(Steve switched places with Pre-serum Steve. He got sucked into the past and pre-serum Steve is now in the future. Rping this as the pre-serum Steve in the future:))

Steve doesn’t know what happened, one second he’s standing in his apartment, the next a blinding light and he’s standing in an alleyway, an alleyway he recognizes way too well, the 40s. He turns quickly to see a blinding light, and what looks like a portal closing, and that’s the last thing he sees before he’s shut into the 40s

Pre-serum Steve shifts in the bed he’d been transported to, letting out a small pained sound, he has a blinding headache, but that’s not new, what does feel new is the bed he’s in… and the fact that someone is in the bed with him. “What…?” He opens his eyes and frowns, this isn’t his apartment… He sits up quickly, eyes wide, shoving at the person in the bed. “Get out! Who are you?!”

Bucky groans and reaches to pull Steve back down. “Stevie… what is it…?” He mumbles, frowning when he’s shoved. Alpine and Liho hiss quietly as they’re woken up. Bucky blinks slowly, trying to wake up, not yet realizing that this isn’t his Steve. “Lay back down…”

Steve kicks at Bucky panicked. “Get off of me!” That sounds like Bucky but… wrong? He gasps at the cats and tries to roll off the bed, why is the bed so big? “Let me go!” He kicks Bucky in the stomach hard.

Bucky frowns and winces as he’s kicked back, scrambling to stand up. “Hey, woah— Steve?” He looks him over, eyes widening as he realizes Steve is… tiny again.

“Get away!” Steve flings a pillow at him, scrambling and falling off the bed, something is very wrong. “Who are you?!” He throws another pillow at him, breathing quickly.

Bucky barely notices the pillows. He frowns and puts his hands up. “Hey, woah. It’s Bucky. I’m Bucky—“ Alpine watches Steve with worry and Liho presses against her side.

“Bucky?!” Steve sits up, flinging back onto the wall, wincing as his back collides with it. “Why do you look like that? Why are we in the same bed here- where am I?!”

Bucky moves over, eyes wide. “Hey, woah. We’re at our place. We… what year do you think this is?”

“It’s 1939!” Steve yells in a panic, he slams his head back into the wall. “Who are you- you don’t look right!”

Bucky rushes over to grab Steve’s head, stopping him. “I know, I know I do— this is going to sound crazy, but you’re in the future, okay? I’m still your Bucky. I’m still with you til the end of the line.”

Steve frantically grabs at Bucky’s hands, trying to shove them off. “Stop lying! You’re insane-" He looks around frantically. “You- no, no you’d- no!”

Bucky shakes his head. “Steve, look at me! Look at my eyes! You know my eyes—“ except they’re duller now… “you put newspapers in your shoes— and we got kicked out of the Wizard of Oz because I was describing the colors to you—“

Steve gasps and looks into his eyes, his hands clinging onto Bucky’s. “How… how do you know that?” He whispers, shaking. “Where am I? Bucky- I… I don’t know where I am-”

Bucky shakes his head. “Just try to breathe, okay? Let’s… let’s get out of here. I don’t want the cats to kill you—“ he scoops Steve up and brings him to the living room. Madra’s asleep on the couch.

Steve holds onto Bucky instantly. “We don’t have cats…? I’m allergic.” Steve shudders and looks around the living room with wide eyes. “Bucky where are we?!” His breathing picks up, panic coursing through him. “Why is there a dog- Bucky?!”

Bucky holds him close, trying to calm him down. “I know. I know you are. But… I always wanted one, okay? I… we’re at my place. It’s going to be okay.” He frowns. “That’s Madra. She’s… mine too.”

“Where are we?!” Steve shoves at Bucky, breathing fast and erratic. He stares down at Madra, eyes wide. “How- you said the future, I don’t understand- I don’t understand! This isn’t funny, stop pranking me Bucky, it’s not funny!”

Bucky grabs Steve’s wrist with his metal hand. “I’m not pranking you! Look at me, Steve! I’m way older than I was when I saw you last, right?”

Steve lets out a choked scream when the metal hand grabs him. He stares at it with wide eyes, his eyes flick up to Bucky’s face. “Yeah- what’s happening… Bucky what’s happening?!”

Bucky curses and lets go. Madra startles awake, looking around in confusion. She walks over to Steve, sniffing him curiously until she recognizes his scent and her tail starts wagging happily. “Just take a breath, okay? I’ll explain everything once you’re calm—“

Steve startles back, shoving Madra away, eyes wide and panicked. He has no idea what’s going on. “Bucky-” He turns to face him, breathing quickly. “I can’t breathe- I can’t breathe!” He grabs at his chest.

Madra whines and stumbles back. Bucky grabs his hands. “Fuck! I… I might have an inhaler somewhere—“

Might- Bucky always has one, maybe this isn’t his Bucky- Steve kicks Bucky hard and makes a dash for the door.

Bucky winces and stumbles back. “Steve wait! There’s one in my bathroom, I think! Just— please stay!”

Steve doesn’t listen, he flings the door open and stumbles into the street, his eyes immediately widen and he falls back, nothing is the same- He cries out as cars go by, quickly covering his ears, everything’s so loud-

Bucky reaches out to help cover Steve’s ears. “Just come back inside… please.”

Steve cries out and nods, falling back against Bucky’s chest, his own stuttering.

Bucky pulls him close and guides him back inside. “… sit down. I’ll explain any questions you have.”

“What’s happening?” Steve whispers, shakily sitting down on the couch.

Bucky sits down with him. “I think… you and my Steve swapped places… because he was with me up until you showed up.”

Steve frowns and runs his hands down his face, breathing heavily. “I… we’re alive still?” He shifts and looks at Bucky. “You’re not my Bucky-“

“… some weird shit happened. I don’t want to… I don’t know. You shouldn’t worry about that.” He sighs and looks down at his metal hand. “… I know. But I still care for you all the same.”

Steve nods shakily, he frowns at the metal hand, staring down at it carefully. “I don’t…” He trails off and looks away, biting at his lip hard. “I want to go home, Bucky… can you get me home? Please…”

Bucky nods quickly. “I’ll try my best to get you home, love. It just might take a while.” He doesn’t notice the pet name slipped.

Steve looks up sharply, eyes narrowing. “What did you just call me?” He shifts back, shoulders tensing up.

Bucky blinks, confused. “What? What did I say?” He didn’t even realizes he said that… it’s just so natural to him.

“You called me love.” Steve frowns and shifts further back, his eyes flicking over Bucky quickly. “You can’t call me that-”

Bucky blinks. “I— Steve, it’s okay. Gay marriage is legal now. Some people are still dicks about it, but…” he holds out his hand, showing off his wedding ring.

Steve makes a face. “It can’t be legal. They’ll never let it be legal and I- I’m not gay! I’m not-” Steve steps back, he stares at the ring, frowning. “You married someone?” He sounds… devastated. “Who?”

Bucky looks down at his ring, then looks to Steve with a soft smile. “I married you, Steve. I always wanted to.”

Steve blinks rapidly, a looks of disbelief coming over his face. “You… you married me?” He whisper, a few tears pricking at his eyes.

Bucky nods. “I did, darling.” He reaches over to cup Steve’s face. “… because I love you. I always have.”

Steve startles at Bucky’s touch, he slowly leans into it. “So have I…” He whispers, looking terrified. He looks down, tears in his eyes. “We can actually… be married?”

Bucks nods, gently wiping his tears. “We’ve been married for a couple months now…” he hums, debating whether or not to tell Steve about the twins.

Steve slowly pulls back. “Really? I can’t… I can’t believe it.” He whispers shakily, he runs his hands down his legs, glancing around nervously, like he’s expecting someone to come and yell at them. “People are okay with it?”

Bucky nods. “Yeah, they are. I mean, some people fucking suck, but… it’s fine. Their opinions don’t matter.”

Steve smiles and ducks his head down, face flushing a soft pink for a moment before he shakes his head. “Good… that’s um… good.” He glances Bucky over. “I got you…”

Bucky smiles. “Yeah, you got me…” he sighs and looks Steve over. Is it odd that he kinda missed when Steve was smaller than him? When Steve fit in his arms perfectly?

Steve smiles to himself for a moment. He looks back to Bucky carefully. “So…” He trails off, pressing his hand to his abdomen with a very small pained sound. “What do we do now?” His Brooklyn accent is thicker, like it used to be before everything happened.

Bucky shrugs. “I’m not entirely sure… just try to figure out how to get you home.”

Steve nods slowly, he eyes Bucky for a moment. “We seem happy… what if I just… stay. Just for a while.” Steve looks up, his eyes aren’t as dull as Bucky’s Steve’s have become. “I’ve got nothin’ back home…”

Bucky frowns. “I mean… if you really want. But.. no. My past self needs you, Stevie. He always needed you.”

“Right… sorry. Can’t stay here.” Steve looks down, wrapping an arm around his stomach. “Yeah… you’re hopeless without me.” He teases, a small grin coming into his face.

