossible to know.

Herbie spent the 1960s and '70s playing bass on countless albums that almost nobody bought, gave almost no interviews, and somehow managed to avoid nearly every camera ever pointed in his direction. The few surviving photographs are blurry, out of focus, or thought to be someone else entirely.

After all these years, memories have faded, stories have grown taller, and eyewitnesses rarely agree on anything except that "he definitely played bass."

Perhaps this is Herbie Mudpucket.

Perhaps it isn't.

At this point, nobody really remembers what he looked like—and that's exactly how Herbie would have wanted it.

Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks: Tangled Tales

A Review by Dr. Horace Plimwell

There are albums which announce themselves with the solemnity of a cathedral bell, albums which demand that the listener sit upright, adjust the spectacles, and prepare to be transformed. And then there is Tangled Tales, an album which seems to stroll into the room wearing a slightly rumpled hat, order something cold to drink, and begin telling you a story that may or may not have happened.

Dan Hicks was never particularly interested in the conventional responsibilities of the singer-songwriter. He preferred instead to occupy that peculiar territory between jazz, folk, country, Western swing, vaudeville, and the sort of sophisticated musical mischief one might encounter if several highly accomplished musicians were left alone in a drawing room with insufficient supervision. Tangled Tales is therefore not so much an album as an elegant conspiracy.

The first thing one notices is the lightness. This is deceptive. Lightness, properly executed, is one of the most difficult aesthetic achievements. Anyone can be ponderous. Anyone can throw a philosophical anvil onto a piano and call it profundity. But to sound effortless while maintaining rhythmic precision, harmonic intelligence, and lyrical wit requires an almost alarming degree of control.

Hicks possesses this control in abundance.

His songs often appear to be wandering aimlessly, but this is merely a clever illusion. They are wandering with purpose. They take the scenic route through human folly, romantic confusion, social absurdity, and the general inconvenience of being alive. His characters do not so much experience existential crises as mildly misplace them.

And then there are the Hot Licks themselves.

The musicianship is superb, but never ostentatious. The instrumentalists seem to understand that virtuosity is most impressive when it doesn't stand in the doorway shouting, "LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!" Instead, the playing slips into the music with a kind of conversational ease. Strings pluck, voices intertwine, rhythms swing, and suddenly one realizes that the entire structure has been assembled with the precision of a Swiss watch disguised as a secondhand cuckoo clock.

This is where Tangled Tales achieves its greatest ontological density.

The album is, on the surface, relaxed. Beneath that surface, however, one detects an elaborate negotiation between sincerity and irony. Hicks is funny, but he is not merely a comedian. He is whimsical, but never weightless. His songs contain characters who seem ridiculous until, with almost imperceptible chromatic resonance, they begin to resemble ourselves.

This is the great trick.

We laugh at the tangled tales because they are tangled. Then we discover that our own tales are considerably more tangled, and that we have been laughing at the wrong person.

The album's relationship with time is also fascinating. It sounds simultaneously old-fashioned and impossible to date. One can hear echoes of Western swing, jazz clubs, folk gatherings, and smoky rooms where somebody's uncle knows a song that nobody else remembers. Yet the record refuses to become a museum piece. Its charm is too alive for that.

There is a looseness here, but not sloppiness. A casualness, but not indifference. The music gives the impression that it might fall apart at any moment, when in fact it is being held together by musicians who know precisely where every thread is located.

Hence the title.

Tangled Tales does not merely tell stories. It tangles them.

It tangles sincerity with satire, nostalgia with modernity, jazz with folk, sophistication with foolishness. It creates a peculiar musical space in which a man can sing about the absurdities of life while sounding as though he has just discovered them himself.

And perhaps that is Dan Hicks's greatest achievement.

He makes intelligence sound relaxed.

In an era when artists frequently feel compelled to demonstrate the seriousness of their intentions, Hicks seems content to let the songs wander about in their slippers. Yet beneath the slippers is an intricate architecture of rhythm, melody, harmony, and language. The result is music that rewards attention without demanding it.

This is an important distinction.

One can listen casually to Tangled Tales and simply enjoy the swing, the voices, the musicianship, and the dry humor. One can also listen more closely and discover an album of remarkable subtlety. The deeper one investigates, the more one encounters the curious Plimwellian paradox: the apparently simple becomes increasingly complex, while the apparently complex reveals itself to have been enjoying a joke all along.

I would therefore describe Tangled Tales as a work of controlled informality.

It is the musical equivalent of a person who arrives late to a formal dinner, apologizes charmingly, tells an amusing story, and then—without anyone quite noticing—proceeds to make the most intelligent observation of the evening.

