the title is from paul simon’s ‘call me al.’ that song is very part 5 to me, but this particular lyric is my favorite and fits here very well.

apologies for the ending i seem to need to add a post canon scene with johnny and the coffin in every comic ive made so far.. this is also my trojan horse of sneaking interpretations of gyro and johnny’s individual complexities into lovey dovey slop.

i enjoyed making this and had a brainworm about it til i could complete it, so please enjoy!

executioner gyro redesign

backdrop photo is ponte st angelo, where some executions did take place in the papal states.

this redesign is in preparation for that little comic i teased last night. i wanted to match the design to a more clerical look. i interact with lots of this type of religious garments weekly and find them very lovely, so i wanted to play around with them on a canonically catholic character. apologies for any inaccuracies, i did this mainly for fun. im not sure how well the pauldron would accommodate a swing of the shoulder but the zeppelis do have them in the original design so i decided to make them look a little more normal.

adding the red was my favorite part as it’s a reference to the real executioner for the pope, giovanni battista bugatti, who was widely feared during his 60-something year career up until 1864. his entire robe was red and super scary.

capital punishment is despicable, much less it being carried out in the name of any god who’s supposed to love his people. i mean we all know the catholic church has a rough history. so as cool as gyro looks i think that for a person born so empathetic this job is probably his own personal hell… and i think we see that in the manga. his personality’s contrast with his job is so deeply fucked up and layered and hes such a good deuteragonist for johnny. awesome guy.

Reference "The dream of a knight" 1504 by Rafael Sanzio.

During my art history class, my teacher mentioned that painting and I immediately had this idea. And what I read about the original, it's like the knight's choice between these two sides, or also may be these two things that involve being a knight. What in the original is the woman on the left is the virtue, I thought about the duty and obligations that Gyro has as the oldest son, and for the woman in the right is the pleasure, I thought about the sentimentality.

Honestly, I struggled a lot with the flower that Johnny is holding, I chose to draw the one Gyro is holding in the latest promotional art with the rest of the Joestars. It's a yellow plum, and for what I read it means compassion, hope, and friendship.
