And even though a lot of shit has happened in his life, AND in the lives of all those close to him, this is still the Big Thing that he gets angry about.💚- A memory that makes them feel guiltyHmm… I feel like Obie has a case of low-key and constant guilt about a LOT of things, so it’s tough to pick out one stand-alone. But I’d say that leaving Nyxzel to go into Imperial Fleet training was his first experience of real, deep guilt. He regrets that he didn’t better communicate his reasons and wishes to Nyxzel, and losing his horn to Nyxzel’s rage and sense of betrayal didn’t ease his feelings of guilt, or dissuade him from feeling badly for the seadweller. Obie ALSO feels guilty when he recalls that, before she became his friend and Caeli’s matesprit, he considered Estacia to be ‘just another lowblood.’ He never hated her, and he was definitely involved in the rescue mission to bring her back from the caves when she was in her hour of need, but he wasn’t yet emotionally invested in her thanks to her status as a comparatively short-lived ‘lowblood’ whose position on the caste put her in ‘usually just what ends up on my dinner plate’ range. Her genuine affection for both Caeli AND him, her kindness in helping to rescue HIM when he was in need, and her playful friendliness really won him over while he was healing at Caeli’s hive. SO, tl;dr he feels guilty for not thinking much more of Estacia until late in the game.💜- A memory about one of their loved ones, happy or sadEven though he killed her himself and he doesn’t really have REGRETS about it, Oberos often thinks about his Hawk Mom while he makes his nests and beds down in her feathers. He remembers returning to his cave after his first brief outing after he had freed himself by killing her, and beginning the process of gathering up and stowing away her feathers, cleaning her corpse so that it could be disposed of and yet holding on to so much of her as a keepsake.💔- A memory that leaves them feeling lonelyANY memory of the sweeps he spent as a pupa, sitting in the nested portion of his cave and peering out into the world that was just beyond his reach, past where his lusus would let him go. Just watching the sea, waves slowly and steadily rolling in and out as he waited for his lusus to return from hunting every long night. He wasn’t even aware of it at the time, but as a more mature troll who has now experienced friendship and the vibrancy of having a LIFE, he recognizes how absolutely lonely he was back then.💕- A memory about their significant otherTHIS IS A TOUGH ONE, since Oberos’ current status is a little bizarre. :U I guess I could say that a unique memory would be of the first time he recognized that Sirrah sincerely and persistently LIKED him in a romantic and not just sexual sense, when after some time spent as friends and frequent dining partners, Sirrah floated the suggestion that he would still love to date him even if he also very much enjoyed just being his friend. It was another case of ‘I didn’t really pay much attention to you, and then I suddenly realized that you’ve been great this whole time,’ sort of like what happened with Estacia.💞- A memory about their children[shrugs heavily because Oberos didn’t even have pseudo-children at any point :U]💓- A memory about their friendsWhen Obie was laying around his hive, after getting thrashed and blinded and kicked out of the military for attacking Jadrek. He figured that a slow and steady starvation, with background music provided by the steadily rolling waves outside of his hive, was an inevitability. It gave him an opportunity to reflect on his loneliness as a pupa; the fact that he had ended up right back where he started, and now without a lusus to care for his broken remains. SO, when Estacia literally swooped in on Bird Mom and rescued him, and when they brought him to Caeli’s hive where all THREE of them proceeded to take care of him - that really had a strong impact on him. It was A Bad Time in his life, but being rescued when he faced certain death [ESPECIALLY by Estacia], being cared for and nurtured by Bird Mom [despite the fact that he started out afraid of her, just like he had been of his own lusus], and being supported by Caeli [despite having, in his eyes, caused a huge mess while trying and ultimately failing to seek vengeance for wrongs committed against her]? Those are all things that he looks back on frequently, and with warmth and humility.💗- A memory about a good deed they didSaving Estacia is a memory that’s clouded over with negative feelings because MAAN, he should have loved and appreciated her more back then. And the same can be said of attacking Jadrek, because that derailed hugely and ended up causing a lot of heartache and distress for his loved ones. BUT, being there when Caeli had the emotion-sucking incident with her machine? He definitely feels like he did something genuinely good and helpful, even though he believes himself to have performed only a supporting role there.💖- A memory that made them feel specialObie’s a Void baby. He never thinks of himself as the center of anybody’s attention. :U But he’s also a Mage of Void, so he’s at peace with that and not at all bothered that he’s never had a ‘star of the show’ moment.

❤️- A happy memory that makes them smile:

There’s so many things that could really fit into this but in order to not cut into any of the other ones let’s go with the time she got a job as a miner for a high blood.

