“Hey.” — @natanovna
The Winter Soldier meets Natasha's eyes, trying to gauge her expression. Or anything about her, really. He knew her? He knew her, he swore he did. Though, his memory had never been the best, so he had a difficult time determining where he'd seen her before.
"…Hey."
Nope, no, definitely not. Mimicking her felt wrong. And right? No, wrong. He wasn't supposed to be casual so he corrected himself, reverting back to a more standard formal dialogue.
"Hello?"
“You knew me.” Just three words from her that could possibly break something open in him.
Was she a mind reader? He hoped not. But, that confirmed his earlier suspicion. The Soldier didn't react for a good few seconds, weighing Natasha's words, trying to recall what she was talking about. Flashes, here and there. Things he wasn't supposed to know. Hits thrown, the flurry of ginger hair, some talk of—… Once the migraine that came with trying to remember hit him, he soured, the lingering memory of someone's smile fading away.
"I don't anymore."
Remembering had never done him any good. The words were said as an attempt to convince himself, to soothe his mind. They weren't entirely a lie, he didn't want to do that. Still, her simple statement nagged at him. He knew her. He definitely wasn't supposed to. What they'd do to him if they found out, he'd be—… He definitely shouldn't be encouraging this, this was wrong.
Somehow, Natasha caught the lie in his words; the hesitation in his voice was palpable. Yet she refused to push it further. Instead, she simply said, “You keep telling yourself that.”
And he would. He would tell himself that about any similar situation until the day he would no longer be useful. But, the stone that had been thrown had already created waves in the water, and Bucky's lips moved before he had a chance to think, far too quick for his own liking.
"What were we?"
It was a stupid question, he berated himself. He wasn't supposed to ask questions like that. The Soldier shook his head, both to try and shake the hurting thoughts out of his head, and to deny what he'd just asked.
"Do not answer that. I shouldn't know."
She observed his expression for a moment, “it doesn’t matter.” A pause and then, “not right now.” her voice souded almost desperate.
"It doesn't matter"? It felt like it mattered. If it didn't matter, then he wouldn't have asked. If it didn't matter, then she wouldn't have paused before adding on. Though, this was safer—for them both, really. The Soldier did his best not to grimace at the reply, telling himself this was for the best.
"Right… Acknowledged."
He murmured, forcing his eyes away. He could not keep up the dismissive act for long, because they slowly steered back to Natasha. They traitorously examined her face, trying to remember it, trying to memorize it.
She frowned at his bruised knuckles.
"You're hurt..."
@angel-from-madison-avenue
The Winter Soldier bristled at the comment, looking at her with some surprise. He had just settled down to recover, and now there was someone frowning at him. How did he not recognize he was being followed? Admittedly, it wasn't a false claim, he hadn't been very gentle in his recent mission… or the ones before that, really. Still, he didn't like being reminded of weakness. He flexed his hands, moving the metal one to cover up his knuckles.
"I'm…"
He paused, then looked at Rhaphyel with a frown of his own, suddenly aware of the fact that he wasn't obligated to agree with anyone outside of HYDRA. Unless— was she sent by HYDRA? Who was she? He hadn't been briefed about this beforehand.
"I will recover. Why is my state of any concern to you?"
"It's...sad to see you unhappy." She tilts her head, looking at him. "I won't hurt you, I can promise you."
She couldnt say for sure whether or not to help this human, could she get him out? Could she punish the ones hurting him?
"I'm not unhappy."
The Soldier retorted quickly, keeping his focus on the angel. Assumptions, assumptions— he wasn't allowed the privilege of being unhappy. As for "promising" not to hurt him, he had serious doubts.
"Identify yourself. Who sent you?"
"Your eyes tell me you're scared..." she blinked. "No one sent me, I just,...came."
"I am not—…"
He cut himself off, seeing no use in arguing. Did he actually look scared? He wasn't aware that his emotions were so visible. The Soldier looked Rhaphyel up and down, trying to find something that would indicate she was lying. Someone must have sent her. When he found nothing, he was only more confused.
"If no one sent you, you are not obligated to stay. You would do best to leave. I should not be disturbed."
