funny story
i was really awkward when i was little, so i got picked on a lot. by my older brothers, by bullies at school, by the kids next door. i didn’t mind too much, cause i was little, but after a while my parents got tired of it, so they put me in martial arts classes so i could start leaning self defense. after I was in there for a year or so, i started to get some confidence, and start sticking up for myself, and it worked. everyone stopped picking on me (except my brothers, but you can’t win ‘em all), anyway, i loved it. i kept taking different self defense classes all the way through middle school and high school and honestly, I was getting pretty good.
then, my freshmen year of college i started dating this guy who was twice my size (i’m pretty small though) and when i told him i had taken those classes, he started pressuring me to show him what I knew. i refused, and he let it go pretty easily. but about a week later, he rushed at me out of nowhere, and in a moment of sheer panic i did a kind of leg sweep thingy, and slammed his face into my knee. he fell on the floor, gushing blood, and laughing like crazy. once the shock of what had happened wore off, i started laughing too. had I really just broken my boyfriends face?!? i helped him off the floor, and helped him clean up, as he explained what i already knew, he hadn’t believed me, but i changed that. we’re married now, and he likes to tell the story of how he fell in love when I gave his first broken nose
if you give kids zero restrictions they’ll become the nicest fucking kids ever who never do drugs or get into trouble i know because my parents let me do nothing but eat chicken nuggets all day and read hentai until 4am and i am a straight A student
Seriously though this seems to be the case with a ton of people I know, if you don’t restrict them all the time they actually do better and are mentally healthier
WHY DON’T PARENTS UNDERSTAND THIS?!?

HEY. PEOPLE WHO ARE BINDING YOUR CHESTS, LISTEN UP FOR LIKE FIFTEEN SECONDS.
THIS IS WHAT CAN POTENTIALLY HAPPEN IF YOU IMPROPERLY BIND WHEN YOU ARE YOUNG, OR PROBABLY IF YOU DO IT LONGTERM EVER.
DO NOT DO THIS.
when i was a wee transchild of fourteen, recently out and generally clueless, i didn’t know that there were real binders to use. so, like many young trans dudes, i used a 6" ace bandage - and it worked, for what i wanted. it was hot and uncomfortable and squeezy, but my chest was flat, so i didn’t care.
then, a year or so later, i found out about real binders, but they were expensive. at 14, with no income, despite my parents support… i couldn’t justify asking for a 30 dollar binder, so i didn’t. it wasn’t til a trip to a waterpark that i finally got my first real binder and stopped using the ace bandage.
that was ten years ago.
my ribs are permanently deformed and you can see the exact curve of the bottom line of my makeshift binder, to this day. me and Weird Rib, destined to be together forever.
please please please PLEASE do not bind with ace bandages. use sports tape on both sides and not wrapped around your chest. use sports bras. layer. buy a real binder - underworks is where i get mine and i hope other people who bind can reblog and add links and resources because i currently can’t! i know firsthand the desperation that comes with gender dysphoria and i understand the need to bind. i really, truly do - it is a core part of my presentation and i do not leave the house without binding, and i’m sure it’s similar for many of you.
but please, do it SAFELY. you will regret it if you don’t.
