hunger games reread observation #2: katniss genuinely has so much empathy for capitol residents its kinda crazy. she calls her design team idiots but also remarks that they are genuinely trying to help her. she feels that caesar is doing everything he can to help the tributes in their interviews. she doesn’t respond when cinna says “how despicable we must seem to you” irt the massive bounty of food they have access to at the push of a button. despite her internal acknowledgement of The Capitol as a whole being ghoulish and evil and her reflections on the roof seeing people dance and party in the street and hating them, once katniss is face to face with a capitol citizen (even the ones directly taking part in the games as an institution) she can’t help but acknowledge their humanity and she honestly kinda likes them more often than not

Dragon age origins is like…. You’re nineteen, new in town, and it’s your second day at pizza hut. You don’t even know how to work the register yet and you just watched your manager get carted off by the paramedics. You have no contact info for him, his next of kin, or corporate. The only other employee is the guy who’s been here for two weeks and is a bit of a doofus, and neither of you really know what you’re supposed to do now. You both desperately need this job though, and the doofus at least has a drivers license and *kiiinda* knows how to use the oven so you just. Shrug, and start taking orders and making pizzas and praying to god that the bills are on autopay.

And weirdly enough you’re really good at this: making pizzas and dealing with shitty customers and breaking up fights in the parking lot and pretending to be Duncan’s cousin on the phone so the utility company doesn’t cut off the power. But running a store is a lot of work for two dumb kids, so slowly you start accumulating a bunch of competent weirdos to help out, like the nun who left her convent because god told her to help you make pizzas, and the elderly school teacher who just survived a mass shooting, and the guy the papa johns down the street hired to run you over. And really there’s no way any of this should be working as well as it is - you’re absolutely committing fraud of some kind here - but you’ve managed to dodge the landlord every time he’s stopped by, and the health inspector never shows up to tell you to stop letting your dog hang out behind the counter and you’re all still kinda looking at each other and asking ‘are we allowed to just do this?’ before shrugging again and continuing to make pizzas, until somehow, through a series of unlikely technicalities, your doofus coworker ends up on the ballot for governor.

And after like five months of this the regional manager wanders in out of nowhere and you’re sure he’s about to chew your ass out for this mess, but it turns out he’s pretty chill and honestly kind of impressed with how you managed to keep the place up and running all on your own. So now you’re all thinking ‘thank god, there’s someone here who actually knows how to run a Pizza Hut’ only for him to get hit by a car two days later on the night of the Super Bowl.

also season 4 ended with such large scale catastrophe that i thought for Sure it would actually mean something, but it doesn’t. like hawkins was ripped apart by giant chasms. buildings crumbled. surely tons of people died just from standing where the gates opened right…. and like surely people saw unexplainable things …… you would think that the state of hawkins would be So changed at the start of this season but it really really isn’t. they still all go to school. the chasms are closed up now. no one outside our group of heroes still has any idea what’s going on. they still have access to all the materials they need via murray. like idk s4 ended with everyone going wowww everything is Really about to change this time!!! and it really didn’t like at all

the thing is, im always interested in The Paperwork. whenever The Characters moan and groan about The Paperwork and whenever it's left unspecified what The Paperwork entails i go aw... The Paperwork... u dont deserve this attitude, The Paperwork... im sure you're very interesting and important... this is because i like my job at The Paperwork factory and because i like homework and it's also because The Characters often hold positions of power attained through superhuman abilities and enforced with violence and i know that The Paperwork is there, aspirationally, to document their actions and protect people. from institutional neglect and from The Characters. when The Characters ignore The Paperwork to fuck each other on The Desk i think less of them for it. i do.

i made this post offhandedly, but resentment/dismissal of The Paperwork is a trope from procedural fiction and commercial sff that is really really common in fanworks bc it makes for an easy shorthand when u don't want to research or invent the details of a job, and i do seriously want to ask everyone to get skeptical of it. it's part of a broader narrative type of the ultra-talented Maverick, usually law enforcement or pseudo law enforcement (e.g. a monster hunter, a status-quo-enforcing time traveler, a man in black, a moral mercenary, etc.), whose ability to police the boundaries of Civilization ("normal," defined by hegemony, Flawed But Worth Preserving!) and protect a homogenous Public (white, heteronormative, bourgeois, documented, "law-abiding," "innocent," helpless!!) is limited not by his energy or ability, but by forces (small-minded, foolish, persnickety, overcautious, sexless, dull, effeminate!!!) of Overhead, from whence comes... The Paperwork.

The Paperwork might be generated by administrators, journalists, lawyers, judges, civilian oversight committees, the village elders or the intergalactic legislature, depending on the story. and who benefits from us telling each other stories that belittle & villainize those professions while lionizing The Maverick? "if only The Maverick were given unlimited resources, unlimited access, unlimited privacy in his operations, and unlimited use of excessive force, he would be able to protect The Public (and find love! maybe on The Desk)." you see it, right? this is how copaganda will get in your head.

Starting to mock up the mod page for Trans Your Hawke in anticipation of posting the public beta soon. Would love feedback on the introductory section. Is it clear? Does anything need to be further clarified? Should anything be rephrased? Am I "overusing" ""scare"" """quotes"""?

What it does

Trans Your Hawke allows you to mix and match three separate aspects in character creation which are typically bundled together as Hawke's "gender." These are:

Hawke's gender & pronouns: Whether Hawke is referred to as a man or a woman, with he/him or she/her pronouns, as handsome or beautiful, etc.

Hawke's appearance: Whether Hawke uses the "masc" or "fem" headmorph and body models.

Hawke's voice: Whether Hawke uses the audio recorded by Nicholas Boulton or Jo Wyatt, or whichever voice actors recorded your non-English localization of choice. (These are referred to within the mod as the "Garrett" and "Marian" voices.)

Trans Your Hawke makes three choices available for Hawke's gender & pronouns:

"Hawke is a man" with he/him pronouns.

"Hawke is a woman" with she/her pronouns.

"Hawke is bigender" with he/she pronouns. If you select this option, Hawke's gender will be randomized every time it is relevant, so NPCs will continuously switch up the gendered language they use to refer to Hawke. (While this is the only non-binary option available in the mod, it's also a very specific and narrow one. A different way to model a bigender/genderfluid identity could be, for example, to use the debug to swap Hawke's gender between the two binary options at various points in the game to represent Hawke changing up how he or she presents him or herself at a given time. Given limited options to model non-binary identity with existing recorded dialogue, I thought that this would be a fun option!)