Bucky frowns, reaching out to take his hand. “Yeah… I know… absolutely hopeless without my Stevie beside me…”

Steve smiles and squeezes his hand shakily. “Yeah… you need me jerk.” He shifts and hugs his stomach, taking a few slow breaths.

Bucky nods, then looks Steve up and down. “Shit! Are you hungry? I’ll get you food—“

Steve blinks and shakes his head. “Relax Buck… some food would be nice, but we can wait, I don’t want to waste food.”

Bucky shakes his head. “We have food now, love. Money’s not an issue anymore.”

Steve blinks in surprise. “We do?” He shifts back and presses a hand to his stomach, biting his lip.

“We do.” He gets up, gently guiding Steve to the kitchen with him. “Why don’t I just make some pasta? That’ll be quick.”

“Can we really afford that?” Steve scrunches his nose up, he trips over his feet a bit, biting the inside of his cheek hard.

Bucky nods. “We can… I promise.” He grabs stuff from the cupboard and starts cooking.

Steve watches with a soft expression. He shifts and sits on a chair in the kitchen, leaning his head heavily on the table.

Bucky watches him out of the corner of his eye, sighing softly. Alpine hops onto the table, looking at Steve. “I didn’t think you used to be this small…” she tilts her head.

Steve turns and stares at Alpine with complete shock, he lets out a sharp scream and flings a glass off the table at Alpine. “Possessed cat! Bucky! The cat is talking-”

Alpine shrieks and scrambles over to Bucky, clambering into his arms. He scoops her up and turns back to Steve. “Woah! She’s not possessed! She can just… do that!” Alpine stares at Steve with wide, betrayed eyes.

Steve stands quickly, mumbling prayers under his breath as he stares at Alpine. “What do you mean she can just do that! Cats don’t talk Buck-” Steve shifts towards the door.

Bucky flinches, having completely forgotten how religious Steve used to be. “… Steve… there’s a lot more to the world than we knew. Gods, monsters… a talking cat is honestly one of the most normal things I’ve encountered.”

Steve steps back, still mumbling under his breath. “Buck, you really expect me to believe that?” He shakes his head. “Why are you lying to me? We would’ve found all those things by now!” He steps back again, looking panicked. “You have a demon cat-”

Bucky sighs, setting Alpine on the ground. “Keep Liho and Madra away from Steve. He’s allergic to all of you right now.” Alpine nods and darts off after taking one last look at Steve. “… I know it’s hard to believe. It really is. But… so much has changed, but I’d never lie to you.”

Steve steps back, pressing his back into the wall, watching Alpine run out. His eyes flick to Bucky. “You promise, you promise you’re not lying to me?” He shifts and holds out his hands towards Bucky. “I’m sorry- I didn’t mean to… upset the cat- I’m sorry, none of this makes sense.”

“I promise. I’m not lying to you.” He walks over, taking Steve’s hands. “… it’s alright. She’ll be a little grumpy for a while, but that’s nothing new.”

Steve nods slowly, he curls his hands around Bucky’s hands. “I called her a demon-” He shifts and hugs Bucky tightly. “Buck- I’m so overwhelmed-”

Bucky shakes his head. “I’m sure she’s been called worse.” He startles, then hugs Steve back tightly. “… I know you are.”

Steve hugs him tightly, he fits into Bucky’s arms perfect. “I’m sorry- it’s so much…” He closes his eyes.

Bucky holds him close, shocked at how well he fits. He’d almost forgotten… “I know it’s a lot… I understand, really.”

Steve buries his face into Bucky’s chest, hes so familiar. He takes a few shaky breaths, he hides in Bucky’s arms.

Bucky hums and scoops him up, holding him with one arm as he finishes the food. “… I’m gonna have to put you down for us to eat…”

“You can still carry me.” Steve smiles softly at that, he nods and tips his head against Bucky’s shoulder.

Bucky smiles. “Oh… fine…” he gets two plates set up, then slowly sets Steve on a chair. “I’ll hold you after.”

Steve beams up at Bucky. “I’ve still got you wrapped around my finger.” He laughs and takes a small bite of food.

Bucky laughs. “What?? No you don’t!” He gives him a playful shove, harder than he meant to. He’s not used to Steve’s lack of strength without the serum.

“Yeah I do-” Steve cuts himself off with a sharp cry as he stumbles to the ground, falling out of his chair, he bites his lip and grabs his ribs.

Bucky gasps and scrambles over, reaching for him. “Fuck— I’m sorry! I didn’t— I didn’t mean to—“

“It’s okay!” Steve holds his hands out, grabbing onto Bucky and sitting up. “I know you didn’t mean to.” He winces and shakes his head. “It’s okay.”

Bucky shakes his head. “It’s not okay— I hurt you.” He pulls Steve into a hug.

“Barely- Buck you just shoved me a little.” Steve melts into the hug, fitting into his arms perfectly.

Buck buries his face in Steve’s hair. “I pushed you off a chair!”

“On accident Buck!” Steve hugs him tightly, snuggling down into Bucky’s chest happily.

Bucky sighs. “Yeah… but still…” he shakes his head. “Why don’t we finish eating, love…? You need to get some meat on your bones.”

Steve nods and gets up into the chair. “You know I’m always stick thin.” He smiles weakly and starts to eat.

“And I need to fix that!” He grins and pokes Steve’s ribs, gentler this time.

Steve laughs and shoves Bucky’s shoulder. He munches on the food with a small smile. “Hey Buck… can I… can I kiss you…?”

Bucky blinks, then nods. “… if that’s what you really want, then yeah.”

“I want to know what it’s like… I’ve always wanted to kiss you.” He whispers with a shy smile.

Bucky smiles. “Yeah? I always wanted to kiss you too.” He leans over, but lets Steve make the final decision if they kiss or not.

Steve lets out a shaky breath before he presses his lips firmly to Bucky’s, shakily resting his hands on his shoulders.

Bucky waits a moment, then slowly kisses back. His hands slip down to Steve’s hips, holding him gently.

Steve startles at the touch but leans into it. He lets out a soft breath, pulling back from the kiss. “I kissed you…”

Bucky smiles. “Yeah, you did. How’d it feel, love?” He pulls Steve closer.

“Good… but like I’m going to hell.” Steve whispers. He blinks and looks away, mumbling a prayer.

Bucky’s face immediately falls. “You’re not going to hell, Steve. You’re not.”

Steve frowns and sits back. “Yes I am.” He shakes his head, going back to mumbling prayers to himself.

Bucky shakes his head. “No you’re not. Not for this. Loving men isn’t a sin.”

“Yes it is.” Steve snaps, shuffling back. “I shouldn’t have kissed you.” He looks around the room with wide eyes. “We never should’ve gotten married in the future, it’s wrong Bucky. How could you let us get married? You know it’s wrong!”

Bucky frowns. “No, no it’s not wrong—“ he grabs Steve’s wrist. “Because I love you! I always have, since the day we met!”

“Yes it is!” Steve tries to get his wrists back but gives up, his hands shaking in Bucky’s. “So have I and I hate it! I hate that I love you!” He gasps out, chest heaving.

Bucky shakes his head, gently pulling Steve’s hand to his lips, gently kissing his knuckles. “… I felt that way for so long… it’s not a sin.”

“It is…” Steve whispers shakily, he watches Bucky kiss his knuckles. “I love you- I love you I’m sorry- I’m broken…”

Bucky shakes his head. “You’re not broken. You’re anything but broken, my love.”

“How are we not broken? We’re wrong.” Steve shudders and shifts, grabbing onto Bucky, hiding against his chest.

Bucky shakes his head. “… even if my love for you was wrong… I’d still choose it every time… it’s worth it, loving you. You’re my everything, Stevie.”

Steve keeps his face pressed into Bucky’s chest, hiding his tears. “And I’d choose you.” He whispers shakily. “I’m terrified to love you…”

Bucky nods and gently kisses Steve’s head. “… I know you are. It’s going to work out, I swear… we… we have kids…”

“I love you, every day I’ve loved you.” Steve lifts his head, quickly wiping away tears. “Kids?” He scrunches up his nose confused. “How?”

“Some magic…” he shakes his head with an amused grin. “You wanna meet them?”

Steve nods shakily, looking so confused. “Yeah… yeah okay…”

Bucky nods and brings Steve into the nursery. Sarah and Maria are both happily babbling at each other, trying to stand up in their cribs. They’re not quite there yet. “This is Sarah and Maria…” he silently hopes that Steve doesn’t question why Maria doesn’t look like either of them all that much.

Steve stares at them, an unreadable expression on his face. He shakes his head and takes a small step back. “I can’t- we shouldn’t… it’s unnatural-” He freezes and softens when they babble more. “They’re our kids?” He whispers amazed, slowly moving over to the cribs. “Hi… wait Sarah… after my Ma?”

Bucky nods, putting a gentle hand on Steve’s shoulder. “Yeah, after your Ma… Sarah Winifred and Maria Rebecca.”