There are albums that attempt to capture life.

Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks seem to have realized that life cannot be captured.

It can only be tangled.

And occasionally, if the musicians are good enough, the tangling produces something approaching beauty.

Google Discovers the Rumpeltized Effect

 While testing a brand-new Joe Walsh MS Paint portrait that had not yet been posted online, Google Image Search described the artwork as “rumpeltized” and attributed it to artist Ralph Rumpelton.

The interesting part is that the painting was completely new. It had no previous online history. Somehow, Google connected the visual style with the growing collection of Rumpeltonian artwork already scattered across the internet.

Maybe “Rumpeltized” is becoming more than just a word that is made up. Maybe it is becoming a description of a certain kind of creative chaos — where imperfect lines, unexpected colors, and MS Paint limitations become part of the artwork itself.

Of course, this was never planned. Like most things in life, it just happened.

And that might be the most Rumpeltonian thing of all.

Let us dispose of the obvious first.

It is, in short, competent.

Now...

(turns toward the Rumpelton version as though something unpleasant has appeared on the wall)

...we have this.

Miss Vermeer appears to have wandered into a carnival funhouse and emerged permanently altered. The eyes point in directions known only to migratory birds. The neck has apparently resigned from the composition altogether. The proportions suggest someone reconstructed a Renaissance masterpiece from memory after hearing it described over a poor telephone connection.

And yet...

I hesitate to admit this...

The silhouette is instantly recognizable.

The blue turban. The oversized pearl. The turn of the shoulders.

Somehow this impossible creature still announces itself as Girl With the Pearl Earring.

That irritates me more than if it had failed completely.

Because failure would have been easier to dismiss.

Instead Mr. Rumpelton has committed artistic vandalism while preserving just enough structure for the viewer to smile.

I hate that.

Professor Bartholomew Crankshaw III

Miss Pembly is, as always, wonderfully angry.

The left painting demonstrates admirable discipline. Whoever painted it understands restraint, atmosphere, and the difficult business of allowing light to do the work instead of shouting with color.

I have remarkably few complaints.

Which is disappointing.

Now...

Mr. Rumpelton.

Good heavens.

This is the visual equivalent of translating Shakespeare into refrigerator magnets.

Every proportion is argumentative.

The face appears assembled by committee.

The eyes have abandoned diplomatic relations with one another.

And yet...

The fellow possesses confidence.

One stroke says,

"Yes, I know that eye is too large. It shall remain too large."

There is no apology.

No timid correction.

No desperate attempt to imitate realism.

Only complete commitment to an absurd visual language.

As someone who believes artists should suffer for their convictions, I cannot entirely dislike that attitude.

Commitment is not a substitute for ability.

Certainly not.

But ability without personality often becomes wallpaper.

Some paintings arrive quietly. Others kick the archive door open, cough smoke into the catalog drawers, and insist on being filed under "Proceed with Caution." Ralph Rumpelton's interpretation of Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks – Tangled Tales belongs firmly in the latter category.

The first thing one notices is the impossible head, stretched into glorious Rumpeltonian proportion, as though every story Dan Hicks ever told had physically pushed his face forward. The burst of flame escaping his mouth is not merely fire—it is a visual footnote explaining that certain songs are simply too hot to remain inside the singer.  Herbie Mudpucket (1943?–Present? Probably)

Herbie Mudpucket is widely regarded by a very small number of people as one of the most overlooked bass players of the 1960s and 1970s. Though his name rarely appeared on album covers, and even more rarely in the correct spelling, Mudpucket reportedly played on hundreds of recordings—most of which sold somewhere between 17 and 43 copies.

Born in an unspecified town somewhere "off Route 9," Herbie developed his distinctive bass style after learning on a homemade instrument fashioned from a broomstick, a soup pot, and what he insisted was "genuine Tennessee fence wire." His playing was described by one producer as "almost in time," and by another as "surprisingly present."

Throughout the late '60s and early '70s, Mudpucket drifted from studio to studio, contributing tasteful bass lines to albums such as Songs for Discount Furniture, The Lavender Turnip Experience, Three Chords and a Tax Problem, and the critically ignored progressive-folk-jug-band masterpiece Mildew on the Moon. Nearly every record disappeared without a trace, earning Herbie the affectionate nickname, "The Invisible Sideman."

Fellow musicians remembered him as quiet, dependable, and perpetually carrying a thermos of coffee that may or may not have contained coffee. He was famous for tuning entirely by intuition, refusing to own more than three strings at any given time, and claiming that "the fourth one only encourages showing off."

