holy shit okay may have found a game-changer for web searches...with duckduckgo it's easy to turn off the ai features permanently, but regardless of engine there's the increasing problem of the search results themselves leading mostly to ai-generated articles on random ghost websites that say a lot without any information, and then the information they do give is contradictory or otherwise just wrong. this is especially a problem for me when trying to search for, e.g., a current list of the best products in a certain category.
finally searched for a solution and there IS in fact a giant hand-curated list of sites containing this content. it can be imported to ublock origin on desktop or mobile, and even can be used on iOS via the ublacklist extension in the safari app. it's updated regularly, and importing via the link as described should allow those updates to go into effect automatically.
i've only tested it a little bit, but after importing the list and repeating my duckduckgo search for backpack recommendations, my top results now lead to websites that appear to be linked to actual organizations in some form, with an "about us" page and the name of a founder and everything. the text is still often a bit wordy and SEO-optimized, but it now has actual recommendations that are relevant to the query. BIG IF TRUE???
please do not start talking about The Definition Of Art on this post, or Whether Human Creations Have Souls. i am very tired.
once I added this it took me 15 minutes to find a backpack that met my needs and order it with free shipping. I feel reborn
I wish they’d made me memorise more
I had a good education, in a school system that had left behind the Bad Old Days, when teachers would hit you with a stick if you didn’t rote-memorise endless facts. I was basically never required to memorise anything by rote. I was never threatened with violence either (at least, not by teachers)^1, and I think those two things may be related. I mean, you do basically need to threaten kids to get them to do rote memorisation - even they can see that there’s no point to it. You can just look things up! What’s the use of stuffing your head full to bursting with a load of dry dusty facts?
Except, that’s not how learning works, is it? The brain doesn’t store knowledge like a hard drive, with a fixed amount of space that you can fill by learning, and if you learn too many things you have to erase other things to make room. The brain stores knowledge like a network, or a graph. You learn new things by connecting them to things you already know. New facts aren’t just inserted into the brain in the next empty space, they’re added to the existing structure, connected up to the surrounding knowledge.
If you come across a fact that has no connection to anything you know, your brain decides (usually correctly) that this fact is not useful to you - you can’t do much with it. A beautiful old stone building you walk past every day has a plaque that says “1667”. Ok, so what? If you don’t know anything else related to that, why would your brain bother to hang on to the number? It’s meaningless. The only way to get that kind of fact to stay in your head, without connecting it to your existing knowledge, is sheer repetition ^2.
But if you do have some related knowledge, like, perhaps you know that the Great Fire of London was in 1666, well, now that plaque means something to you. This building was built the year after a huge fire burned down most of the city. I wonder what was there before? Then later, you read in passing that the plague killed like 20% of Londoners in 1665, and again this date might have been meaningless, but now it has things to connect to, so instead of sliding off it, you think “Wow, what an incredibly shitty time to be in London. The vibe while they were putting up that building must have been wild”. And so on. Each thing you know gives more places for new facts to stick to, and those new facts give you yet more possible connection points. The more you know, the easier it is to learn.
And once you know enough, you can connect up the different parts of your knowledge into one huge graph that makes most new facts you come across just automatically stick in your brain without trying. It is a joy to go through life with your understanding of the world effortlessly growing and deepening each day, in a virtuous cycle.
But before you can fly, you have to get up off the floor! If new facts hit your brain one at a time at random, each fact will probably find nothing to connect to, and just fall out again, leaving no purchase for the next one. A few will stick, so eventually you will start to build out from the basic things you started off knowing, but only very slowly, because you’ve haven’t got much surface area for new knowledge to stick to. Most of the information you’re exposed to will bounce off and be wasted.
What you really want, to get this feedback loop kick-started, is a kind of low density ‘scaffolding’ of facts, that covers a wide area, so that new incoming facts of all kinds have a decent chance of finding something nearby to stick to. You could think of it like, you want to spread out a wide area of ‘nucleation points’ for new clusters of knowledge to start growing around.
For example, in order to have dates not just bounce off, you could learn the dates of major historical events: to get full coverage, you probably want to know the boundaries between periods - starts and ends of wars, reigns of the rulers, that kind of thing. To give information about places a chance to stick, you might want to just learn what countries there are, and maybe their capitals.
It doesn’t make sense to go crazy with this, you only want a small fraction of your learning to be this kind of memorisation, since it’s a much harder way to learn any given fact than just slotting it into an existing structure in a way that makes sense. But if you use memorisation efficiently to build a framework skeleton to grow the rest of your knowledge on, it helps enormously.
The problem is, I didn’t realise this kind of thing was a good idea until after my formal education was done, and to be honest I haven’t been very successful at doing it on my own, without external motivation structures. And the worst thing is, now I’ve had years and years of valuable information just bouncing off my brain, where a lot of it might have stuck if I’d only had the structure in place to catch it. I wish the value of memorisation was explained to me early enough to make the most of it.
Footnote 1: I dimly recall that one of my teachers (an older one when I was very young), still kept the stick in the classroom and would talk about how he’s not allowed to use it any more.
Footnote 2: (or mnemonic techniques, which basically all work by artificially inventing connections between the fact and things you already know).

