âSay yes. Come out with me and have a few drinks.âÂ
âI guess Iâll go. Why the hell not?â
âThatâs certainly a surprise, considering⌠everything.â She was taken aback by his confession. If the roles were reversed, sheâd be glad that he was dead. It was just another way that he was better than her and deserved so much more than she could give.
âI donât know. There are few people in the world who have powers or wear masks, so I guess you canât be picky about who you let in. Heâs not here, but his kids are. Wait, what did you hear?â Stephanie noticed his smirk and shook her head in annoyance.Â
âI donât think it is. I never wanted you dead after what happened and thatâs never changed.â He couldnât quite grasp why sheâd thought he would be glad about her death. He was the one who really liked her, even if she could never like him as much.Â
âI guess so, but it still seems like a disaster waiting to happen. He has kids? Who the hell would want to have kids with him? I just heard about the kidnapping.âÂ
âO-oh, um, you donât have to forget it if you donât want to. I, ah, just thought that since you werenât sure what to say in response to me rambling about mug cakes, that you found it weird.â
âI mean, it sounds delicious but wouldnât you burn your hand if you baked a cake inside a mug? Knowing me, Iâd grab the handle right out of the oven without thinking about it. I didnât really know what to say because I donât understand why youâd want such a small cake. I didnât find it weird though. Cake is never weird.âÂ
âWhat? Iâm awake. See? Iâm up. What is it? Whatâs going on?â
âNothing at all. I was just bored and your door was wide open, so I walked inside to find you sleeping.â
âThereâs a good chance you donât know me, or maybe you do and I donât remember because I just donât care, but if a cop car happens to drive past, can you maybe possibly pretend to know me?â
âWeâve never met as far as I know, but I can pretend to know you right now if you want me to. Thereâs a problem though. I have no idea what your name is, gorgeous.âÂ
âIâm sorryâŚAh, forget I ever said anythingâŚâ
âItâs hard for me to forget what pretty girls say to me, but Iâll try if youâd really like me to.â
âIâm sorry to disappoint you, Z. I seem to have a habit of doing that.â She hissed back, the nickname accidentally slipping out. She watched him stop in front of her with a wary gaze.
âThere is actually a fair number of villains here, theyâre not very selective of who they let in.â Seeing that he had mirrored her pose, she uncrossed her arms.Â
âCanât say you actually disappointed me by not being dead.â He mumbled to her. It was true that she had disappointed him before, but Zadkiel should have known she would. Tim meant everything to her and he was too blind to see that before he had asked her out.Â
âWho was stupid enough to invite villains to a school like this? Well, who have they let in? Iâm assuming they havenât let the Joker in with everything Iâve heard recently.â Z couldnât help but smirk as he watched Stephanieâs reaction to the mirrored mannerism.Â
âProbably for the best.â It was good that Z couldnât see behind his mask, because then he might not look up to him as much as he did. Chuckling softly, he nodded. âSounds perfect to me. Why donât we start with a good prank, and then settle in for a movie and some pizza or something.â
âYeah, probably a whole bunch of spells I donât want to know about. Like summoning demons or maybe you just think about naked girls all the time.â He teased his older brother. âGreat! We have a plan then. Who should our victim be? You know these people better than I do. The movie has to have really tacky magic so we can make fun of it the whole time, okay?â
Malaika moved to the side, giving him room to sit. At least there was someone here that she wasnât worried about running into all of the time. They didnât know each other well and that was a good thing. âLearning how to use my wings better. Fight better.â She shrugged lightly, running her fingers along her fathers to smooth them out. âYou seem very excited to be here.â
Zadkiel sat down beside Mala as she moved to make room for him. She wasnât exactly a person he expected to see in a place like this, but then again he hadnât expected to ever see her again. âIâm not gonna lie, I donât remember your name. I donât usually run into my one-night stands again after we have sex. Iâm Zadkiel though.â What are you supposed to when introducing yourself to a one-night stand again? Shake hands? Fist pump? He decided not to do anything. âWell, my brother came here a year ago and things just werenât the same without him around. Iâm more excited about seeing him than being at the school.âÂ
âHey, you stay out of my head.â Quin knew he was joking. They had long since promised to never use their powers on one another unless absolutely necessary, so it didnât worry him. âSure, we can do that. What are you in the mood for? Food? Movie? Magical pranks?â
âIâm too scared to see whatâs in your head.â Zadkiel chuckled, half seriously. He never quite knew what his older brother was thinking and he wasnât sure he wanted to know. âHow about food, a movie and magical pranks?âÂ
âWould you like some help with that?â
âNo, I think I can get it.â He said, pulling harder at the string. âOh..yep...got it.â Zadkiel laughed as confetti popped out of the tiny container and all over the floor.
âGood!â Mala gave him a teasing smile before spinning around and leading him to her new dorm. Once inside, she hopped up on her bed and leaned back, wings spread out under her. âNow, what are you doing at a school like this, my little one nighter.â
Zadkiel followed Mala silently to her dorm and raised a brow as she spread her wings out. That was something he hadnât noticed when they met. âApparently learning how to control my magic better or some shit like that. What about you, angel?â
âOf course I remember.â Quin shook his head. âThat doesnât mean I know how in control of it you are.â Reaching out, he ruffled his brotherâs hair. âA year apart means we got a lot of hanging out to do if weâre ever going to catch up.â
âGood, I wouldnât want to have to show you.â Zakiel joked. âIâm pretty in control of it...I mean, I havenât killed anyone as far as I know.â He swatted his older brotherâs hand away. âIt does. Why donât we start right now?â
âI just asked what were you doing, maybe start there?â
âIâve been trying to open this confetti thingy that I found, but itâs not working.â
Stephanie stared at the familiar face for a few moments with her mouth agape. âZadkiel?â She asked, incredulous. She took a step back as he moved nearer to her and crossed her arms. âItâs certainly been a while.â
Under normal circumstances she would try and be nice to him, however her lack of sleep and energy made her irritable. She rolled her eyes at his words and sighed. âYeah, well, they tend to leave that part out in the brochure.â Stephanie snapped.Â
âBelieve it or not, but Iâm sure you believe it since Iâm not the one whoâs supposed to be dead.â He replied, venom sticking to the each word. He stopped a few feet in front of her. âSure has.âÂ
âOh, I wasnât aware they advertised a school for heroes. Doesnât seem like something youâd want villains to particularly know about.â He responded, crossing his arms over his chest as she had done.Â
âUhm⌠Say yes? And follow me to my dorm.â Mala stated like it was obvious.
âYes,â he chuckled. âIâll be right behind you.â
âExcuse me, but did you not see that babe that just walked by?â He whistled, turning his attention to his obviously annoyed younger brother. âAh, donât piss anyone off because most of âem have powers that could rip you to shreds in seconds.â
âI saw her, but I was more worried about figuring how not to get killed here.â He rolled his eyes as Quin whistled. âYou do remember that I have mind control, right? Or has a year apart caused you to forget everything about me?â
