efficientlyHow To Make Comics
Step 1: Looking at comics is very important if you want to make them. You need to get a feel of what comics really are.
Step 2: You need to find your own art style. A lot of people just take other people’s art styles and claim it as their own. Yes, some art styles might look alike but the point is doing it yourself, not stealing someone else work.
Step 3: Inspiration is important as well if you want to make comics. To make comics, you must have energy to wanting to do it. Looking at other people’s work and looking at what cool or nice things the get in return is a great way to inspired. Artist to get inspiration from: @theodd1sout, @its-a-small-world-comics, @untitled-webcomic, @that1badartist etc.
Step 4: Material doesn’t really matter when making comics. Paper and pen is fine or maybe you have a tablet or stylus just sitting there. Remember two things: Comics were first done on paper and if you buy expense equipment that doesn’t mean you will get popular. Use what you have right now and maybe later get what you need to make comics more efficiently. Examples of artist who use paper and pen who are popular: @yellowsplodge1
Step 5: Ideas can come from anywhere if you have an open mind. I personally felt this was easy, coming up with ideas from my environment. Anything funny you see in real life can be an idea or an overused joke online can be an idea. Maybe you reading how to make comics is an idea. Also, if you have a bad memory, like me, just have a notebook that you fill your ideas and write them down when you get a new one.
Step 6: Comics can be as many panels as you want. That being said, don’t restrict yourself from making your own comics. They are some thing you might want to look out for:
1. The letters in your comic needs to be readable. No one will look at them if they can’t read the letter you put, make them big enough and ask a friend to read it and if they could, you passed that test.
2. Try to make your comic as funny as possible. Everyone likes a good laugh. Try to visualize how your audience would react to your comic.
Step 7: Motivation is important when your starting out as a comic creator. You have to pay attention to what you are making and not what everyone else is. I had this problem where I would see people getting popular really fast and I was sitting here with no followers. I felt like quitting but here I am making this guide for anyone who wants to make comics.
Step 8: Just do it! You really have nothing to lose. Get a chance and reach out to other artist and maybe work with some. That’s how you get started in making your own comics.
(btw read my comics too.)
Landscape/Environment Tut
Okay so i got a few notes on how i go about Environments/Landscapes…so i’ll share a method thats easy to work with….bare with me its been a little while since ive drawn them Lol
First thing you want to start of with in your gradient background…use what ever is your preference. Depends on the setting, ima do some type of desert/dusty place.
You’ll learn that the Lasso tool is gonna be your bae when it comes to environments…that and its pretty useful. Now your going to be working in three tones, 1.Dark 2.Mid 3.Light and it will always be the darkest at the front fading to light towards the back…make sense? So you will have three layers for each one to make your life easier and Lock those layers so you will only color within that area. Make sure the dark layer is on top.
Here is where the fun kicks in…we add our dets, try to stay with each tone and dont end up making it all muddy so you cant distinguish each one. Now you can go about this any way you please, you can paint it all in with one brush ( for some reason people get anal about shit like that, thinking there great for using one brush…i think if you got tools use em if you know how to do it right.) Or you can use custom brushes…since this is a tut ill mostly use custom brushes to slap stuff around. Its up to you really, also use the lasso tool like i said its your bae.
The lasso can help define things better for you, so i wanted to add a structure type on the third layer. If you want to give an effect that the selection ive made is in front of the background right click your selection and invert it, add some lighting around the edges…only a little though you dont want to over do it.
Also if you’ve done something on a layer you dont want to mess up or paint on what you can do is create a clipping mask on that layer. Its kinda like locking the layer to that one so you dont go outside of the layer or ruin what you worked on. Make a new layer above the one you wish to attach it to and right click the newlayer, a menu will pop up, your looking for clipping mask. Once you clicked it the layer should look like what ive circled.
Once your done working on each layer we are gonna put in some mist effect, this is something that helps separate each section. So make a new layer between each of your three as shown in the image. Like i said you can use what ever method you like, i just use a soft brush or cloud/mist brush to get what i want.
Now we are going to add some definition to the image a good one to use is Curves. You can find this where your layer menu is, at the bottom you’ll find it, ive circled what your looking for. On the third image is what will appear when you click curves, all you need to do is drag the little square and you’ll see some magic happen. So adjust it to your preference. If you want you can also mess with brightness/contrast too. ALSO i would recommend adding a person in the image, it gives you an idea of the scale your environment is.
