I was lucky enough to meet Kurt Cobain in 1993. said “hi” to krist and dave.
several people have asked why I didn’t see them in concert more.
I did have tickets..for several shows, but either kurt canceled the show or the whole tour, no funds, or work.
I called in the day I DID see them, and caught hell for it. but I met kurt, and didn’t care.
the show was in Chicago, Aragon Ballroom, October 23rd, 1993.
the only time they played “you know You’re right”, and just an excellent show.
it’s said it was the best show on the tour.
had to borrow a car, as mine was junk. got lost, and was afraid I would miss the whole thing. (300 miles)
afterward, I was wandering around (okay, trying to sneak backstage) and got into what I thought was a meet and greet. tons of people, food and drink…..
and why not? not security that I saw, so I barged right in.
hung back by the door, in case of problems. figured krist or dave might show up, but never expected kurt. I heard he hated meet and greets.
chatting with a group of people, and in walks KURT COBAIN.
I really thought I would faint. I mean , I had followed him since 1989, but here he was ! very handsome, tiny. huge hands and feet. those eyes looked right through you. beautiful azure blue eyes.
so very smoothly, I say “HI" really loud. and he grinned (what a smile) and said “hi" right back. and walked over to this group of people I was standing with. AND STOOD next to me. OMG.
He was not comfortable with the situation. I don’t think groups of strangers was his thing at ALL. kept looking at his shoes. but he answered questions, and did talk. people asked about frances, (big smile here) he was so proud of her.
I did thank him for his music. (chuckle here) and a smirk.
no one fangirled or fanboyed…….most odd. but I wanted too!
krist and dave walked through, and dave cracked ” ladies and gentlemen, KURT COBAIN in the flesh" and kurt laughed. he had the best laugh.
and he stayed just a few minutes longer…..thanked us, and started walking in the direction of the eats…..then “damn, “ and walked back…..took some guitar picks out of his pocket, and handed them out. I got one. right out of HIS hands.
that man had huge hands, and calluses on those fingers.
I got out of there right away, as I certainly didn’t have clearance to be there.
I held the guitar pick all the way home. I am such a dork.
but the whole thing was puzzling. kurt attending a meet and greet? handing out guitar picks? not like him at all.
less than 6 months later, Kurt was gone.
fast forward to the 20th anniversary of In Utero. included in the deluxe set I got was a copy of a letter from management saying “there were going to be no meet and greets on the tour”
WHAT???? so what did I get into? the only answer I can come up with , was it was a private party. which makes sense in retrospect, as the eats and drinks looked rather upscale for the average meet and greet. and no wonder no one gushed and twaddled around kurt. only me. phineas, the party crasher.
but I met kurt. that’s all that mattered.
still have the pick. I keep it with Leland’s letters. they will go to the grand daughter (who loves kurt also).
