Some of my things that I got at Anime North this weekend! :D

Some more MTG playmats since my old Avacyn one is getting a bit beat up! Jolyne, The World and two really nice Rei Ayanami figures! I couldn’t remember which issues I had of Part 3 of Jojo so I just started at the end and moved back (I got 1 because I knew I didnt have it) Finally I cracked and bought 2 packs of the new Modern Masters but man was I fucking pumped when I pulled Iona! The Mako pin was the only thing I could find at the entire con that was Mako related :( They really need to make more merch of her thats for sale in North America! D:

Hey anon! I can’t remember it too well myself. I’m pretty sure (others, feel free to correct me if you remember) that the form itself comes online at 9:00pm. It may be different this year from last year, so I can’t give you much detail about it. I would have a few things already written out, like what your medium is, some signed samples already uploaded, etc. Make sure it is your best work (if you apply to premium) because of this rule here:

1.1 Artists' skill level might be evaluated to determine the allocation of premium artists tables in case of high demand.

So yeah! You should reach out to staff if you have any other questions, as I’m only someone who applied for Premium tables once.

FIRST TIME ANIME NORTH ARTISTS

If this is your first time in the alley or doing any sort of art sales or business at all

And you are still 0% prepared

No art no stand no nothing

consider dropping your table.

Why? Because if you cannot walk through a big convention and be fully confident that you can compete with what others are bringing to their tables, quality, quantity, and selection-wise, you’ll probably ruin your weekend. You won’t make back your table. You’ll just be sad that no one is stopping by your table and that you’re not enjoying the rest of what the convention has to offer.

Yes, this is a wake up slap. Someone had to do it. Unfortunately AN’s lotto system brings this predicament upon itself, but I have seen this happen so many times before, and it breaks my heart. I want the alley to be a positive experience for everyone, not full of unprepared folks and sad faces. I am only putting this out there because I don’t want to see more people so upset and stressed and HURT. For maybe, MAYBE, a $5 profit? Guys, it’s not worth the heartache.

I agree with the sentiment that everyone has to start somewhere, truly I do. But beginning your artistic entrepreneurial efforts should be positive and empowering, and for the most part, I don’t think that AN is the place for that anymore.

i do agree that if now, 46 days before the convention, you have absolutely nothing prepared (and you aren’t planning on taking commissions), you should maybe consider dropping and opening up a spot for someone else who does have a lot and was really excited to do anime north. i do. but that is only from the perspective of someone who loves this con so much, and who loves selling there so much. i draw all through the year thinking of anime north, and to have someone not even have one thing drawn and have a whole table... it’s kinda scary. and i’ve seen people go, and not make any profit at all (even ending up in debt) and they could have had a better weekend if they didn’t do it. it’s why i always always recommend small cons to start at. not the big stuff. the big stuff can crush you if you’re not prepared. it’s crushed friends of mine. it hasn’t crushed me, i sold at small cons for three years before i thought i could do anime north to build up my inventory. but yeah. just my opinion. if you have confidence that you can make things to sell within two months, go do it! it’s a lot of fun. it’s just a lot of work too. sleepless nights, especially if you have a job or school at the same time. be prepared for that.

this is also why i’m doing an artist alley 101 panel, one of the main things that will be focused on during it is “START A YEAR IN ADVANCE!” because no one wants to be stressed like crazy 2 months before the con to make a full inventory.

but if you were lucky enough to get in, good luck selling! remember i am always available for advice on what i think is popular, what works in the alley, what doesn’t, etc. i just don’t want to see anyone hurt.
