(incoming hockey rant); mack vs sid similar play elements
if anyone ever tells you mack and sid don't look almost identical on the ice you punch them in the face ~ a breakdown ~ because people are pissing me of 💫
a) low center of gravity / sliding through contact
they both skate with a low center of gravity and strong edge control. sid has always been hard to knock off the puck, and mack is already building that reputation.
they also both slide through and not AWAY from contact/defenders on open ice it's fucking beautiful to watch.
sid; sliding through contact/defenders
mack; mack uses this exact same movement pattern in tight spaces, hips back and STRAIGHT THROUGH defenders.
b) tight turns / cut-backs / curling along boards
another shared habit is the cut-back along the boards... instead of forcing speed, both slow down instead, turn back, and reset.
this means they also use tight small circles to maintain control in the offensive zone.
sid; famously curling along the boards
-sid usually turns one and a half times
mack; does the same curling mottion to buy time. It keeps defenders chasing and extends zone time.
- tiny mack spins + this is his own extra flash, he likes to turn twice
b) general postion/posture
their postion/posture while skating is also very similar. both carry the puck slightly behind their body and shield with hips and shoulders. It makes them extremely difficult to separate from the puck + but this does cause very tense muscles and complications later in a cereer
c) comfortable below goal line / tight space play
both are also comfortable playing below the goal line. it shows a similar confidence in tight spaces.
sid; builds much of his game there
mack; already gravitates to those areas ALOT.
d) deceptively physical / winning puck battles
there’s also a VERY physical element to both! they win puck battles through balance and positioning rather than brute force. (and HOW low they manage to get down, everytime my thighs burn watching them)
other similarities; id say the way they take/receive a pass from someone and just stick handling in general is also extremely similar.
big differences; mack is generally the faster, more explosive straight-line skater vs sid relies more on balance, and goes in wider almost round (?) lines.
i would honestly say its a coincidence but I don't think so. i truly wonder how many hours of footage mack studied of sid in his childhood. (yes this did become SO MUCH more noticeable after the summer training in halifax they had together)