Sarah reaches for him with wide eyes. “Papa!”

Steve beams and looks down at the girls. He gasps softly. “Hi honey…” He very slowly picks her up, a few tears pricking at his eyes. “Oh- she looks just like us…” He glances to Maria and stops. “Buck… she… Maria doesn’t look like me at all…”

Sarah giggles and grabs at his face. Bucky scoops Maria up when she starts to fuss about not being held. “… she’s… not technically yours. Not biologically, anyway.” He sighs and turns away, unsure how to explain the fact that not only are they together, but they also have two other partners…

“What?” Steve frowns, cuddling Sarah to his chest. “But…” He bites his lip and looks away. “Who’s Buck? Why… did you cheat on me?” He whispers, sounding so utterly devastated. “Let me see her.” He sets Sarah in the crib, shakily eeaching for Maria.

Bucky shakes his head, eyes wide. “No! No, Christ, I would never! We have another partner… his name is Tony. We’re both dating him. He’s…” he trails off, realizing this Steve doesn’t know Howard yet. He hands Maria over, who beams up at him. “Pa!” She giggles.

“I didn’t think you would.” Steve whispers thickly. His brow furrows up in confusion. “I’m really going to hell.” He mumbles to himself, he takes Maria, gently bouncing her. “Hi…” He frowns a bit. “I… Bucky… I don’t understand why I would… date anyone but you.”

Bucky gently puts a hand on his shoulder. “You’re not…” he sighs. “… you… actually started dating him before you did me… I was… technically dead for a while. And I’m sure if you met him you’d understand. Tony’s wonderful.”

Steve head snaps up, he looks completely horrified. “Dead-” He sets Maria in the crib quickly, shaking his head. “I wouldn’t, I would never- I would never date anyone but you! Dead?!” Steve jerks away from Bucky, breathing heavily.

Bucky winces. That… was definitely not the right thing to say. He grabs Steve’s arm, trying to get him to focus on him. “Hey, it’s okay. I… I was a prisoner of war. Assumed dead, but I was fine! Really!” Because telling him about the Soldier would probably cause Steve to freak out way worse than this.

Steve grabs onto Bucky’s face, breathing quick and sharp as he runs his hands down his face. “No, no you didn’t! No! No that can’t have happened!” Steve sobs angrily, his hands shaking as they run over Bucky’s face. “No!”

Bucky leans into his hands. “Look at me! I’m okay, really! I was just… gone for a few years—“ except he’s clearly scarred, physically and emotionally and mentally. His eyes are so dull.

“No! No that’s not okay!” Steve jerks back, hitting his head on the wall, breathing quickly, he slides down the wall, hands pressed to his face. “I- why didn’t I help you?! Did I just sit by useless while you died?!”

Bucky crouches down in front of him, hands up. “There’s nothing you could’ve done! I know if you were able to you would’ve saved me.”

Steve tips his head back, breathing choppy and uneven. “Stop lying to me- stop lying to me!” He presses a hand to his chest. “I would’ve saved you! Why didn’t I?!”

Bucky shakes his head. “You tried! You really tried! If you had you would’ve fallen with me! We would’ve both been captured!”

“Fallen?! Captured-“ Steve shakes his head, starting to look utterly overwhelmed. “No, no- no-”

Bucky grabs his hands gently. “It’s okay… Steve, if I hadn’t had fallen… we wouldn’t have gotten together after.”

Steve clings to his hands, tears in his eyes, panic coursing through him, his Bucky- no! Steve’s chest heaves. “It’s okay?”

Bucks nods. “I promise you, it’s okay. Just take a moment to breathe, okay?”

Steve takes a few slow shaky breath, nodding jerkily. “You’re safe?” He gasps out, horror in his eyes.

Bucky nods. “I’m safe. I’m really safe.” He pulls Steve closer.

Steve shifts and flings his arms around Bucky, melting into him. “I’m sorry.” He whispers, a moment later his body tenses up, Steve lets out a pained sound, grabbing at his head.

Bucky scoops him up, pulling Steve close. “Hey, woah— it’s okay… what is it, love? What hurts?”

“My head- Bucky my head!” Steve cries out, clutching at his head.

“Just hang on, okay? I’ll get you some pain killers—“ he carries Steve to the bathroom, digging for non-super Soldier pain killers.

Steve curls into himself, breathing heavy and pained. “Feels like it’s on fire Bucky!” Steve bites his lip hard, the pain feels new-

Bucky grabs him some pain killers finally and puts them in his mouth. “I need you to swallow, love.”

Steve gags but swallows the pills, one hand still pressed to his forehead. “Buck- this is new… new pain-” He claws at his head, he feels wrong-

Bucky nods and carries him to bed, hoping lying down will help. “I’ll stay with you through all of it, darling.”

“My head-” Steve gasps and curls up in the bed. “Bucky it feels like it’s going to explode-“

Bucky curls up with him. “Focus on my voice. Can you do that?”

Steve nods shakily. “Yeah-” He chokes out, pressing his hands to his forehead.

Bucky gently kisses his cheek. “Okay… I’ve got you. I’ll always take care of you, love.”

“You do-” Steve curls into Bucky, hiding down in his chest, he fits perfect. His head feels like it’s killing him-

Bucky wishes he could do more. He doesn’t know what’s happening and that scares him—

Steve breathes carefully as he lays against Bucky, starting to fall asleep. His body not reacting well… breaking down a hit from being in the future.

Bucky holds him close, like he’s the most precious thing in the world. He is, really.

Steve slowly drifts to sleep, tucked up incredibly close to Bucky, feeling safe in his arms.

Bucky follows him to sleep not too long after. Curling up around Steve feels so natural.

Eventually morning comes, Steve’s still asleep when Bucky wakes up, just like in the past. Steve snuggles further against Bucky.

Bucky smiles blankly, pulling Steve closer. He doesn’t… exactly realize this isn’t the past. This feels so right…

Steve smiles and cuddles into Bucky. “Feel better.” He mumbles, happily tucking himself into Bucky’s chest. This feels like home…

Bucky nods. “That’s good…” he hums and gently kisses Steve’s head.

Steve melts at the kiss, home. He shuffles further against Bucky.

Bucky smiles, then looks around blankly. “… this isn’t our place… where are we…?”

Steve blinks and glances around. “I’m in the… future.” Steve winces.

Bucky sits up, trying to make sense of this. “… you’re small again…” he frowns. “… you’re not my Steve.”

“I came here from the future.” Steve frowns and sits back. “I’m sorry.” He shakes his head.

Bucky nods, thinking for a moment. “… usually when something like this happens it fixes itself by now…”

Valerie crashes -- really crashes, uncharacteristically off-balance -- into Bucky's living room, late one night. She's... drunk? She hasn't been drunk since... ever. Not unless you count when Hydra would make her drink.

"Dad!" She calls out, stumbling into his arms. "You're here!"

Valerie all but pouts when he says that. "Dont want to slow down," she complains. "I feel fantastic!" She's hammered.

Bucky shakes his head, pulling her into a hug. “You need to get something that isn’t alcohol in your system.”

Valerie glares, even though she hugs him back. "Why?? I feel great," she argues petulantly.

Bucky shakes his head, giving her a stern dad glare back. “You look like shit. I’m getting you food.”

Valerie withers under the glare a little bit. "Fine," she says, crossing her arms over her chest. "Spoilsport."

Bucky sighs. “I know… I’m so horrible.” He leads her to the kitchen, making her sit down as he searches the fridge. “Is leftover Chinese okay?”

Valerie shrugs. "Fine," she answers, not really caring what she eats. She doesn't want to eat anything either way. She's enjoying being high as a kite.

Bucky nods and reheats it for her, then sets it in front of her. “Here. Eat, please…” he’s visibly worried.

When Steve was pulled from the ice something was wrong. He hit his head hard and slept for 70 years… things had gotten messed up in his mind. Neurological problems along with a few other things.

Steve’s currently laying in his bed in his room in the tower, his body doesn’t work well anymore. He can’t do much for himself, though he tries to insist he can. Sometimes he struggles with his memory, occasionally has meltdowns, which he usually refuses to acknowledge happened.

Steve stares up at the ceiling, trying to will himself to get up before anyone comes in to help him, he can move his stupid leg, he can walk- Steve shifts and bites his lip frustrated, his legs feel heavy and useless. He flushes when he hears his door open. He hates that he needs help.

Bucky enters the room, eyes glazed over. He never truly started recovering with Steve like this. Steve is his mission. He needs to take care of him all the time… his head doesn’t have room for things outside of this mission. He slowly sits down at the edge of the bed. “… you okay…?”

Steve shakes his head, staring at the wall, his body useless to move. “I’m fine.” He snaps, trying to move his legs, he grunts in frustration, barely able to sit up, he manages to slightly but his body gives out and he falls back into the bed, a frustrated cry leaving him.