I was going to end it there but hey, ill show one last thing…its pretty simple. and that is some water reflection, we are going to turn the middle into water instead cause its a little boring right now. I merged all layers but the first one, you then want to make a selection and copy/paste. Free transform in the shortcut is ctrl T and do a vertical flip on it then adjust so its mirroring the top.
Now make a clipping mask like i explained earlier on the reflected surface and use the radiant tool…i think its called that lol it gives it more of a water surface like you see. For the image below it i used a custom brush which creates a water effect, aaaaaaaaaand bam you got you water now covering the area…easy huh.
And so this concludes the Tutorial and you have the end result. Hopefully that gave some tips on how to approach landscapes…they can be confusing sometimes on where to start. Enjoy and let me know if it was useful or not :P
I don’t know who to give credit to because I do not read Korean! (I realize there is Chinese in the first image, and on the website there’s some Japanese~~ soooo, probably has been passed around a lot) However these and other VERRIE NAISE references came from http://kitasite.net/kr/cgkoza/muscle/arm3/arm3.htm
Do you have anything good on line art in SAI? I've looked in the #inking tag and I can't quite make sense out of it.
There are some features intended to aid inking in SAI, but I personally don’t like them very much for a couple of reasons:the first being that I’m mainly a painter so inking isn’t something I do a great deal of (especially not with the vector layers!)the other being that I use lots of different mediums and programs - so things like stabilisers? They’re not very useful in the long run, being able to draw a neat line in sai with the stabilisers on doesn’t let me do the same in tvpaint, or on a light table!I personally keep it on 0 and don’t really recommend going above 3, purely because I think it’s better in the long run to teach yourself to draw smooth lines. If you find yourself relying on them, I’d suggest gradually reducing the amount SAI smoothens your lines!—REGARDLESS, the actual process of inking in SAI is the same as anywhere else.
If you’re finding the stuff in my inking tag a little confusing, then allow me to break down the basics those posts are talking about for you!First, there are two things you are aiming to give the illusion of in inking whilst only using two colours: Distance and light.Distance is the easiest to understand and show. Remember on the old windows computers how there was always a photo like this on there?
This is a great example of what we call ‘atmospheric perspective’, wherein the further away something gets from the viewer, the more particles in the atmosphere begin to filter the light and make things hazy.Or more simply, the contrast is reduced and the colour gets closer to the sky. So, when colouring, the further something gets away, the less contrast there should be and the more it should blend in with the atmosphere. Most often this is blue, but indoor it could be yellow, or in the evening it could be red. When inking, the way to show less contrast is to reduce the lineweight:
This is useful to remember for backgrounds obviously, but also if you’re foreshortening something, the closer something is the thicker you want to be making the lines. This post shows off this concept very well! How extremely you vary the lineweight is up to you, in this post I’m varying it a lot to make it easier to notice.—And the other thing is shading, which you’re probably most familiar with. As things get darker, the thickness of the line should increase. To show you what I mean, here’s the same sketch but inked to two different light sources:
Looking at these two pictures, even though there isn’t really any shading you should get a sense that the light is coming from different places, right?
If you look at western comics, DC in particular and especially the ones from the last couple decades, a lot of the shading is incorporated into the linework itself.
That’s what this post is about, and it’s basically just what happens when you increase the lineweight in the shadows so much that they become the shadows, and the lost edges discussed in the post are what happen when the lines in the light get so thin they disappear.
—
When you combine these two concepts, you get things like explained in this video, and this video!
As for producing clean lines themselves, you want to use as few lines as possible.
That’s what these exercises are for!
in particular, the one on the left here:
The exercise is to draw a curve (or well in this case circles) which meets three of the dots you have put down. The aim is to improve your line drawing aim, so that when you’re inking you can draw curves that follow your sketch with one line:
I hope that helps! Just keep in mind: use as few lines as possible, and vary lineweight according to the light and distance

So around November a friend gave me a deer carcass for a project I’m in the process of cultivating. I left it hang in a tree over winter to dry out. Today, I went to take it down…but to my surprise, I found new life forming in the heart of death.