Now you’d think that’s a really weird memory considering incredibly hard labour and also that there was a cave in and she broke her arm at one point, BUT she did it so she could get money so she could buy her friends presents for twelfth perigee. I think that’s also how she met Lixie? So two fantastic things in one tbh. Plus all the work got her even more fit so BONUS.

💙- A sad memory that makes them cry

SO MANY POTENTIAL OVERLAPS BUT OKAY, for purely sad there’s probably the time Obbie got super hurt and almost died when he was going to try fuck up Jadrek for fucking with Caeli and got ultra fired and almost executed. That was WAY SAD. But hey they’re rad eyeless buddies now.

💛- A memory that makes them feel angry

This one would probably be the situation with their ex-matesprit? She feels angry at herself because she got into a relationship with someone she didn’t really have feelings with because she was so lonely, but ultimately now that it’s way down the line she just feels incredibly pissed off at THEM. Kind of like when you can retroactively look back on an abusive relationship and realise just how fucked up it was.

Like, they tried to force her to have sex when she wasn’t ready and she broke up with them over that, and then when Essy went back to try and help her when she was having a shit time DESPITE WHAT HAPPENED that asshole kidnapped her and tortured her and almost killed her by leaving her to starve in a cave. How much of an asshole do you even have to BE, holy shit.

I reckon Essy tried to justify a lot of it to make it not seem as bad because she’s just that kind of person who wants to see good in everyone, but it’s so far down the line I imagine they’ve gotten over the idea of trying to make it seem any less bad than it really was. So now there’s just a whole lotta anger for that douchebag.

💚- A memory that makes them feel guilty

This one would probably be what happened with her lusus. Like, ultimately it isn’t vaguely her fault considering Feral Alex was a massive cockmongler and killed her lusus as revenge for her…what, stopping him from killing someone for no reason? But I imagine she’ll never really get over the feeling of guilt that she somehow caused her lusus to be killed, and that she was too injured at the time to save her.

💜- A memory about one of their loved ones, happy or sad

To be honest Essy will never really forget how much she loved her lusus. Like, they weren’t the nicest lusus ever but it was pretty obvious that they cared about her pretty much the entire time? She was just really bad at showing how much she cared, and just kind of projected it through how she was trying to force Essy to be a better hunter because as an animal that was pretty much the only thing she knew properly, like

“If I can make them be a better hunter they’ll be happier and have a nicer life so this is how I need to show my love.”

Even if that meant her being pushed way harder than she should have been a lot of the time. Because it’s probably really hard to gauge how much a tiny troll can deal with when you’re a building sized panther.

💔- A memory that leaves them feeling lonely

Honestly the only time Essy has felt genuinely lonely was the time leading up to when she got with her now ex-matesprit. Girl’s always had friends and had her lusus, but with her lusus gone and Caeli happy with Eth and a bunch of other factors she just felt really garbage about herself and made some poor decisions. But now she lives with Caeli so she’ll probably never feel lonely again, so it’s more just remembering how she used to feel than feeling right now.

Well I mean this just HAS to be when Caeli asked her out, like

That’s still something that resonates with me on how cute it was SEVERAL YEARS down the line like holy fuck. How Essy was going through this slow as hell recovery after everything that happened with her former sprit just clawing her way out of that trauma pit and getting healthy again, now living with Caeli on a friendly basis so she didn’t have to feel shitty or alone anymore, her comforting Caeli about Eth being gone all the time and all the shit she was going through because of that (HERES LOOKING AT YOU JADREK YOU FUCK)

And then just Caeli realising that Eth had ditched her completely and was never there for her, and with Namor’s help realising SOMEONE HAD BEEN THERE FOR HER THE WHOLE TIME.

And then she sang a cute as hell song and Essy cried.

Happy cry.

💞- A memory about their children

Essy has no kids because trolls so here’s an intermission of an even older character than Essy being cute as hell with her kid, who she gave birth to when I was actively RPing her.

💓- A memory about their friends

Fun fact ESSY USED TO HAVE A MOIRAIL. She was a red blood who’s name I’ve forgotten that lived nearby her. She was a really aggressive person like a scrappy alleycat and Essy was there to hold her back. Essy had a crush on her moirail’s kismesis, but then their black relationship escalated and they killed each other before Essy could intervene.

Essy still wears her moirail’s colour in memory, which is why her skirt is red.