Bucky nods slowly, then pulls Steve to sit up a bit better, leaving him against the headboard. “… you don’t seem fine.”

Steve glares for a moment before taking a few slow breaths. “I’m just struggling.” He bites his lip hard. “I’m fine.”

Bucky doesn’t even notice the glare. He never notices… he rests his hand over Steve’s. “… do you need anything? Food?”

Steve doesn’t really know what to think, he can tell something is off with Bucky, he’s not quite himself. He lets out a frustrated breath again, running his hands down his face. “I want to get out of bed.”

Bucky nods. “Can you stand?” He stands up, gently guiding Steve up. “We can go for a walk.”

“Not really-” Steve groan in pain as Bucky helps him up, he holds onto him tightly, stumbling a bit. He hates this so much- he can’t even walk by himself!

Bucky frowns, then opts to carry Steve instead. He makes sure Steve is comfortable before pulling him into a bridal carry.

“Bucky-” Steve lets out an angry breath, lightly shoving at his chest, his hands feel weak. “Bucky I can walk!” He yells frustrated.

Bucky frowns, then sets him down, keeping an arm around him. He just… stares blankly.

“Sorry-” Steve whispers, shame filling his face. He frowns at the blankness coming from Bucky. Steve takes a small step and… his body gives it. He crashes to the ground with a pained cry.

Bucky grabs him, stopping him from falling. He pulls Steve protectively to his chest, just like he used to.

Steve falls back against his chest, it’s comforting- He curls into him, letting out an angry bitter sob before he quiets himself. “Let’s just go to the kitchen.” He mumbles shakily.

Bucky nods and brings him to the kitchen, slowing to a stop and waiting for Steve to give him more orders.

Steve shakily grabs onto a chair, dropping himself into it with a pained grunt. He looks around the kitchen then to Bucky, frowning a bit. “Buck… are you going to do anything?”

Bucky tilts his head slowly. “Do you want anything else from me?”

Steve frowns and looks down at his shaking hands, everything’s just felt wrong since he woke up from the ice, since Bucky found him, Bucky doesn’t feel right. “We could eat?”

Bucky nods. “I can cook.” He waits for Steve to tell him what to cook. He… he doesn’t know why exactly he deserted when he heard Steve was back… he just showed up one day. Caring for Steve is his sole mission.

Steve rubs his forehead weakly, his mind is so foggy half the time he struggles, struggles to figure out how Bucky got to him, or how to help Bucky. “Soup?” He clenches his jaw, leaning back in his seat.

Bucky nods and goes to prepare some soup, grabbing at random from the soup cans in the cupboard. He starts cooking, his movements mechanical.

Steve watches through foggy eyes, he blinks a few times. “Bucky?” He sits up a bit, looking confused. “Bucky where are we? Are you okay?” He presses a hand to his face.

Bucky glances over his shoulder, smiling blankly. “We’re safe… I’m keeping you safe.” In reality, they’re in a safe house. Bucky… technically kidnapped Steve from Shield Headquarters…

“Oh…” Steve rubs at his head, sometimes his head gets so fuzzy… he can’t remember things. “Where’d everyone go?” He presses his head into the table, taking a few deep breaths. “I can’t remember Buck… What’s wrong with me?”

Bucky growls quietly under his breath, tilting his head at Steve. “It’s just us here… only us…” he walks over, putting a hand on his shoulder. “There’s nothing wrong with us!”

Steve startles but nods, he can’t remember anymore, wasn’t he with other people before?. “Okay…” He shakily tries to get to his feet, he flops back into his chair, wincing and tipping his head back. “Fuck- Bucky help me?” He holds up his arms.

Bucky grabs Steve’s arms, frowning. “What’s wrong? What do I need to do?”

“I want to sit in the living room, and I need to change, and… and I don’t know where I am-” Steve says it all in a rush, barely able to keep himself standing.

Bucky growls and clutches his head, trying to make sense of all of that. Too many orders in quick succession… he hisses and shakes his head. “We eat first. Then you can change.”

Steve nervously reaches out, trying to soothe Bucky. “It’s okay! I’m sorry, I’m sorry-” Steve nods and stumbles back, landing hard in the chair, he tucks his head down.

Bucky nods when Steve accepts that, then goes back to the soup. Once it’s done he gets two bowls, and hands the significantly larger portion to Steve.

Steve takes the bowl and practically drops it onto the table in front of him, he lets out an incredibly frustrated breath. Steve’s hand shakes violently as be reached for the soon, trying to hold it, his movements clumsy.

Bucky frowns, watching Steve try to eat for a few moments, then moves over to help Steve. It’s… fine. Bucky doesn’t need to eat. Steve is much more important.

Steve frowns when Bucky moves to help him, he hates it but he can’t do it himself. He drops the spoon down angrily, frustrated tears pricking at his eyes.

Bucky doesn’t comment as he starts to help Steve eat. No snarky comment or reassurance. Just… eerie silence and a blank look.

Steve eats a few bites from Bucky before he lets out an angry sound. “I hate this- I fucking hate this!” He grabs the spoon, trying to use it, hands clumsy and useless.

Bucky tilts his head, but doesn’t say anything. He keeps feeding Steve, careful to make sure he doesn’t hurt Steve at all while he does.

Steve eventually gently pushes Bucky’s hand away. “Thanks…” He mumbles, eyes sad. Something feels so wrong with Bucky- “Can we go for a walk today? Outside?” He hasn’t been outside since he got here- to risky, even if it’s a safe house he might be spotted.

Bucky blinks, then scowls. “No! It’s not safe!” He raises his voice a bit. Bucky would never do that…

Steve startles back. “Bucky!” He tucks into himself a bit, struggling to get out of his chair. “Why’re you yelling at me? I want to go outside!”

Bucky grabs his shoulder, not letting him get up. “If you go outside they could find you! If they do they’ll take you away again!”

Peter's been dead for five years, along with half the universe. He was brought back mere hours ago, and now they're getting back to the tower. Tony's in critical condition, and Natasha's dead at the bottom of a cliff, and Peter hasn't been able to account for his whole family yet, and everything just feels broken.

He hadn't wanted to leave Tony alone when the doctors took him. He's not even out of his suit yet besides his mask, and he hasn't been checked out by anyone, but he's not able to focus on that right now. He winds up practically crashing into a loved one—the first person he sees—and wordlessly hugging them with his strength barely contained.

Bucky startles, then hugs Peter back tightly. “Hey kid…” he mumbles, sounding lost and confused. He hasn’t really had a moment’s rest… first he was fighting to stop Thanos, then he was gone…? Then right back to fighting, and now Tony’s dying—

"Hi..." Peter mumbles back, blinking at tears. "You're— are you okay? Dad, he's, he's—." He swallows, not able to finish his sentence, and hugs Bucky tighter.

Bucky nods quickly, even if it’s obvious he’s barely keeping himself together. “Tony’s gonna get better—“ he stammers, even though there’s little hope in voice.

I’m so nauseas, fuck it’s weird- haven’t felt this nauseas since the serum… anyone have anything?

I can be right there, love… what’s going on?

I don’t know, I’m so nauseas Buck, I don’t know why-

I’m on my way. We’ll figure it out.

A few moments later Bucky walks in, gently pulling Steve into his arms. “Hey… what do you need?”

Winter has slowly been getting better since the Green Goblin… everything. He was still blaming himself for all of it, but he was getting better! Except Bucky still wasn’t coming back… even with Sienna going into their mind, trying to draw him out… Winter has yet to hear a word from him.

So Winter was currently in the lab, a handful of screens up as he watches old war footage of Bucky and Steve. He doesn’t know what else to try at this point. He doesn’t notice when someone enters the lab.

Emilia knocks softly on the door, wanting to check in on Winter and make sure he’s doing ok after everything “hey… can I come in?”

Winter looks over, pausing the footage. “… yeah… if you want.”

She smiles softly, walking over and tucking herself under her father’s arm for comfort “whatcha watching?” She finally notices the screens, trying not to worry too much about what he seems to be watching

Winter wraps his arm around her instantly. “… old war footage. Steve and Bucky, before… I existed.”

“Is that…. Do you think it’s a good idea to-“ she doesn’t know if this is healthy for him, to be going over this stuff

Winter frowns. “I don’t know… it doesn’t seem to be helping.”

“At all?… does it make you feel worse or just… nothing… neutral…”

Winter shrugs. “Sad, maybe. Bucky doesn’t smile like that anymore.”

“… he looked so young…. Like such a dork” she teases, hoping to lighten the mood

Winter chuckles, eyes glazing over slightly. “I wasn’t a dork…”

She giggles, not noticing anything but his chuckle “you totally were!!”

“I was not—“ he argues, tilting his head slightly. Where is he…?

“You’re smiling like a dork!” She teases again, pointing to Bucky on the screen

Bucky shakes his head. “I… Emilia…?” He looks to her, utterly baffled.