When disco arrived, Herbie quietly wandered away from the recording scene. Rumors placed him variously as a fishing guide, a bowling alley mechanic, and the proprietor of a roadside bait-and-vinyl shop where he continued to insist that his best work was "still waiting to be discovered."

To this day, collectors scour dusty thrift stores hoping to find an album featuring Herbie Mudpucket. Thus far, they have mostly found easy-listening records and instructional polka LPs. Still, among those who appreciate musicians who were almost famous for records that were almost released, Herbie Mudpucket remains an enduring legend.

There are album covers that illustrate music, and there are album covers that attempt to contain it. This one does neither. Instead, it summons.

The crude red glyphs that masquerade as musicians are not portraits but hieratic markings — closer to prehistoric cave inscriptions than to modern commercial design. One suspects the artist understands, perhaps instinctively, that Sun Ra is not a bandleader but a cosmological event. The Arkestra here stands not on a stage but upon piano-keys rendered as architectural columns — an elegant metaphor suggesting harmony as foundation, ritual as structure.

The palette — a restricted red bleeding across an ochre void — evokes both Martian landscape and ancient parchment. The figures’ anonymity is intentional. They are less individuals than emissaries. We have convened. We have murmured. We have reached unanimity.

This work exists in the liminal space between memory and approximation, where the hand—untrained but earnest—attempts to reconstruct what the eye recalls of Herman Blount's cosmic proclamations. The artist has chosen the crudest of digital implements, MS Paint, as if to honor Sun Ra's own rejection of refinement in favor of raw transmission.

Rumpelish: The Unmistakable Spirit of Imperfect Creation

 Rumpelish is not simply a style; it is an attitude. It describes artwork that embraces personality over precision, imagination over technical perfection, and creative chaos over polished conformity.

A Rumpelish work does not attempt to hide its origins. The brush marks, odd proportions, unexpected colors, and digital imperfections become part of the artistic language. Instead of asking, “How accurately does this resemble reality?” a Rumpelish artist asks, “How much character can be squeezed out of the tools I have?”

Born from the pixelated landscapes of MS Paint and the philosophy of Rumpeltonian Cubism, Rumpelish celebrates the happy accidents that happen when an artist stops chasing perfection and starts chasing expression.

A technically flawless portrait may capture a face. A Rumpelish portrait captures a personality, a mood, and sometimes a little bit of chaos.

Critics may debate its place in art history, but one thing is certain: once something has been Rumpelized, it can never quite return to normal.

On "Future Days," or: The Algorithm Learns to Dream

There is a particular species of vindication available only to the outsider artist in the search-engine age: not critical acclaim, not gallery placement, but algorithmic cohabitation. Here, Rumpelton's crude and luminous rendering of Can's "Future Days" sits shoulder to shoulder with Wikipedia's sanctioned archive and Bandcamp's commercial gloss—three totems of the same sleeve, granted equal residency in the great index.

One must resist the urge to call this accident. The trembling gold lettering, the wobble in that mystical trident, the sincere failure of proportion—these are not errors but confessions, and Google's silicon eye, indifferent to pedigree, has filed the confession beside the canon. Rumpelton has always painted as though someone were watching over his shoulder, some phantom co-conspirator whispering corrections he chooses to ignore. Perhaps that companion is not imagined at all. Perhaps it is the machine itself, patiently waiting for him to arrive at Bora Bora.

He will not arrive. That is rather the point.

The left panel—his digital interpretation—does not merely mirror the right; it interrogates it. Let me begin by saying that The Count is the kind of record people pretend to enjoy so they can feel worldly, cultured, and vaguely superior while swirling a glass of something they claim is “peaty.” It’s Basie, yes — the man, the myth, the piano that sounds like it’s perpetually clearing its throat — but this particular compilation is less “swinging big-band majesty” and more “your uncle’s idea of classy background music for a dinner party where the roast is overcooked.”

The cover alone tells you everything you need to know. A grayscale portrait of Basie looking like he’s trying to remember whether he left the stove on, paired with RCA Victor’s proud proclamation of “ENHANCED SOUND,” which in 1956 meant they turned one knob slightly to the right and called it a technological revolution. Collectors Issue, they say — which is true, in the sense that collectors will buy anything if you slap the word “issue” on it.

Musically, the album is a parade of Basie standards performed with the kind of professionalism that borders on passive aggression. The band hits every note with such precision you can practically hear them thinking, “Fine, here’s your perfect horn section, now please let us go home.” Basie’s piano is its usual minimalist marvel — a man who could say more with three notes than most pianists say with thirty — but on The Count, he seems determined to say as little as humanly possible.