Disturbed, influenced, talked to. The Soldier's eyes turned down to his hands, and he absentmindedly brushed his thumb over the bruised skin on his knuckles.
"I'm not afraid of you," she states firmly. She knew he was scared himself, certainly not of her. "I want to help you."
"I do not need 'help'. I am able to recover by myself."
The Soldier replied with a frown, looking back up from his knuckles. Help would imply weakness, and he wasn't weak. He didn't have the audacity to be weak. He'd show her just how strong he was if this went on.
"What are your true intentions?"
She blinked, brushing her fingers against his knuckles, a tingle following her slight touch. "I'm not sure...I can see why you want to know."
Last time she assumed anything, she was punished terribly..,
The Winter Soldier immediately stiffened at the touch, and reacted quickly to move some few feet away. His hands raised instinctively to protect himself, wrongly assuming that Rhaphyel's brush was an attack.
"'Not sure'? How are you unaware of your mission?"
The tingle from the lingering touch made him feel strange. He flexed his hands again, trying to ignore it.
“Hey, have you seen a…” Bucky trails off when he sees the Soldier, eyes widening slightly. “I… oh. You’re…”
@the-winter-soldierr
The Winter Soldier stiffens in place as he spots… himself? Someone eerily like himself? It had been decades since he actually acknowledged his reflection as his own, the man in the mirror was a stranger to him now, but this man was—… It takes a few seconds for his instincts to kick in, and he then feels his side for a weapon, uncaring for whatever the other was about to ask. He had bigger things to worry about.
"What… is this?"
The question sounds weak even to him, and he hates it.
Bucky puts his hands up immediately, eyes wide. “Woah! I’m not a threat, I promise. I’m just looking for my cat.” He watches the Soldier grab his weapon. “She’s white and fluffy, has big blue eyes… probably talked your ear off?”
The Soldier's hand remains rested against the grip of the weapon, still on alert. A cat. Oh, the cat. This must be Barnes, then? But what if it wasn't? He didn't make any acknowledgement that he knew what Bucky was talking about, deciding to maneuver this carefully.
"…You assume I've seen her?"
Bucky rubs the back of his neck, nervous. “I… I don’t know. If you have you’d know. I’m just worried. She’s going to get herself into a lot of trouble one of these days, you know?”
He stayed quiet for a moment, as if waiting for something bad to happen, like a punchline to a misleading joke. None came, to his surprise, so he spoke again.
"Yes. Yes, she will… if she hasn't already. I do not know where she is wandering now, but she was here."
Bucky nods. “Okay. I’ll… I’ll keep looking.” He sighs and looks the Soldier up and down again. “Thank you… Soldat…?” He tries, unsure what to call him.
Evidently, he reacted positively to the name. Either to that, or to the confirmation that Bucky was satisfied with his answer. Ex-HYDRA, she'd said— and the Soldier didn't want to risk disappointing even his past superiors. His hand slowly left the grip of his weapon, the caution bleeding out of him. He still wanted to know why Bucky looked so much like him.
"Affirmative…… Сэр (Sir), I—"
The Soldier hesitated, containing his discomfort at his thoughts. Would he get anything out of asking? Would it be rude to ask? It would be best not to, wouldn't it. Don't ask. You're not supposed to ask questions.
"…I hope that you retrieve her."
Bucky nods, but flinches when he calls him sir. He doesn’t like that at all. “I’m sure I will.” He runs a hand through his hair, and a few seconds later Alpine darts out of somewhere and hops into Bucky’s arms.
“Dad!!”
Bucky smiles. “Hey there…”
The Winter Soldier watched as the two reunited, feeling strange. He'd never been good with emotions, they weren't necessary in his line of work, but seeing the two so fond of each other—… He stayed quiet since he wasn't being spoken to, his eyes focused on how Bucky held Alpine.
Bucky scratches Alpine’s ears gently. She blinks up at him, then glances at the Soldier. “Dad… I think he’s…?”
Bucky sighs. “Yeah, I know.” He doesn’t know how to approach this, really. “Do you… are you okay?”
