when not to be poly

I see it, sometimes, when someone really WANTS to be poly. Maybe they think it’s the only ethical way to have relationships, or that it’s more progressive, or more evolved. Maybe they’re in love with someone who is poly. Perhaps all their friends, or their social group are, or there’s a strong overlap with a hobby they have and the poly community. 

Those are not good reasons to attempt polyamory. 

And when I see people coming to non-monogamy in this way, they’re so often desperately unhappy. To those people, I just want to say: there is nothing wrong with choosing monogamy. You’ve considered your options, and decided that having only one partner, who has only one partner, is the best choice for you. There’s nothing better about being poly if it makes you miserable. 

I’m poly because it makes sense for me and it makes me happy. Live the relationship style that makes you happy, not the one you think you’re supposed to have.
