Sea Butterflies (Limacina ssp.) are small, free-swimming sea snails found in oceans all over the world. Unlike other sea snails -- which inch across ocean surfaces with a gastropodal foot -- they use two wing-like lobes to "flutter" along ocean currents! Because they are so abundant, they are a fundamental part of many species' diets and are, in turn, an irreplaceable link in the Earth's great food chain. Their fragile coiled shells serve as key indicators of ocean acidification and its effects on marine life worldwide. ๐