The Soldier blinked himself back into the moment, his gaze turning up to lock with Bucky's, then down to Alpine's. He pushed down whatever strange emotion he was feeling, his expression reverting into a resting glare.
"…You have found each other. There is no longer a need to stay here, unless you want to get hurt."
He avoided the question on purpose, and turned his head to look away.
Bucky nods, shifting so Alpine can climb onto his shoulder. “Yes… but I’ve never been one to leave someone behind. Tell me, Soldat, do you know who you are?”
That was an odd question, he thought to himself. Of course he knew. It had been burned into his mind like a brand. He looked forward at Bucky and Alpine again, straightening his posture as if he was at attention.
"Affirmative, I do. The Winter Soldier."
The response sounded like it was rehearsed—which it was. He knew this was the correct answer. The people who stared back at him when he was on the chair said this was the correct answer.
"Thinking it's a joke is too harsh, isn't it, James?" — Nora.
The Soldier hesitated, looking Nora over briefly. He should have focused on the fact that Nora had accurately guessed his thoughts, but it was the name that grabbed his attention in the end. James. Did he know a James? Was that name important? It felt like it had a weight to it.
"……No, it isn't."
The words were said with caution, his eyes still narrowed from the look-over. The name wasn't his, but who else would Nora be talking to if not him? The question was probably meant for him, right? His head was in pain, and he could no longer think about it without his body refusing the thought, so he corrected Nora.
"The Winter Soldier. That's who I am. You mistake me for someone else."
"Man, it's really..you.."
The Winter Soldier was not fond of seeing things he shouldn't. Reflections of a man he didn't know, didn't want to know, but should've known. His body went on high alert when he heard Bucky speak, when he saw him, and he moved back almost instantly. This man looked so much like him, and nothing like him at all. He was not briefed about this. Both the identity crisis and the fact that he was talking to—…
"What? It's 'me'?… Do you know of me? Who are you? Identify yourself."
He was already calculating the different ways to defend himself if it was necessary.
"I'm..well, I'm you, but about 10 years....older. If that makes sense.." Bucky looked at the other. "I know all about you..what we've done."
That answer was not what he expected. Or wanted. This must've been some kind of new deception strategy.
"Negative, it does not make sense."
The undercurrent of warning in his voice was hard to miss. He was not liking this. This was foreign, which meant he didn't know how to navigate it, and that was never good for him.
"You are not the only one who knows 'all about' me, nor about what I've—I've—done. So, I repeat, identify yourself."
"I know it's way out of the park for you," Bucky looked at his other. "But you gotta believe me--" he pulled up his sleeve, showing his own metal arm. "Look at it, it's exactly the same, bloodstained and worn out."
The Soldier's eyes landed on Bucky's arm, and he had to genuinely hold back from expressing his emotions on his face. "Exactly the same, blood-stained and worn out". This was too familiar.
"…Is this another test?"
He didn't sound too sure anymore. He was evidently grasping at straws, trying to rationalize the situation with what he was familiar with.
Sienna tilts her head a bit as she recognized them. She was really quiet as she sighs. "Another soldat.... I just hope you're eating well is all...and getting some sleep..."
@ancient-siren
The Winter Soldier narrowed his eyes at Sienna, mimicking her head tilt as he analyzed her. Did he know—… Nevermind, he should focus, not wonder about things. He straightened his posture again.
"I have enough of both to keep myself stable."
Stable was good enough. He ate and slept enough to stay on his feet, enough to be useful in missions. HYDRA wouldn't send him out in a poor condition, they needed assets that could do their job and do it well, not die in the field. Though, he wouldn't admit if he wasn't stable either way, not to her.

"What are your true intentions?"
"Are you okay, dear? I'm always here for you." — Nora.
"Always here". What a horrible joke, he thought.
"I am operational."
The Winter Soldier replied curtly, emphasizing the correct term. "Okay" was subjective. He didn't deal in subjectives, and he certainly didn't want to think about whether he was alright. He was always supposed to be alright. If he wasn't okay, then that'd mean something was wrong with him, and he'd have to get hurt and start all over again. He didn't want that. So, operational it was.
