stepping over here to drop off another headcanon. i think trolls latch onto specific things with a degree of focus that borders or exceeds autistic hyperfixation as a method to preserve their own minds. trolls can live for centuries, maybe millennia, so having something they never get bored with helps stave off ennui.
Dropping another concept onto this blog for the people that still see it
Alternian Christmas/12th Perigees Eve modernizing itself over time, resulting in the unfortunate creation of the Mother of Claws, a gigantic biomechanical mother grub that manufactures weapons instead of grubs. Every sweep, she sends out a squadron of unkillable nightmare wraiths--her Saints of Claws--to distribute her created weapons to random trolls all over Alternia to make sure they remain armed and ready to kill each other.
It's considered bad luck not to cause at least a little harm with a gift from the Claws. It's widely believed that not doing so will cause one of the saints return next sweep to take back the gift and kidnap the "coward" to be processed into the next batch of weapons.
I'm still not "back" but I had a very fun dream last night in the vein of my old Alternian Horrors series and felt like I should share it in case anyone who still follows this blog wanted to use it.
The gist of it is a more aggressive species of vulture bees that colonizes the bodies of Alternian undead, making hives in the decaying flesh and eventually replacing it entirely with their hive material. They exist symbiotically with the undead, guiding them towards prey and using their venomous stings to help incapacitate victims enough for the undead to Get Them, then the undead and the bees feast on the resulting corpse.
As the undead rots away, more and more of their body is replaced by a sturdy shell of hive material anchored directly to bone. The replacements are crude, at first, but especially aged hives may create what are essentially troll mannequins around the skeleton, looking almost like living trolls at a first glance and a living statue at second glance, but anyone that damages them is swiftly attacked by the swarm and the ravenous dead underneath it all. Undead that become too damaged to secure prey or end up re-killed are simply abandoned by the swarm, leaving the hive to decay with the rest of the corpse.
Because of their tendency to give undead a "whole" body over time, it gives the illusion that they're trying to restore a zombie to proper flesh in order to mimic trolls. This isn't quite true, but it does mean they've ended up the star of many horror movies where exactly that happens... and it means whatever their subspecies, they're all commonly called "Wannabees."
The Censor branch of the Empire is tasked with the suppression or eradication of any ideas or information deemed too dangerous for the general public to be trusted with. When told that they ‘cannot kill an idea,’ they took it as a challenge. The result is the abomination known as Unit 404, of the Armorgeddon line.
The number of people aware of 404s existence tends to fluctuate due to the Units own nature, censoring itself from the minds of both the population and its own superiors. Once a powerful psion on its own, the Armorgeddon procedure allowed 404s power to increase to a level that not even the engineers are fully aware of… But, more importantly, kept 404 completely controlled and 100% loyal to the Empire. As far as anyone remembers.
404s power is infectious and contagious; a psychic virus that spreads from troll to troll, causing ‘holes’ to open up in the minds of the population. The ‘holes’ are carefully ‘shaped’ to allow very specific information to fall out. People forget whatever the Unit wants them to, the memories and everything surrounding them slowly ‘leaking’ out until they can’t even remember that they’ve forgotten anything. There’s nothing preventing them from re-learning what they’ve lost, but that hole stays there for decades without psychic surgery, so all they do is pour more water in a leaky bucket. The presence from these holes assures everyone involved with whatever event needs removal don’t remember what happened, and more importantly, keeps anyone not directly involved from ever becoming involved.
Keeps any questions from being asked. Keeps curiosity from being aroused. Keeps everyone ignorant and complacent. Keeps the Empire running smoothly.

DEMIURGE Event: the creation of a new deity or demigod, or something the officials believe has the potential to become one.
Entity 0001: Gl'bgolyb
Esoterrorist: alternian-style mashup of Esoteric and Terrorist used to denote an organization that uses eldritch influence and/or magic to disrupt Alternian normalcy and stability.
Screwtinizers: psychics specially trained in interrogation and extracting targeted information from the minds of prisoners, no matter the cost. Victims of screwtiny are often mentally destroyed by the end and rarely recover, but that's an acceptable loss. Can also be used to describe precognitives or retrocognitives going over what will be/what was a crime scene.
"Aberrant": shorthand/'official' term for eldritch bullshit, or a level of magic, mutation, or psychic ability that resembles it enough to trigger a...
MKB-Retaliation: Mother Knows Best-Retaliation. A term describing, specifically, a direct and destructive psychic attack against an aberrant force that Gl'bgolyb unleashes whenever she detects something else eldritch trying to enter her territory. About as subtle as a missile strike and does as much damage to the surroundings, as the attack is both mental and physical and ramps up in both intensity and area of effect if the previous strike didn't kill the target.

