What was the hardest thing for you to master on the ukulele -- fingering, strumming, or something else?

I'm still trying to master the strumming. It's hard to not mimic holding a pick when you play with your fingers. But some of it came very naturally like the riff in "Long As I Got You." Every time I picked up the uke, that melody got played.

Amy Lee, from Evanascence, has a solo album out... for kids.

Well all of the originals were totally inspired by my 2 year old son, Jack.  I was writing those songs before I knew I wanted to make an album just naturally, to connect with him.

“As for writing, I’m not sure if it’s easier now or harder.  I have much higher expectations of myself now that I’ve been doing it for so long, and sometimes that self-criticism really stifles my creativity. I used to just make up songs on my way to work as a pre-school music specialist so I would have new material for that day. Back to school season is in full swing, and the Bay Area's Alphabet Rockers have a brand-new video to help your favorite kindergartner slide back into life on the school playground....

Dan Vapid (he of Dan Vapid and the Cheats and Screeching Weasel fame) has a new kids album, his first, coming out in September.  The first single and video is for the leadoff track “Beep Beep Beep” features art from Gilbert Armendariz and is pretty great.  Less than 70 seconds long, watch it here.

If it sparks some imaginations I'll consider it a complete success.   Growing up, I loved cartoons and adventure stories.  I'd even say I needed them.  I would think about a thrilling scene or a plot twist or a cliffhanger-ending long after the episode was over.  And if Eleanor can generate even a little of the kind of excitement I felt as a child, it'll be 100% worth it.
