âMaybe.â Ade gives space for the bright hope that Zara could inflict but deep down, in the shadowy parts of her, she knows Hektor wonât leave without a fight. âI doubt the original vampire is going to loosen his hold on my mother so easily, heâs able to control the coven that way.â Her and her siblings wonât bend so easily but with so much on the line, it was hard to tell who might surrender. âHe isnât. Him and his cult of vampires kidnapped a good portion of the town last year, my baby sister Ava was taken. Itâs hard to get her to speak about it but it sounds like it was horrible. They turned Maven Lockwood from a witch into a vampire on the alter of Persephone that night.â
âWell, your mother is strong. Iâm sure she knows what sheâs doing and will know if she has to really worry about him.â She didnât even sound sure of that with her own words. They were shakey as they left her mouth. Zara hoped the Vidalis coven would be okay. No matter what was thrown their way. As Ade mentioned everything that happened, all Zara could do was let out a breath she hadnât even realized she was holding. âWell, none of that sounds pleasant at all. I hope this Maven person is okay.â

.
Mateo waved her off, uncomfortable by the attention when it came from a place that was concerned about his wellbeing instead of simply just being attention for the sake of attention. He was fine, that much he was sure ofâ while things fell apart and in some ways he was quite frightened, there were others in which he was progressing with leaps and bounds. He had a business now, he was going back to schoolâ but Zara was looking at him with her wide, doe eyes and he leaned into her shoulder. âIâm alright, I promise.â Her reaction made him grin, shaking his head. âWeâre not like, official or anything, butââ Mateo felt giddy. âI think, or well, I hope weâre getting there.â
âOkay. If you say so. Iâll believe you.â Until she saw that look in his eyes that made her think otherwise. It was clear that he wasnât going to tell her even if he wasnât okay. His wellbeing mattered to her though. Mateo was her friend and, to be honest, they had been through a lot together by this point. Even if it was just one thing. But that one thing had been very traumatizing for both parties involved. Zara just wished she could get rid of that moment for both of them. âWell, Iâm happy for you regardless. You deserve it. So whatâs their name? Do I know them? When can we meet? Can I make them a little alien blanket?â

âI feel like Iâm always putting my foot in my mouth when we try to have a normal conversation. Not that Iâm stumbling, itâs justâŠ.Sheâs good at talking.â In a way she cannot describe without embarrassing herself completely and that has her shrugging her shoulders, face going hot again at just the idea. âZ, I thinkâŠI think something happened to her.â Winterâs brow furrows and the worry is enough to take her back down to Earth and away from blushing again. She thinks back to the beach, the two of them in the water bathed in moonlight and Kasey looking like she was being held together with a sliver of tape. âShe couldnât use her magic the last time I saw her. Like when the veil fell. Have you heard of anything like that?â
âYeah, Iâm pretty sure sheâs talking poems and weâre just blabbing about stupid stuff. I mean, I went to Area 51. She probably wrote a novel on it.â Zara was sure she talked too much sometimes, but she was never saying anything worthwhile. She just hoped she was getting through the day half the time. Her eyes moved back to her sister as the next words left the other witchâs mouth. âIt seemed like that was the case last I spoke to her, too.â She hoped there was nothing wrong with the other woman her sister clearly cared for. âI donât know half the things that are going on in this town, Winter. Iâm just trying to survive like everyone else. I hope sheâs okay though.â

âI totally get that! Like, thereâs no fun in being a bad person, it just sounds like a lot of work.â Especially if you were forcing yourself to be bad just for the sake of acting tough. Ava and Zara were two individuals who werenât about that type of lifestyle. âOh, yeah, of course! Iâm the same way, like, I cry. A lot and about everything.â She probably wouldâve cried about the MTEO sticker if Zara hadnât suggested going to the Vidalis estate.Â
âRight? Like, why even bother being bad? It seems like you would waste so much energy on that. It takes zero energy to be nice.â Luckily, Zara found a common interest with Ava. The two of them were, in her opinion, pleasant to be around. They werenât completely judgmental and she thought they wanted the best for others. Why wouldnât people want to hang out with them? âSee. You understand me. Crying sometimes just makes you feel better.â Thankfully, she didnât have to worry about feeling weird about it around Ava.
winterdupont·:
âYeah thatâs kind of her natural state of being.â Covered in stars, as if her body itself was celestial. Given Corinthâs penchant for strange supernatural happenings, such a thing didnât feel so ridiculous. Winterâs smiling at the thought and she catches herself, cheeks tinted the faintest pink. Her hair falls forward as she looks down at the piece in her hand to try and avoid further embarrassment. âCouldnât hurt, right?â Ask Kasey out on a date, a real date. Her, on a date, with a cute girl who talked like she was weaving the grandest story. Such an idea seemed ridiculous and yet, itâs better than sitting around daydreaming. âWorst she can say is no.â
âSounds about right. I talk to her and feel like Iâm dumber than usual.â Not that she thought she wasnât smart. Zara just didnât consider herself the most intellectual person in the room most of the time. It just wasnât something she cared about most of the time. If anything, she was more creative than she was the former. With the clay still on her fingers, she lifted her hand to poke her sisterâs rosy cheek. âExactly. She would sorely be missing out if she said no. Which she wonât.â Winter was one of a kind and she thought anyone would be lucky to have the other witch have even the smallest crush on them.
sebastienxmercier·:
She could feel it, their magic all flowing together. But also the feeling of something else. Like they were pushing against something that wouldnât budge. It was darker, felt foreign and unfamiliar and Winterâs eyes closed as she tried to push through it. Her mouth keeps moving, her brow furrows, thereâs some faltering and for a moment she thinks that theyâve lost, that they arenât enough.
And then everything seems to just stop.
Her eyes peek open at her palm and the scale is still there itâs justâŠ.A scale. Thereâs no energy, there is only them and their magic reunited after so many years apart and she almost jumps for absolute joy. The fatigue, the ache behind her eyes, everything feelsâŠWell it feels like itâs increased tenfold when she really thinks about it, all that lack of sleep was crashing into her. But she feels lighter almost despite dropping both of her siblings hands and falling to her knees in the sand. Despite that, sheâs smiling softly, actually letting out a laugh. âWe did it. Guys, we fucking did it.â @sebastienxmercier·

The room is charged with a current like static, the air, the ground, their bodies. The three of them had never gotten along well enough to do something like this, whatever spells theyâd practiced or used had hardly ever been cooperative. For a moment Bastien thinks of her, he hopes that sheâs proud and he imagines that sheâs in the room with them now lending her Mercier power to theirs. Then it was over. The spell broke down the curse and thereâs a sensation like a bundle of sticks being snapped in two.Â
Winter fell, but Bastienâs shoulder is under hers soon after, helping her to her feet. The witch can feel the dark magic has been dispelled, her curse has been lifted and if there was a reason for him to come to this cursed city it had to be this. Bastien found himself looking to Zara now, âWe did-â doing something together, helping their sister, it meant more to him than he was able to articulate now. He looked to Winter now, he felt the fatigue of spent magic, but likely nothing compared to what his sister was feeling now. âbut we should get you home. You look exhausted.â @zaramercier·
As soon as her sister falls to her knees, Zara is right there with her. A small smile reached her lips at the smile on Winterâs face. Whatever problems she had with her brother could wait for now. That was the last thing they had to worry about right now. All she cared about was making sure that her sister was okay. âYeah, we did.â She looked up at Sebastien for just a moment as he spoke and then focused back on her sister. âLetâs go, Winter. You need some rest.â