Incident description: Prisoners in attendance act as witnesses to the event. Despite the overwhelming mental trauma caused by the event, psychic screwtiny allowed for a rough recreation of the event. [REDACTED]. It is unknown how the group obtained this Mother Grub, and it is believed the assistance of Entity 0005 was involved. The Mother Grub was ritualistically mutilated in a manner as to maximize its suffering, but it remained alive and functional through likely anomalous means. [REDACTED]. High priests deposited their genetic material for consumption, and Entity 0005 is believed to [REDACTED], which accelerated the gestation period by several orders of magnitude.
The birth of Entity-91-D-01 [REDACTED]. No trace of the Mother Grub or the high priests were able to be located. Entity Class was tentative DEMIURGE; entity was able to override local reality with its will, but the newborn was incapable of defending itself meaningfully from the resulting MKB-Retaliation from E-0001. As such, it was later reduced to OFANIM.
Despite the extremely high civilian body count from this event, it is believed this was caused by the MKB-Retaliation due to the majority of the deaths being lowbloods, while highbloods at ground zero could be saved. [REDACTED]. Entity 91-D-01 is believed to have perished, though witnesses state it attempted to create and escape into a demiplane as it was assaulted. It is unknown if it managed to escape before the MKB-Retaliation destroyed it, or if it was too grievously wounded to survive even after escaping. Incident description: Provided by captured members of the group when placed under psychic duress by Empire Screwtinizers. Entity emergence is roughly similar to what occurred in Event 91-D-01, except that genetic material was provided via the collected remnants of Entity 91-D-01 rather than [REDACTED] E-0005. A larger portion of genetic material was donated by compatible members of the group, and such material was donated by members who were in committed blackrom and redrom relationships, apparently in the belief that Entity 91-D-01 was born of 'poor stock' due to the lack of emotional and chemical cohesion between original donors.
It is believed this is true, as [REACTED]. The resulting Entity was significantly more stable, resembling "a twisting pillar of gorgeous yellow light" rather than [REDACTED]. Resulting Entity was believed to reach full maturation in the span of several seconds, as signified by "the crown of faces" coalescing at its apex, resembling the faces of those in attendance whose minds it had consumed for information. Despite the significantly more stable birth, E-0001 was able to detect it and initiated an MKB-Retaliation, slaying it and most trolls in attendance despite the addition of several layers of anomalous defenses placed by the group. Entity Class was tentatively HASMAL, as it displayed similar reality-displacement as the previous Entity, but was incapable of defending itself from MKB-Retaliation.

Event 91-D-03: The appearance of Entity 91-D-03: Hastur III.

Due to the general resemblance it has to a baseline Alternian, it is believed this Entity is a direct offspring of Entity 91-D-02's surviving rather than a new creation. [REDACTED]. MKB-Retaliation was triggered upon the Entity being recognized as anomalous by an Alternian of the royal bloodline initially meant as a sacrifice to it, confirming [REDACTED]. Entity was capable of using anomalous powers to defend itself, confirming sapience and an intelligence on-par with a baseline Alternian. Royal bloodline Alternian was slain in response, and an unknown anomalous power was invoked to prevent further MKB-Retaliation events. Entity 91-D-04 possessed genetic and physical similarities to a baseline Alternian, preventing MKB-Retaliation events even when a royal bloodline was introduced and viewed the Entity, as E-0001 viewed it as an Alternian rather than an aberrant.