“Yeah?” She looks at him, and finally sees Bucky “oh my god Bucky?” She hugs him tight, burying her face in his chest

Bucky startles, then hugs her back tightly. “I… it hurts… my head…”

“Sorry” she steps back before leading him to a seat “here, just rest, you’re ok”

Bucky nods slowly. “… yeah… okay…” he sits down, pulling her down with him so he can lean against her.

Steve’s been worried. He’s been trying to help without making it seem like he doesn’t want Winter. He shifts into the lab, glancing at the screen briefly before he walks up behind Winter, wrapping his arms around his waist from behind. “What’re you doing love?”

Winter flinches and almost shoves Steve away before he realizes who it is. He frowns and pauses the footage. “… I’m trying to draw Bucky out…”

Steve rests his chin on Winter’s shoulder, looking at the video, he kisses Winter’s neck briefly. “I don’t think that’s going to work honey.”

Winter frowns. “Why not? You’re what’s drawn him out before…”

“Well you’re trying to force it…” Steve reaches up and massages one of his shoulders gently.

“… I don’t know how else to get him out…” he sighs and leans into Steve’s hand.

“Let me help yeah?” Steve shifts and gently sits Winter down on a bench.

Winter nods and sits down. “… I love you… I’m sorry I’m here instead of him. I know you’d rather it be him…”

“I love you too.” Steve shifts and runs a hand through Winter’s hair, frowning. “What makes you say that, that’s not true.”

Winter frowns. “… I don’t know… I just worry that you don’t love me…”

“Oh Winter… no, I love you so much.” He kisses his cheek.

Winter whines quietly. “… but Bucky’s better than me in every way! It doesn’t make sense… I did this to him!”

“No he’s not.” Steve shakes his head. “Honey… no you didn’t. You didn’t do this. Was I myself when I had the serum?”

Winter frowns. “… no… even before the serum I was locking him away… the serum just allowed me to get rid of him completely—“

“How so? Bucky was fully here before it Winter… you’re not a monster, you’re trying to get him back… that proves so much how you feel about him.” Steve cups his jaw gently.

“I wasn’t letting him out. Fighting him all the time because I wanted N— the Goblin’s love. He didn’t deserve it—“ he leans into Steve’s hand desperately.

“Okay…” Steve says carefully, stroking Winter’s cheek. “I think you might be remembering things a little foggy love… the serum affected you horribly.”

Winter bites his lip. “… I don’t think it is…” he pulls away, not willing to look at Steve. “… I still want the Goblin back…”

Steve pulls him back, cupping his jaw so Winter has to look at him. “Maybe that’s because you didn’t have to think when you were with the Goblin… you want that back?”

Winter hesitates, then nods slowly. “… yes… I… I didn’t want to be human…”

“Okay that’s understandable…” Steve shifts and tucks Winter into the side. “Maybe we can find a way for you to turn your mind off, in a safe way. And get Bucky back… but you can still just let someone else have control for a bit? Someone like… me?” He tilts his head. “In a safe way.”

Winter blinks. “… like… regression…? V and I found that a while ago… it seems similar.” He nods quickly. “… with you. Or Tony. Probably… not Norman… not yet.”

Steve nods. “That’s a way yes, regression. Tony and I have a thing we do, when I can’t take being in control anymore, he takes over for me” Steve shifts and rests a hand on Winter’s shoulder. “We can try regression, I think you could use the relief of not having to be in control… and that might help Bucky come back too…”

Winter nods. “That… might help, yeah!” He sighs and leans against Steve. “Can we do that now…?”

“Of course we can love, how do you want to do it?” Steve pushes Winter’s hair back.

Winter thinks for a moment, then presses further against Steve. “… give me a mission…” he mumbles after a while.

Steve wraps an arm firmly around Winter, rubbing his back firmly. “A mission?” He raises an eyebrow, studying him. “Something small and good?”

Winter hums, then nods. “Yeah… I don’t wanna hurt anyone…” he’s already slipping just thinking about it.

“I won’t let you hurt anyone.” Steve pushes his hair back firmly. “Go make tea, then come back with a pillow, blanket, and some massage oil.” He says firmly but gently.

Winter nods, eyes glazing over as he gets up. He goes to make the tea, and comes back to Steve with it and the other items he requested. He seems… calmer.

Steve smiles softly, glad to see him calmer, not entirely sure he should be doing this, but if it’s helping… “Good job.” Steve praises, taking the items and patting the spot in front of him. “Sit down and take off your shirt yeah? Just relax… I’m going to give you a nice massage.”

Winter nods and sits down, taking off his shirt quickly. “… affirmative, sir…” he says, voice blank.

Steve bites his lip. “Love… do you feel good or just… blank?” He gently starts to massage his shoulders. “I want you to relax and focus just on me okay?”

Winter shudders and leans eagerly into his hands. He lets out a pleased noise. “… feels good… having a mission again…”

Steve relaxes at the pleased sound. He digs his hand gently into his muscles. “Good, good missions that don’t hurt anyone yeah? Just from me and Tony…”

Winter relaxes further. “Mhm… Just you and handler Stark… and… Osborn…” he says the last part a bit quieter.

Steve smiles then frowns, kissing the top of Winter’s head. “Maybe Osborn, you have to be careful alright? I want you to come to me if he asks to do this yeah?”

Winter frowns. “… why…? Are you my main handler?” He tilts his head slightly. That doesn’t make sense… the three of them all feel equal in his head. If anything Norman should be his main handler…?

“Because sometimes Norman has a hard time mentally… and it could hurt him to do that for you.” Steve says oh so gently, he runs his hands through his hair then back down to his shoulders, massaging again.

Winter nods slowly. “… affirmative, sir…” he mumbles, trying not to think too hard about that. He’s supposed to be good and not think.

“Thank you… now can you focus on me honey?” Steve leans down and kisses his cheek.

Winter nods, leaning back into the kiss. After a moment, he gently kisses Steve. He’s not entirely sure why.

Steve smiles gently and kisses him incredibly soft before playing with his hair. “Tell me how your muscles feel.” He mumbles as he smooths his hand down his back.

Winter hums happily. “… good… my head feels all fuzzy too…” he frowns as something flickers in his eyes, barely noticeable.

Steve loves the happy hum. “Good fuzzy?” He tilts his head at the flicker. “What was that love?” He presses another kiss to the top of his head.

“Mhm…” he tilts his head. “… the soldier is operational—“ he says mechanically, not wanting Steve to worry about him.

“Winter… don’t hide it from me. tell me please.” Steve tips his head back gently, looking into his eyes. “You won’t be in trouble, telling me is good.”

Winter whines quietly. “… it feels like someone else is in my head—“

“Oh-” Steve rubs his head gently “that’s okay… just relax, relax you’ll feel better… they’ll come through and it’ll feel better.”

Winter shakes his head. “No! No, he makes me a bad asset! I’ll be punished!” He’s starting to panic a bit—

“Hey, hey-” Steve gently catches Winter, looking into his eyes. “No you won’t, you’re not an actual asset anymore, remember we’re just doing this to help you relax, and you’re doing so good, you’re so good. He doesn’t make you bad… you’re both so good, good together.”

Winter gasps, then nods slowly. Good… he’s being good… not a real asset anymore… it just feels good to pretend. He starts to calm down. “… together…?”

Steve nods and kisses his forehead, glad he’s calming down. “This is just to help you, you’re a free man… this is just to help you.” He nods and smiles softly. “Together.”

Winter nods slowly, then pulls him into another kiss. A few seconds into it, he gasps and pushes further into it.

Steve gasps in surprise, he kisses him back for a long moment, before pulling back. “Hey… you okay?”

Winter Bucky? pulls back, eyes wide. “S-Stevie…” he sounds so utterly confused.

“Hey… it’s okay, breathe… we’re going to figure this out.” Steve brushes their hair back, so heartbroken for him.

They nod slowly, leaning into his hand. “I don’t— we don’t—“ they stammer over whether to call themselves I or we for a few moments before ultimately giving up. “Hurts—“

“Shh… breathe.” Steve says firmly, he shifts and tugs them up into his lap, wrapping his arms around him firmly. “I’m sorry, we’re going to fix this, get you two separated again…”

They nod and press as close to him as they possibly can. Hes safe. Hes going to fix this. “… love you…”

Steve hugs him to his chest. “I love you both so much… okay, I’m going to draw Bucky out fully. The I’ll draw Winter out fully, okay?”

“… how…?” They look up at him with wide, teary eyes. All they want to do is hide away, preferably in his arms.

“I’m not entirely sure… but I’m going to try, so you can have some peace.” Steve brushes under his eye. “It’s okay…”

They lean against his hand like a touch starved dog. “… Stevie…” he whines, gritting his teeth as more pain digs into his head.

“I know…” Steve whispers, hating seeing him pained. “Bucky, tell me two things only you would know that we used to do in the past.”

