Week 6: TeamGotSauce vs. Take THAT For Big Data
To close week 6, the stage was set for a heavyweight showdown as 2 teams that haven’t lost a game they’ve played, each with players that can put up big numbers on the scoreboard, took on each other in a game that would not disappoint. Take THAT for Big Data (2-3) had only lost because of forfeit took on the unbeaten TeamGotSauce (5-0). Scoring to kick off the game went back and forth as everything was working for both teams; by the halfway point in the first half, 40 points total were already on the scoreboard. Down low for TeamGotSauce, Sam Wagner held his own getting rebounds for his team and putting up 8 first half points. Sachin Monga could not miss from the field to open up the game, keeping his team in it with 17 points by halftime. As a whole, all of TeamGotSauce’s scoring in the first came from 3 players. For Data, Austin Liou had the shooter’s touch early nailing some impressive threes and scoring 10 points in the first. Jordan Mautner was busy at the free throw line pressuring the defense as well. To close the first, Eric Wang for Data hit a buzzer beater as the score was close at half with Data leading 35 to 29.
In the second the score continued to stay close as two of the league’s top team’s battled it out. Will Winston found his shot in the second and finished the game with 16 points. Data’s big man, Patrick Dreith, scored at will down low with multiple dunks in the second; Sauce did not have an answer for him and as a result began to get in foul trouble towards the end of the game. Ultimately, the combination of clutch free throws and too much scoring from Data is the difference maker, as Take THAT for Big Data hands TeamGotSauce their first loss of the season. Four players on Sauce end up in double figures in the losing performance: Monga with 19, Wagner and Winston with 16, & Ankur Sharma with 11. Dreith has another big game, doing most of the damage at the basket and at the free throw line, finishing with 34 points (6-7 FT). Liou (16 points) & Jordan Mautner (14) give enough support from the guard positions to solidify the victory as Data comes out on top 75 to 68.
In one of the most entertaining games of the year, both teams made their case as the best in the league and a rematch in the playoffs may be inevitable. Each team has several quality scorers so any opponent that has a shot at defeating them will need to put together a strong defensive strategy. TeamGotSauce is now 5-1 on the year and Take THAT For Big Data is now at 3-3, though all three losses have come from forfeits.