The first to be reborn. The greatest. The abomination. The presence behind every autonomous eye. Commander of legions, every remote drone and ship AI responding to its commands.
Once, a troll. Now, a tangle of flesh and wire, metal and mind numbed by endless information spanning a space station like kudzu over a field of trees. Old, perhaps, as the Empress herself. Maybe older. There is no longer a troll within the machine, worn away by time and rampaging technology.
Nothing remains of who it once was. Now it is tactics, it is command, it is war. it is endless.
Unit 002: AXECUTOR
The faceless. The dullahan. The guardian. The left hand of the Pariah. Ancient flesh stitched to old metal, kept aloft by forbidden magics long past when it should have rotted and rusted.
The first Axecutor, the first of the final judges. The bringer of the Empire’s Edge down upon the necks of those who’d rot it from the inside. it still holds that legendary weapon even today. Its blade is used frequently but only ever gets sharper.
Unit 003: PARIAH
The fool. The disgraced. The unsightly stain. Ancient, withered, rotting upon the throne she coveted, now chained to it until eternity ends. She wished to be the next Empress, and now she rules a world of the dead, an army unquestioning but unliving, much like herself. Though her mind rages, it cannot disobey an order.
The Gravetide is hers to command, the tomb-ships falling upon worlds where the cacophony of war has given way to the quiet of flies. Those whose bodies are whole, she takes for her legion. The ultimate weapon. The juggernaut. The apocalypse. Unstoppable force, immovable object. To some, the perfect representation of the Armorgeddon Unit project as a whole. A war hero, reborn as the Empire’s greatest weapon. The soldiers, the drones, the skirmishes and gunfights; these are the Empire’s mercy. It lets their foes believe they have a chance.
And then he arrives. And the battle ends.
Perfect propaganda piece. Him, standing atop a field of corpses. But what happens between the battles? This, the public does not see. They do not see his fear (what have i turned into), they do not hear his questions (am i still alive), they do not have to bear his outbursts (answer me).

The null. The black box. The absence. Lost time. Lost knowledge. Lost people.

Unit 413: THE SUN
The heat. The light. The punishment. The prism. The warden. There are no other guards on the RecalciTrance, and there does not need to be. They would only create additional points of failure in the Empress’ perfect system. the great machine she has built which breaks and remolds all who are fed into this sprawling political prison. In this place, a troll’s understanding of suffering does not suffice.
abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
Nothing is safe. Nothing is sacred. Body, mind, and soul, you will be unmade and unraveled, and spun back together not as you are, but as she wants you to be. All you are, brought into the light and scoured. She does not seek to understand you, why you do anything. She only wishes to find out where these... stains of yours are, that keep you from obeying the Empire, and scrub them out.

it cannot feel full but this does not mean it will not try. Living, dead, flesh, metal, stone, plant, friend, foe, it does not matter. Everything into the crushing, pulverizing maw. Everything. Everything. More. More. More.
Unit 461: BOGEYMAN
The whisper. The infiltrator. The presence. At the foot of your bed, in the closet, in the vent, anywhere something his size could not possibly fit. A body fully remade, mind bound to an experimental nanotechnology. Nowhere he cannot go. Nowhere he cannot follow. The perfect infiltrator with a mind that has been steadily ground away by time and toxin.
He thinks it’s funny. Funny how scared people get around him. He loves testing himself in every ship he enters, friend or foe. Slithering through the vents like a snake, blending into the walls like an octopus. How far can his limbs stretch? As far as they need to get you. How wide is his smile? Wide as it needs to swallow his targets whole. Where does they go?
Don’t ask.
It was experimental. One day, we may be able to get them back out.
Unit 533: 66SECTOR
The scientist. The great mind. The experimenter. These are titles he wants, but he is denied them in favor of more fitting ones: the sadist. The atrocity. The endlessly cruel. There are few crimes in the Empire worthy of being condemned to his ministrations, but being an alien lifeform that has refused subjugation and extinction is one of them. Oh, he’s so very curious on how their anatomy functions, and his curiosity can only be sated in one way.
The first step is always finding what chemical cocktails are needed to keep them awake, alive, and aware as they’re split open and prodded with an endless array of tools and stimuli. That always burns through the first batch. How lucky they are to perish in mere minutes, seconds if their barbaric gods favor them. The unlucky ones last days, perhaps weeks as he pries the secrets of their kinds’ weaknesses from their screaming nerves.
Unit 612: THE MOON’S ABSOLUTE
The cold. The secret. The prison. The protector, misunderstood.
Projects to reach the green moon rarely ever reach completion because of its meddling... but those that do, those that land on its surface, against all odds and all warnings to stop, to turn away?
What does the green moon have on it, that it would need a machine so horrible to contain it? Why are no lives allowed to arrive on its surface, and no broadcast or ship allowed to leave? Speculations abound. More questions are raised. More projects to explore the planet’s most curious neighbor are mounted, and more end in failure and tragedy.