They tilt their head slightly, thinking. “You… you once slept over at my house for a weekend because your Ma was sick… we hid you from my Pa the whole time because he was mad at you for dragging me into fights…” he cracks a tiny smile. “Becks almost gave it all up… he would’ve killed us…”

“Yeah… yeahs that’s right, I remember that.” Steve smiles and runs his hands through his hair. “And what story did you tell me about that day when I was getting really fidgety?”

Bucky tilts his head, trying to think. “I… I can’t remember…” he says, sounding scared. Terrified even.

“That’s okay.” Steve quickly reassures him, gently tucking Bucky’s hair out of his face. “That’s okay. What was your favorite drink or food back then?” He kisses Bucky’s forehead.

Bucky chases his touch. “I don’t— I don’t know!” He whines and buries his face in Steve’s shoulder.

Steve frowns, heart aching. He quickly gathers Bucky into his arms, rocking him back and forth gently. “Hey, hey- it’s okay, it’s okay… I’m here love… it’s okay.”

Bucky clings to him, hands shaking. Soon enough he collapses completely, unconscious suddenly.

Steve gasps. “Bucky?!” He gently shakes his shoulder. “Bucky-“

He doesn’t move. Not even a twitch.

Steve panics, gently slapping his cheek. “Bucky! Winter?!”

Winter gasps awake, shoving Steve away. “Where am I—?” He stammers, looking so confused.

“Winter- oh thank god!” Steve doesn’t even think about the shove. “You’re home. Safe.”

Winter nods slowly, taking a few deep breaths. “… Bucky—“ he gasps, grabbing onto Steve. “Did you talk to him?”

Steve grabs onto Winter, pressing his forehead to his. “Yeah I did- are you okay? Winter…” Steve clings to him.

Winter nods slowly, thinking for a moment. “… I think so… giving up control was… really nice.”

Steve holds him close. “Yeah? You passed out pretty badly…”

Winter frowns. “… I don’t remember that… I was being a good asset… then I think I fought Bucky. That’s where things get fuzzy…”

Steve nods slowly. “Okay… can you tell me why you fought him?” Steve brushes Winter’s hair back.

Winter frowns. “… he makes me a bad asset…” he mumbles, turning away. “I wasn’t thinking straight…”

Steve shifts so he’s still sitting in front of Winter. “Maybe not… but you remember you’re not an asset anymore right?”

Winter nods. “I know! I know I’m not… it just… it felt so much like when he’d try to surface in Hydra… when I was told constantly to not acknowledge him—“

“Take a breath love… I’m not angry.” Steve says gently. “Okay… maybe we need to re-word a few things if I do that with you again, find a way for it to feel different then it did in Hudr?”

Winter nods. “… maybe I need to call you something other than handler…” he doesn’t know exactly what else would work.

Steve nods in agreement. “I think that’s a good idea.” He tilts his head as he thinks. “Well… there’s sir, or Captain, or… anything else you can think of.”

Winter nods along, thinking. “… I think Captain might work… we can try that next time.”

Steve nods and kisses his cheek gently. “We’ll do that then… you did good…”

Winter hums and gently kisses Steve’s cheek in return. “I did? I wasn’t… I don’t know, annoying? Clingy?”

Steve smiles softly, he gently pulls Winter into his lap. “You did. “Not annoying at all… you were perfect.”

Winter nods. “… you’re sure? I was good?” He settles into Steve’s lap happily.

“So good, perfect.” Steve rests his hands gently on Witner’s hips.

Winter smiles and presses against Steve safety. “So good for you, my Captain…”

Steve smiles softly and tugs Winter gently closer. “That’s right… you’re so good for me.”

Winter nods. “I can be good again… so good… I love you!”

“I love you so much, you’re so good.” Steve kisses him gently.

Winter relaxes completely against Steve, lost in his head. “My Captain… ‘m so good…”

Steve curls him against his chest, cuddling him close. “You are… so perfect and good.”

Winter nods. “Captain…” he likes that a lot, calling Steve that. It feels more right than handler.

Steve plays with his hair gently, rocking him back and forth. “Your Captain.” He promises, kissing the top of his head.

Winter smiles contently. This is nice… really nice. He wouldn’t mind always being like this.

Steve hums softly, he gentle smile on his face, glad he can help Winter like this, he cards his fingers through his hair. “We should probably get up now.”

Winter frowns. “I don’t want to…” he mumbles, eyes hazy.”

Steve tilts his chin up gently. “I know… but you’ve been so good for me, you need to come up a little now okay? We can go up to the kitchen.”

Winter nods and stands up slowly, following Steve to the kitchen. He’s still out of it. He doesn’t really want to be aware right now.

Steve has him sit at the table. “Here…” Steve quickly makes two mugs of tea, setting one down in front of Winter. “Why don’t we watch a movie and you can relax, and slowly come back to yourself.”

Winter takes the mug and takes a small sip. “… but I like it like this…” He tilts his head.

“I know love, but you can’t stay like this forever… we have to take breaks from it.” Steve brushes Winter’s hair back.

Winter frowns. “No we don’t…” he whines, pressing against steve’s hands.

“Winter…” Steve gently plays with his hair. “One more hour okay? We’ll watch a movie then I need you to take a break love.”

Winter nods. “… okay…” he curls into Steve’s side, still not liking the idea of coming back to himself.

“Thank you.” Steve gets them settled on the couch, handing Bucky his tea and turning on a movie.

Winter sips on the tea, not really paying attention to the movie at all. He cares more about being pressed as close to Steve as possible.

Steve plays idly with Winter’s hair as the movie plays, worried. How does he get Winter to want to come out of this state? “Hey, what do you want for dinner tomorrow love? We could eat out.” Maybe questions that Winter has to think about to answer?

Winter looks up blankly, tilting his head as he has to think. “… if that’s what you want…”

Steve meets Winter’s eyes. “We’ll do that then, a nice date, where do you want to eat?”

Winter frowns, eyes flickering. “… anything but rations…” Bucky mumbles, reaching for Steve.

Steve tilts his head and gently pulls him into his arms, is Bucky coming back…? “Of course not… do you want to go to the Italian place or the Thai place?”

Bucky scowls as he has to think. “… Thai…” he decides on, then leans heavily against Steve.

“Thai sounds good. Thank you for choosing.” Steve wraps one arm around Bucky.

Bucky nods weakly. “… mm… I love you…”

“Love you too…” Steve gently brushes his hair back.

Bucky leans into his hand, then gasps, grabbing at Steve. “Steve! You’re— what happened? How long has it been?”

Steve gasps and gently grabs him back. “Bucky! Oh Buck you’re okay! It’s been a while but you’re Kay-"

Bucky frowns, trying to think. “… Winter blocked me out…”

“I’m sorry love.” Steve gently cups his face.

Bucky leans into Steve’s hands. “… he never shuts me out anymore—“

Bucky frowns and winces as he’s kicked back, scrambling to stand up. “Hey, woah— Steve?” He looks him over, eyes widening as he realizes Steve is… tiny again.

“Get away!” Steve flings a pillow at him, scrambling and falling off the bed, something is very wrong. “Who are you?!” He throws another pillow at him, breathing quickly.

Bucky barely notices the pillows. He frowns and puts his hands up. “Hey, woah. It’s Bucky. I’m Bucky—“ Alpine watches Steve with worry and Liho presses against her side.

“Bucky?!” Steve sits up, flinging back onto the wall, wincing as his back collides with it. “Why do you look like that? Why are we in the same bed here- where am I?!”

Bucky moves over, eyes wide. “Hey, woah. We’re at our place. We… what year do you think this is?”

“It’s 1939!” Steve yells in a panic, he slams his head back into the wall. “Who are you- you don’t look right!”

Steve frantically grabs at Bucky’s hands, trying to shove them off. “Stop lying! You’re insane-" He looks around frantically. “You- no, no you’d- no!”

Steve gasps and looks into his eyes, his hands clinging onto Bucky’s. “How… how do you know that?” He whispers, shaking. “Where am I? Bucky- I… I don’t know where I am-”

Bucky grabs Steve’s wrist with his metal hand. “I’m not pranking you! Look at me, Steve! I’m way older than I was when I saw you last, right?”

Steve lets out a choked scream when the metal hand grabs him. He stares at it with wide eyes, his eyes flick up to Bucky’s face. “Yeah- what’s happening… Bucky what’s happening?!”

Madra whines and stumbles back. Bucky grabs his hands. “Fuck! I… I might have an inhaler somewhere—“

Might- Bucky always has one, maybe this isn’t his Bucky- Steve kicks Bucky hard and makes a dash for the door.

Bucky winces and stumbles back. “Steve wait! There’s one in my bathroom, I think! Just— please stay!”

Bucky reaches out to help cover Steve’s ears. “Just come back inside… please.”

Steve cries out and nods, falling back against Bucky’s chest, his own stuttering.

Bucky pulls him close and guides him back inside. “… sit down. I’ll explain any questions you have.”

“What’s happening?” Steve whispers, shakily sitting down on the couch.

Bucky sits down with him. “I think… you and my Steve swapped places… because he was with me up until you showed up.”