💗- A memory about a good deed they did

Probably saving Caeli from Feral alex. It kind of helped set off the whole chain of events with her and Caeli, and it DEFINITELY helped them get closer. But that aside it just felt good to help someone in need, even if her ribs and arm got smashed for her efforts.

💖- A memory that made them feel special

This one would probably be Morgan traipsing through the jungle for ages to find her after her eyes got damaged when she was attacked by that one random asshole no one liked. Considering she was just flopping around the jungle blind she’d probably be dead if not for that, and Morgan going out of her way to come help her definitely makes her feel special. 

OR THE CAVE RESCUE. So many people coming to help her, Caeli included. Plus finding out after the fact how many people were like, GEARED UP FOR WAR just hearing that she’d been hurt by someone.

i did the hemospectrum lifespan math. turns out, the hemospectrum is ridiculous.

as you can see from my maths sheet (with some explanations hastily added here and there,) the references I used were from canonical sources (hussie and the comic itself) stating that:

the burgundy bloods live about 30-50 human years

lifespans begin to go over a century with the greens

ceruleans can outlive “dozens” of midbloods

the fushia bloods can live a Long Fucking Time, which i quantified for math purposes

my “evidence only” chart uses only those first three canonical facts, with some guesstimates for fuchsia.

i plotted those on a chart, realized it was ridiculously exponential, then plotted the ln of the values on a chart, which you see. i then tried out some fits on the max values, and found a second degree polynomial was almost perfect.

this made a formula for maximum really simple - just use the fit formula and raise e to it.

i needed to come up with something a little arbitrary for min though, since i only had two points. so i decided that i wanted the difference in the ln of maximum and minimum age to increase either linearly or polynomially - meaning that the difference between actual maximum and minimum age would increase at a very fast exponential rate. this makes sense, because there are lots of things that can kill trolls early in their lives, but being higher on the hemospectrum does give them quite a bit of toughness. so their minimum age should increase significantly, but not nearly as fast as the maximum age.

i ended up using a cubic increase - i got that magic d#3 number by simply dividing the difference in the fuchsia and burgundy age gaps by the cube of 12, then multiplying that magic number by the cube of the index (with maximum of 12) in the actual difference formula. add that to the base difference and subtract it from the ln of the maximum age and raise e to the whole thing, and bam, minimum age. math!

as you can see, the math gave me the desired realistic result.

it turns out that in order to display the hemospectrum differences, you need four separate overlapping column charts. if you try to plot all 12, you can see violet and fuchsia and nothing else. (the obvious solution would be to display it as an ln, but then you couldn’t appreciate the magnitude of the increase! it just ends up looking nice and smooth:)

the middle chart is how many lives of lowbloods each highblood can expect to live. i.e. a fuchsia blood can expect to live the lives of 307 thousand burgundy bloods, and 11 violet bloods. if you follow the diagonals, you can see the exponential increase by the fact that the diagonals are increasing! (e.g. olive lives about 2 lime lives, while violet lives about 8 purple lives.)

some perspectives on this:

the blood caste with the lifespan closest to that of a modern human are the lime/candy red bloods. note that, in mutant form, they have the same blood color as humans.

highbloods would be extremely lonely; they would outlive most people they knew by far. to a fuchsia blood, adjusted to a human lifespan of about 80 years, a violet blood’s life would only last about 7 years. and a burgundy blood’s life would only last about 2 hours.

teal bloods are the first caste who truly begin to experience the phenomenon of lowbloods’ lives being shortened into obscurity. even a jade blood should be able to form a meaningful relationship with a burgundy, whose adjusted lifespan would be about 8 years to them. but to a teal, a burgundy’s adjusted lifespan would be under 3 years, and even a lime’s just a little over 5 years. this is notable because teal bloods are generally considered the first tier of midblood bureaucrats.

under non-sgrub conditions, to vriska, terezi’s life would last about 20 years. and to mindfang, the summoner’s life would last about 265 days.

to kanaya, rose’s life would last about 16 years.

karkat and dave would age together perfectly, with karkat starting out one year younger.

to the disciple, the sufferer’s life would last about 20 years. to the dolorosa, his life would last about 8 years. to the e%ecutor, his life would last about 102 days.

to equius, nepeta’s life would last about 205 days; on equius’s timescale, their moirallegiance would end swiftly with nepeta’s death of old age.

at the beginning of sgrub, aradia was 30% of the way through her average life expectancy (about 24 human years adjusted), nepeta was 7% of the way through hers (about 6 human years), equius was 0.04% of the way through his (about 11 human days), and feferi was .0001% of the way through hers (about 42 human minutes.) sgrub was literally fetching highblood infants.
