Shirley Chisholm. As the first black woman to run for president for a major political party, she was years ahead of her time. So why don’t more people know about her?
She championed a bill to ensure domestic workers received benefits, was an advocate for improved access to education, and fought for the rights of immigrants.
“She had guts, and she made people believe that they too can be someone, that we are equal, that gender doesn’t mean you can’t achieve the highest office of government,” her goddaughter Marya Boseley says.
That desire to break boundaries was what drove Shirley Chisholm to make a run for president in 1972, seeking the Democratic nomination a mere three years after she became a congresswoman.
Ms Chisholm, whose slogan was “Unbought and Unbossed,” said she never expected to win but hoped her candidacy would “change the face and future of American politics”.
“I stand before you today, to repudiate the ridiculous notion that the American people will not vote for qualified candidates, simply because he is not white or because she is not a male,” she told supporters as she launched her campaign.
I never heard her name in school. Other than hearing Method Man say “I voted for Shirley Chisholm” on Blackout, I knew nothing about her til I read about her on the internet as an adult.
The Democratic Party really fucked Shirley Chisolm over because they wanted a “safe” candidate in George Mcgovern. Then they lost to Nixon.

The Journey is the Destination
Me a little while ago: omg I love it when people talk to me about veganism! I wanna educate others and change the world!
Me now, after being vegan for over a year: I don't give a fuck if your ancestors ate meat, stop asking me extremely misinformed nutritional questions, no it's not expensive, I'm sorry your cousin has some rare disorder that prevents them from adopting a vegan diet but that gives zero excuses for you to not go vegan, yes I know food deserts exist and unless you live in one of them then you have no excuse not to be vegan, no veganism isn't only about food, b12 is not made by animals it's made by a fucking microbe that's why you have consume it and it's fortified in most common &affordable vegan foods, yes my blood tests came up normal last time I went to the doctor thank you very much, protein deficiency is absurdly rare and only seen in starving populations and not vegans, no plants are not sentient, yes you are a complete hypocrite for saying you love animals and then eating their bodies and paying for their torture, no you are not an environmentalist if you eat animal products, I don't give a fuck about your uncle that owns a "humane" farm where he cuddles the cows and sings them lullabies every night before their premature murder, now let me eat my lentils in fucking peace
i hate that when it comes to ethical food choices people always have that ‘well you do you, but don’t tell others what to do/eat’ attitude…
like how does this make sense? all other kinds of activism include changing OTHER people’s behaviour. gay rights activism focuses on stopping other people from being homophobic, BLM focuses on stopping other people from being racist, and so on, and it’s common sense to understand why they want to influence other people who are being hurtful towards a specific group.
so what’s the problem with animal rights activists/vegans who tell people to change their behaviour? why is this specific kind of activism suddenly an issue of ‘well you do what you want but don’t tell ME what to do’…
Well veganism (especially on Tumblr more than anywhere else) is seen as a privilege, which is only a little accurate. I understand some people have allergies, dietary restrictions, health issues, mental health issues, etc etc that prevent them from this but ??? I don't see how that prevents them from making small, positive changes. It's about changing the food system as a WHOLE because right now is it fucked up (and not just for the animals, for millions of humans and the planet but jk no one cares about that) and any effort we can to support better practices help. You don't have to 100% commit to a vegan life style just TRY something new TRY to do positive things TRY to stop victimizing yourself and coming up with a million excuses (that may be valid) and you're welcome to be a part of the change. It's slow but it's happening. Also hate the us vs them, we are in this together.