Steve frowns and runs his hands down his face, breathing heavily. “I… we’re alive still?” He shifts and looks at Bucky. “You’re not my Bucky-“

Bucky nods quickly. “I’ll try my best to get you home, love. It just might take a while.” He doesn’t notice the pet name slipped.

Steve looks up sharply, eyes narrowing. “What did you just call me?” He shifts back, shoulders tensing up.

Bucky blinks, confused. “What? What did I say?” He didn’t even realizes he said that… it’s just so natural to him.

“You called me love.” Steve frowns and shifts further back, his eyes flicking over Bucky quickly. “You can’t call me that-”

Bucky blinks. “I— Steve, it’s okay. Gay marriage is legal now. Some people are still dicks about it, but…” he holds out his hand, showing off his wedding ring.

Bucky looks down at his ring, then looks to Steve with a soft smile. “I married you, Steve. I always wanted to.”

Steve blinks rapidly, a looks of disbelief coming over his face. “You… you married me?” He whisper, a few tears pricking at his eyes.

Bucky nods. “I did, darling.” He reaches over to cup Steve’s face. “… because I love you. I always have.”

Steve startles at Bucky’s touch, he slowly leans into it. “So have I…” He whispers, looking terrified. He looks down, tears in his eyes. “We can actually… be married?”

Bucks nods, gently wiping his tears. “We’ve been married for a couple months now…” he hums, debating whether or not to tell Steve about the twins.

Bucky nods. “Yeah, they are. I mean, some people fucking suck, but… it’s fine. Their opinions don’t matter.”

Steve smiles and ducks his head down, face flushing a soft pink for a moment before he shakes his head. “Good… that’s um… good.” He glances Bucky over. “I got you…”

Bucky smiles. “Yeah, you got me…” he sighs and looks Steve over. Is it odd that he kinda missed when Steve was smaller than him? When Steve fit in his arms perfectly?

Bucky shrugs. “I’m not entirely sure… just try to figure out how to get you home.”

Bucky frowns. “I mean… if you really want. But.. no. My past self needs you, Stevie. He always needed you.”

“Right… sorry. Can’t stay here.” Steve looks down, wrapping an arm around his stomach. “Yeah… you’re hopeless without me.” He teases, a small grin coming into his face.

Bucky frowns, reaching out to take his hand. “Yeah… I know… absolutely hopeless without my Stevie beside me…”

Steve smiles and squeezes his hand shakily. “Yeah… you need me jerk.” He shifts and hugs his stomach, taking a few slow breaths.

Bucky nods, then looks Steve up and down. “Shit! Are you hungry? I’ll get you food—“

Steve blinks and shakes his head. “Relax Buck… some food would be nice, but we can wait, I don’t want to waste food.”

Bucky shakes his head. “We have food now, love. Money’s not an issue anymore.”

Steve blinks in surprise. “We do?” He shifts back and presses a hand to his stomach, biting his lip.

“We do.” He gets up, gently guiding Steve to the kitchen with him. “Why don’t I just make some pasta? That’ll be quick.”

“Can we really afford that?” Steve scrunches his nose up, he trips over his feet a bit, biting the inside of his cheek hard.

Bucky nods. “We can… I promise.” He grabs stuff from the cupboard and starts cooking.

Steve watches with a soft expression. He shifts and sits on a chair in the kitchen, leaning his head heavily on the table.

Bucky watches him out of the corner of his eye, sighing softly. Alpine hops onto the table, looking at Steve. “I didn’t think you used to be this small…” she tilts her head.

Steve turns and stares at Alpine with complete shock, he lets out a sharp scream and flings a glass off the table at Alpine. “Possessed cat! Bucky! The cat is talking-”

Steve stands quickly, mumbling prayers under his breath as he stares at Alpine. “What do you mean she can just do that! Cats don’t talk Buck-” Steve shifts towards the door.

“I promise. I’m not lying to you.” He walks over, taking Steve’s hands. “… it’s alright. She’ll be a little grumpy for a while, but that’s nothing new.”

Steve nods slowly, he curls his hands around Bucky’s hands. “I called her a demon-” He shifts and hugs Bucky tightly. “Buck- I’m so overwhelmed-”

Bucky shakes his head. “I’m sure she’s been called worse.” He startles, then hugs Steve back tightly. “… I know you are.”

Steve hugs him tightly, he fits into Bucky’s arms perfect. “I’m sorry- it’s so much…” He closes his eyes.

Bucky holds him close, shocked at how well he fits. He’d almost forgotten… “I know it’s a lot… I understand, really.”

Steve buries his face into Bucky’s chest, hes so familiar. He takes a few shaky breaths, he hides in Bucky’s arms.

Bucky hums and scoops him up, holding him with one arm as he finishes the food. “… I’m gonna have to put you down for us to eat…”

“You can still carry me.” Steve smiles softly at that, he nods and tips his head against Bucky’s shoulder.

Bucky smiles. “Oh… fine…” he gets two plates set up, then slowly sets Steve on a chair. “I’ll hold you after.”

Steve beams up at Bucky. “I’ve still got you wrapped around my finger.” He laughs and takes a small bite of food.

Bucky laughs. “What?? No you don’t!” He gives him a playful shove, harder than he meant to. He’s not used to Steve’s lack of strength without the serum.

“Yeah I do-” Steve cuts himself off with a sharp cry as he stumbles to the ground, falling out of his chair, he bites his lip and grabs his ribs.

Bucky gasps and scrambles over, reaching for him. “Fuck— I’m sorry! I didn’t— I didn’t mean to—“

“It’s okay!” Steve holds his hands out, grabbing onto Bucky and sitting up. “I know you didn’t mean to.” He winces and shakes his head. “It’s okay.”

Bucky shakes his head. “It’s not okay— I hurt you.” He pulls Steve into a hug.

“Barely- Buck you just shoved me a little.” Steve melts into the hug, fitting into his arms perfectly.

Buck buries his face in Steve’s hair. “I pushed you off a chair!”

“On accident Buck!” Steve hugs him tightly, snuggling down into Bucky’s chest happily.

Bucky sighs. “Yeah… but still…” he shakes his head. “Why don’t we finish eating, love…? You need to get some meat on your bones.”

Steve nods and gets up into the chair. “You know I’m always stick thin.” He smiles weakly and starts to eat.

“And I need to fix that!” He grins and pokes Steve’s ribs, gentler this time.

Steve laughs and shoves Bucky’s shoulder. He munches on the food with a small smile. “Hey Buck… can I… can I kiss you…?”

Bucky blinks, then nods. “… if that’s what you really want, then yeah.”

“I want to know what it’s like… I’ve always wanted to kiss you.” He whispers with a shy smile.

Bucky smiles. “Yeah? I always wanted to kiss you too.” He leans over, but lets Steve make the final decision if they kiss or not.

Steve lets out a shaky breath before he presses his lips firmly to Bucky’s, shakily resting his hands on his shoulders.

Bucky waits a moment, then slowly kisses back. His hands slip down to Steve’s hips, holding him gently.

Steve startles at the touch but leans into it. He lets out a soft breath, pulling back from the kiss. “I kissed you…”

Bucky smiles. “Yeah, you did. How’d it feel, love?” He pulls Steve closer.

“Good… but like I’m going to hell.” Steve whispers. He blinks and looks away, mumbling a prayer.

Bucky’s face immediately falls. “You’re not going to hell, Steve. You’re not.”

Steve frowns and sits back. “Yes I am.” He shakes his head, going back to mumbling prayers to himself.

Bucky shakes his head. “No you’re not. Not for this. Loving men isn’t a sin.”

Bucky frowns. “No, no it’s not wrong—“ he grabs Steve’s wrist. “Because I love you! I always have, since the day we met!”

“Yes it is!” Steve tries to get his wrists back but gives up, his hands shaking in Bucky’s. “So have I and I hate it! I hate that I love you!” He gasps out, chest heaving.

Bucky shakes his head, gently pulling Steve’s hand to his lips, gently kissing his knuckles. “… I felt that way for so long… it’s not a sin.”

“It is…” Steve whispers shakily, he watches Bucky kiss his knuckles. “I love you- I love you I’m sorry- I’m broken…”

Bucky shakes his head. “You’re not broken. You’re anything but broken, my love.”

“How are we not broken? We’re wrong.” Steve shudders and shifts, grabbing onto Bucky, hiding against his chest.

Bucky shakes his head. “… even if my love for you was wrong… I’d still choose it every time… it’s worth it, loving you. You’re my everything, Stevie.”

Steve keeps his face pressed into Bucky’s chest, hiding his tears. “And I’d choose you.” He whispers shakily. “I’m terrified to love you…”

Bucky nods and gently kisses Steve’s head. “… I know you are. It’s going to work out, I swear… we… we have kids…”

“I love you, every day I’ve loved you.” Steve lifts his head, quickly wiping away tears. “Kids?” He scrunches up his nose confused. “How?”

