Lemon tree panel complete!
This is one of my favourite designs and the third time I’ve made it now. I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out this time.
Pretty much all of my work is for commission, so I rarely get a chance to try out my own ideas and style. I’m not even sure what my style actually is! This was (originally) a design I had made specifically for an exhibition, so it gave me the opportunity to experiment and be myself.
That summer I had been doing a lot of quick continuous line sketching, and I think that really informed how I approached the painting for this one.
Glass painting is usually so very meticulous and carefully planned. The paint dries so quickly that it’s difficult to make amends to it. You can’t paint over the line you’ve just done without creating a potential blister. There’s generally a lot of fixing it up after it’s dried by scratching away any offending mistakes. Lots of neatening it up before it goes in the kiln. I love a bbq skewer.
But with this piece I tried to capture that rough quick movement. I wanted it to be spontaneous like my pencil sketches. It’s the same approach the third time round, and I love how each panel is unique because of it.
