THE WALKING DEAD s6e16 The Last Day on Earth
I’m really not sure how I’ll get through this without some mild comic book spoilers but I’ll try and confine them to the end. Ok? Deep breath.
Negan. The big bad we’ve been waiting for. The boogieman that has been lurking about in the shadows this entire season. Really, TWD’s version of the devil incarnate... we knew he was going to show up but did he live up to his potential?
Not really. Because we never see the result of his carnage.
I’d read some spoilers that the season would end the way it did -- with the ultimate cliffhanger -- so I wasn’t surprised. But I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed. I’d would have much preferred to see the person who got Lucille’d and then spend the next 6 months raging and grieving the character. I think doing things the way they did felt cheap and insulting -- especially after the BULLSHIT they pulled with Glenn and the dumpster. It’s disappointing. I’m not disappointed in the story but in the way it was presented. Even in the comics, the last panel is the unrecognizable pulp of [spoiler]’s face. You’re left reeling from it. We get no satisfaction here.
Word of warning to the writers -- people will only put up with your shit so far.
There’s rumors going around that the writers etc haven’t even decided who was killed yet and want to gauge fan reaction before they make the final decision. I tend to think that’s bullshit. They know and they’re keeping it close to their chest. But on THE TALKING DEAD, Robert Kirkman said there are definitive clues as to who it is (and you can find those on the Youtubes).
I had nothing bad to say about Negan’s portrayal -- other than it’s a shame Americans are so ridiculous about profanity because I felt he was muzzled a bit by not being able to be his true profane, boisterous self. I hope they filmed a swear-laden version for the blu-ray. The biggest difference between Negan and say, the Governor is the joy. Negan is full of fucking joy. He kills with glee. Sure he rules with an iron fist but he’s pretty damned happy about it, in sharp contrast to the Governor's cold, calculating psychopathy. Negan is practical and capable of mercy but if he’s going to punish you, he will do it with a light heart and a smile on his face.
So we meet Negan and he’s scary and funny and well portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (excellent casting there -- UNLIKE the fucking Governor!). But we, the viewers, get no love from this storyline at all. We know they’re being herded from the very beginning. And it’s like shouting at a horror movie actress to NOT GO IN THE BASEMENT -- we see the inevitable. We also can see this as the ultimate price for Rick’s hubris. And we can see that The Saviors aren’t get a well-armed rag tag group -- but probably number in the hundreds. And if Rick hadn’t been so cocksure about their ability to take out baddies, maybe they’d have done some reconnaissance and figured that out beforehand.
Because that’s what this death is. Punishment for Rick. And his he deals with it, reacts to it shapes his character for the foreseeable future. Rick isn’t the type to live on his knees... but how long will he stay there and how he stands up are questions we’ll be answering for a long time to come.
Meanwhile, Morgan is on the hunt for Carol. He finds her but can’t convince her to go back to Alexandria. And in possibly the best moment in the entire episode (fuck, maybe the entire season) -- Morgan makes the decision to kill. And by killing the man who was slowly killing Carol, I think he saves both her and himself. I admit, I cheered and screams and almost ripped my husband’s arm out of its socket when he pulled the trigger. Maybe all life IS precious... some maybe some life is a bit more precious than others.
And in another moment that made me cheer with delight, we meet once again the man in body armor from last episode -- the one who was just looking for his horse at the barn and whom Morgan stopped Rick from killing. He shows up with another man and in perhaps the most unambiguous scene on TWD, we see that they are instantly trustworthy types. The good guys. The calvary has arrived. And they will save Carol and perhaps -- can show her that she doesn’t have to just survive or die -- but that she can live. There are now options for her that didn’t exist before.
And if the Negan scenes were demoralizing and frustrating -- the scenes with Carol and Morgan and these new people gave me hope.
Because the gods know we need it now more than ever.
COMICS SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!!!
-- The guys on horseback really ARE good guys. They’re from a group called The Kingdom and HOLY CRAP I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS SHIT. It’s going to be a lot of fun. In the comics, Michonne becomes romantically involved with the leader of the Kingdom but I’m thinking Carol will take her place now since Michonne’s with Rick (taking the place of Andrea in the comics).
-- Who died? I think it’s likely to still follow the comic. But let’s see.
It’s not Rick or Carl b/c Negan mentions that if Carl acts up to take his other eye and feed it to Rick. Nice.
Maggie? Why would they make Maggie deathly ill, only to kill her with a bat? It’s not Maggie.
Daryl? Same -- why shoot him, only to kill him in a slightly different way? IF Daryl ever dies, you know he’ll go out in a blaze of glory, saving someone. He won’t die like this.
Abraham? I think he may not be long for this world (Denise gets his death in the comics) but he’s a secondary character at best and his death would have little emotional impact.
Aaron? We’ve seen precious little of Aaron this season to the point where I forget he’s there. Which is a shame b/c I love the character. But nah, he’s far too minor to kill this way.
Michonne? Not a chance. She’s not just one of the main characters, but she has the plot-armor of being Rick’s main squeeze.
Eugene? Secondary character who, despite leaving cliffnotes, is needed in the upcoming battles.
Rosita? Who cares about Rosita? Not even Abraham.
Glenn. He swings... he hits... HOME RUN.