“Some magic…” he shakes his head with an amused grin. “You wanna meet them?”

Steve nods shakily, looking so confused. “Yeah… yeah okay…”

Bucky nods, putting a gentle hand on Steve’s shoulder. “Yeah, after your Ma… Sarah Winifred and Maria Rebecca.”

Sarah reaches for him with wide eyes. “Papa!”

Bucky leans into his hands. “Look at me! I’m okay, really! I was just… gone for a few years—“ except he’s clearly scarred, physically and emotionally and mentally. His eyes are so dull.

Bucky crouches down in front of him, hands up. “There’s nothing you could’ve done! I know if you were able to you would’ve saved me.”

Steve tips his head back, breathing choppy and uneven. “Stop lying to me- stop lying to me!” He presses a hand to his chest. “I would’ve saved you! Why didn’t I?!”

Bucky shakes his head. “You tried! You really tried! If you had you would’ve fallen with me! We would’ve both been captured!”

“Fallen?! Captured-“ Steve shakes his head, starting to look utterly overwhelmed. “No, no- no-”

Bucky grabs his hands gently. “It’s okay… Steve, if I hadn’t had fallen… we wouldn’t have gotten together after.”

Steve clings to his hands, tears in his eyes, panic coursing through him, his Bucky- no! Steve’s chest heaves. “It’s okay?”

Bucks nods. “I promise you, it’s okay. Just take a moment to breathe, okay?”

Steve takes a few slow shaky breath, nodding jerkily. “You’re safe?” He gasps out, horror in his eyes.

Bucky nods. “I’m safe. I’m really safe.” He pulls Steve closer.

Steve shifts and flings his arms around Bucky, melting into him. “I’m sorry.” He whispers, a moment later his body tenses up, Steve lets out a pained sound, grabbing at his head.

Bucky scoops him up, pulling Steve close. “Hey, woah— it’s okay… what is it, love? What hurts?”

“My head- Bucky my head!” Steve cries out, clutching at his head.

“Just hang on, okay? I’ll get you some pain killers—“ he carries Steve to the bathroom, digging for non-super Soldier pain killers.

Steve curls into himself, breathing heavy and pained. “Feels like it’s on fire Bucky!” Steve bites his lip hard, the pain feels new-

Bucky grabs him some pain killers finally and puts them in his mouth. “I need you to swallow, love.”

Steve gags but swallows the pills, one hand still pressed to his forehead. “Buck- this is new… new pain-” He claws at his head, he feels wrong-

Bucky nods and carries him to bed, hoping lying down will help. “I’ll stay with you through all of it, darling.”

“My head-” Steve gasps and curls up in the bed. “Bucky it feels like it’s going to explode-“

Bucky curls up with him. “Focus on my voice. Can you do that?”

Steve nods shakily. “Yeah-” He chokes out, pressing his hands to his forehead.

Bucky gently kisses his cheek. “Okay… I’ve got you. I’ll always take care of you, love.”

“You do-” Steve curls into Bucky, hiding down in his chest, he fits perfect. His head feels like it’s killing him-

Bucky wishes he could do more. He doesn’t know what’s happening and that scares him—

Steve breathes carefully as he lays against Bucky, starting to fall asleep. His body not reacting well… breaking down a hit from being in the future.

Bucky holds him close, like he’s the most precious thing in the world. He is, really.

Steve slowly drifts to sleep, tucked up incredibly close to Bucky, feeling safe in his arms.

Bucky follows him to sleep not too long after. Curling up around Steve feels so natural.

Eventually morning comes, Steve’s still asleep when Bucky wakes up, just like in the past. Steve snuggles further against Bucky.

Bucky smiles blankly, pulling Steve closer. He doesn’t… exactly realize this isn’t the past. This feels so right…

Steve smiles and cuddles into Bucky. “Feel better.” He mumbles, happily tucking himself into Bucky’s chest. This feels like home…

Bucky nods. “That’s good…” he hums and gently kisses Steve’s head.

Steve melts at the kiss, home. He shuffles further against Bucky.

Bucky smiles, then looks around blankly. “… this isn’t our place… where are we…?”

Steve blinks and glances around. “I’m in the… future.” Steve winces.

Bucky sits up, trying to make sense of this. “… you’re small again…” he frowns. “… you’re not my Steve.”

(AU rp. Steve basically needs help with functioning/doing regular things)

When Steve was pulled from the ice something was wrong. He hit his head hard and slept for 70 years… things had gotten messed up in his mind. Neurological problems along with a few other things.

Bucky nods slowly, then pulls Steve to sit up a bit better, leaving him against the headboard. “… you don’t seem fine.”

Steve glares for a moment before taking a few slow breaths. “I’m just struggling.” He bites his lip hard. “I’m fine.”

Bucky doesn’t even notice the glare. He never notices… he rests his hand over Steve’s. “… do you need anything? Food?”

Bucky nods. “Can you stand?” He stands up, gently guiding Steve up. “We can go for a walk.”

“Not really-” Steve groan in pain as Bucky helps him up, he holds onto him tightly, stumbling a bit. He hates this so much- he can’t even walk by himself!

Bucky frowns, then opts to carry Steve instead. He makes sure Steve is comfortable before pulling him into a bridal carry.

“Bucky-” Steve lets out an angry breath, lightly shoving at his chest, his hands feel weak. “Bucky I can walk!” He yells frustrated.

Bucky frowns, then sets him down, keeping an arm around him. He just… stares blankly.

“Sorry-” Steve whispers, shame filling his face. He frowns at the blankness coming from Bucky. Steve takes a small step and… his body gives it. He crashes to the ground with a pained cry.

Bucky grabs him, stopping him from falling. He pulls Steve protectively to his chest, just like he used to.

Steve falls back against his chest, it’s comforting- He curls into him, letting out an angry bitter sob before he quiets himself. “Let’s just go to the kitchen.” He mumbles shakily.

Bucky nods and brings him to the kitchen, slowing to a stop and waiting for Steve to give him more orders.

Steve shakily grabs onto a chair, dropping himself into it with a pained grunt. He looks around the kitchen then to Bucky, frowning a bit. “Buck… are you going to do anything?”

Bucky tilts his head slowly. “Do you want anything else from me?”

Steve frowns and looks down at his shaking hands, everything’s just felt wrong since he woke up from the ice, since Bucky found him, Bucky doesn’t feel right. “We could eat?”

Bucky nods and goes to prepare some soup, grabbing at random from the soup cans in the cupboard. He starts cooking, his movements mechanical.

Steve watches through foggy eyes, he blinks a few times. “Bucky?” He sits up a bit, looking confused. “Bucky where are we? Are you okay?” He presses a hand to his face.

Bucky glances over his shoulder, smiling blankly. “We’re safe… I’m keeping you safe.” In reality, they’re in a safe house. Bucky… technically kidnapped Steve from Shield Headquarters…

Bucky growls quietly under his breath, tilting his head at Steve. “It’s just us here… only us…” he walks over, putting a hand on his shoulder. “There’s nothing wrong with us!”

Bucky grabs Steve’s arms, frowning. “What’s wrong? What do I need to do?”

“I want to sit in the living room, and I need to change, and… and I don’t know where I am-” Steve says it all in a rush, barely able to keep himself standing.

Bucky growls and clutches his head, trying to make sense of all of that. Too many orders in quick succession… he hisses and shakes his head. “We eat first. Then you can change.”

Steve nervously reaches out, trying to soothe Bucky. “It’s okay! I’m sorry, I’m sorry-” Steve nods and stumbles back, landing hard in the chair, he tucks his head down.

Bucky nods when Steve accepts that, then goes back to the soup. Once it’s done he gets two bowls, and hands the significantly larger portion to Steve.

Bucky frowns, watching Steve try to eat for a few moments, then moves over to help Steve. It’s… fine. Bucky doesn’t need to eat. Steve is much more important.

Steve frowns when Bucky moves to help him, he hates it but he can’t do it himself. He drops the spoon down angrily, frustrated tears pricking at his eyes.

Bucky doesn’t comment as he starts to help Steve eat. No snarky comment or reassurance. Just… eerie silence and a blank look.

Steve eats a few bites from Bucky before he lets out an angry sound. “I hate this- I fucking hate this!” He grabs the spoon, trying to use it, hands clumsy and useless.

Bucky tilts his head, but doesn’t say anything. He keeps feeding Steve, careful to make sure he doesn’t hurt Steve at all while he does.

Bucky blinks, then scowls. “No! It’s not safe!” He raises his voice a bit. Bucky would never do that…

"Dad!" She calls out, stumbling into his arms. "You're here!"

Bucky shakes his head, giving her a stern dad glare back. “You look like shit. I’m getting you food.”

Valerie withers under the glare a little bit. "Fine," she says, crossing her arms over her chest. "Spoilsport."

Bucky sighs. “I know… I’m so horrible.” He leads her to the kitchen, making her sit down as he searches the fridge. “Is leftover Chinese okay?”
