I did not know until I was in college and walking around Arizona State University campus, that same-sex marriage was a political issue. I was raised on RuPaul, Too Wong Foo, Birdcage Theater, cross-dressers, and drag queens in Mexico. I also knew that there were homosexuals in my mother and father's graduating class.
I didn't know ā other people found it to be so profoundly different.
Mind you, I was aware that homosexuality existed and could potentially be a difficult thing for some people. But I never knew that it went to the extent it does now, and still is. My parents had discussed many times with us, and by discussed, I mean they just flat out said they didn't care. They shared they would worry about our safety, only because they had friends who are or were gay and suffered in a multitude of ways because of their life choice.
So, there was my comfort. I am not gay, I am heterosexual. Best defined as a demisexual heterosexual, if you want to get deep into it, but otherwise ā I'm sad to say that I am quite ordinary in that department.
Imagine your own reaction. You're just walking through your college campus, trying to figure out what adulthood is; and looking over to see a blond-haired blue-eyed girl wearing a t-shirt that said; "One man, one woman" and some other stuff about keeping it the same. I forget. Yes, she was a blond blue-eyed babe, and I was just walking past as she exited a dormitory smelling heavily of skunk marijuana.
Thinking back, I honestly cannot think of a time where I thought anything other than homosexuality as being normal. To me, it was as easy as picking your favorite color. Do you like green or blue? Well, some people like both. Okay.
So long as they were good people and did good things, I thought very little about it. I had a friend who had boyfriends and girlfriends. Because her mother was unaware, she managed to have sleepovers with her girlfriend. I found it hilarious and just hoped her mother wouldn't find out.
I thought that a gay couple could marry in the Catholic church. I am a Catholic. I thought gay people were abundantly welcomed and the old archaic thought process of 'gays are the devil' had been expunged by my mother and father's generation. I was absolutely stunned when it turned out to be completely wrong.
Cue the sudden news broadcast of transgender. Again ā my brain wondered what the difference between a cross-dresser, transvestite, and transsexual was? But my original thought process returned; if they are good people and do good things ā it didn't really matter to me.
As I got older, and as I continue to get older (I love vampires, but I am not one, contrary to some people's opinion of me.) I learned more and more about transitioning. The mental aspect of transitioning, the mental aspect of coming to terms with your own sexuality, and how it could sometimes be the most difficult thing a person could go through. That there are people out there who would abandon their own child because they liked the color green ā and the entire family liked purple.
That people were made homeless because they were gay, or transgender. Now, I've always known people were physically assaulted in multiple ways because they were homosexual or transgender. That hasn't been unknown to me. I learned more about the absolutely atrocious treatments homosexuals went through throughout history and some of them still continue today.
Gay camps. Are a thing. A terrible thing.
I write this in hopes that someone out there, who feels unsure or scared in any way ā that they know I am one person out of many. There has to be another person out there who is the same as me. Who had the same thought process as me and saw the same signs I did and wondered ā what did I miss? Ā
Iāve heard the same comments.
Ā "Well, they can't have kids." ā but don't we have thousands of children who need to be adopted or fostered? Also, Octomom is another thing.
"They'll just get divorced." ā I am the child of divorced parents. So, what?
"The children will get confused." ā You should stop doubting your childās intelligence, itāll give them a complex.
I'm a victim of my parents doing something right and my grandparents successfully instilling the "God loves everyone" motif that for some reason is much more complicated than I thought.
To anyone who is questioning their sexuality, or hesitant to speak out about it ā there have to be more people like me in the world. I am not alone, and neither are you. I am a Catholic born and raised Mexican American from a tiny town by the Mexican border, and I have always thought you were normal. Everyone else is the freak to me.
I have always thought you deserved the rights everyone else had because I thought you already had them.
I have always thought you were perfectly normal, and loved, and wanted, and accepted. Because I didn't know anything else.
So, if you don't know, aren't sure, afraid ā guess what? I am one person, and there are others like me, and I plan to raise my babies with the same thought process I had. So long as you are a good person, who does good things ā you're normal to me.

***WEDNESDAY REVIEW*** First off - WHY ARE MOVIES SO LONG NOW?ā¬ļø This movie is 2hr and 28minutes long. That is almost 3hrs. The last movie I willingly sat through that was that long was #lordoftherings . NOT Marvel. That being said the movie starts off going at top speed, so any build up after that makes everything seem SO slow. However, full concept is very entertaining. Makes for a good movie that wasnāt too painful to sit through. Also #davebautista is in it and he makes you sacred and also wanna hug him. Or is that just me? Super zombies with actual comprehensive thought process is a frightening concept and not everyone can a make mutant #madmax concept actually kind of work. I enjoyed it.