Hey, you are not an embarrassment for not knowing how to do certain household chores/basic self-care. They do not come naturally to us. A lot of it takes practice! Maybe you had a neglectful guardian. Maybe you had one that was very coddling and never thought to teach you. Maybe you haven't lived in a place where these things were available to you or needed. Doesn't matter. It's okay to not know and far more common than you might realise.
That said, this website provides very simple instructions on how to do everyday tasks such as making your bed, using a washing machine, cooking different foods, washing dishes, taking a shower, etc. All you have to do is use the search bar to find the task you're struggling with, and it'll come up with what you need + other related how-to's:)
If you're having trouble navigating it, let me provide you with some examples:
How to clean dishes by hand
How to make your bed (with visual demonstrations of each step!)
How to fold clothes (with visual demonstrations of each step!)
How to take a shower & dry yourself off (also provides ways to shave beards, armpits, legs and genitals)
How to shave legs, armpits, beards, pubic areas, etc. (a more in-depth guide)
How to mop the floor
How to sweep the floor
How to swallow pills
How to make small talk
How to make eye contact in different situations (or how to avoid it while still looking natural)
It's also perfectly okay if these don't help or aren't appealing to you. Unfortunately, nothing helps everyone.
Also if the reason you don't know is developmental , intelectual or learning disabilities making you struggle even if you've been taught a bunch of times , you are so cool and awesome too :^) [smiley face ]

the browser theme is just one i found on the firefox theme 'store'
Hey someone suggested I use ChatGPT to figure out adulting today, and as I was going through the mental list of places I'd rather look, I realized "beloved strangers on Tumblr dot net" was on that list.
So if you have an aspect of adulting that you're really good at-taxes, budgeting, cooking, insurance, credit, time management, house upkeep, anything-please feel free to reblog with any tips.
Not me, but @bitchesgetriches has a lot of great resources for many of these topics on their website.

Hey do you know what rumination is?
Rumination is probably the most common type of OCD compulsion, but I rarely see anyone talking about it. I've talked to multiple people diagnosed with OCD who didn't even recognize it as a compulsion.
Basically, if you have OCD you have terrible intrusive thoughts. They can be about anything, but common themes are fear of being a bad person, fear of hurting someone, fear of contamination. etc.
Rumination is when you get stuck in a spiral. Rumination is when you spend hours catastrophizing, overthinking, analyzing, telling yourself it's going to be okay.
I'll say it again:
Rumination is a compulsion.
Rumination is a compulsion, and that means you have to stop doing it.
I did ERP (exposure response prevention) for my OCD with a therapist! For 9 months! And it did help, but the idea didn't really click until I found this website a couple years later.
And Oh My God. It made things make so much more sense, and I was able to pull myself out of an episode even though I wasn't in therapy or on meds at the time.
Genuinely if you have OCD, or even if you suspect you have OCD, I'm begging you to read some of these articles.
Like this was genuinely life changing for me.

An Incomplete List of Gluten Free Recipes I Love
There are a lot of reasons to have a suite of go-to gluten-free recipes. If you or your partner can't eat gluten, if you are going to a potluck/dinner party and want to make sure everyone there can eat Something, if you are on an archaeological project for 3 weeks sharing a house with a rotating cast of 3-5 other people with various dietary restrictions... you want to make sure you know how to make things that everyone can eat that aren't just Salad.
I make a lot of these for myself regularly or For Special Occasions and can vouch for all of them, they're Real Good
Appetizers
Socca (chickpea-flour flatbread)
Vegetarian
Vegan
Dairy-free
Avocado Deviled Eggs
Vegetarian
Dairy-free
Baked Pears with Goat Cheese, Bacon, and Honey
You can remove any of those things but together they are so good
Lunches
Quesadillas on Corn Tortillas
Optionally Vegetarian
Easy, fast, filling, infinitely customizable. All you really need is butter, a tortilla, and cheese; optionally you can include spices like cumin/chili/paprika/pepper, beans, pulled pork, pulled chicken, beef cubes, hatch chiles, green onion… the quesadilla is your oyster.
Shakshouka (Mediterranean poached eggs in tomato sauce)
Vegetarian
Optionally dairy-free
More of a fancy brunch than a lunch, really. Officially it's a breakfast food but who has time to make it for breakfast.
Soups
Butternut Squash Soup
Vegetarian
Vegan
Dairy-free
I made it with these minor alterations (roast the squash first, it brings out the flavor). If you don't want to go through the time it takes to build up vegetable ends, and you can't find certified gluten-free vegetable stock, using water is okay.
Creamy Roasted Mushroom and Brie Soup
Vegetarian
The recipe calls for flour as a thickening agent; you can use gluten-free cornstarch or rice flour, or just omit it entirely, it’s fine.
Dinners
Black Bean and Sweet Potato Enchiladas
Vegetarian
Mchicha (African potato-peanut-spinach curry)
Vegetarian
Optionally vegan and dairy-free but it's a little harder
Faux Madras Lentils
Vegetarian
Again, if you can't find certified gluten-free stock or broth, replacing it with water is okay. This is full of flavor already.
Fall Dal (Apple Squash Lentils)
Vegetarian
Vegan
Dairy-free
Deserts
Peanut Butter Cookies
The three ingredient peanut butter/sugar/egg classic
Almond-Cornmeal Citrus Cake
It's really good!! I made this one with a berry compote on top instead of glaze and it came out great.
Google says it’s no different than checking IDs at the airport.

Alternative forks of AOSP (Android Open-Source Project) which are not maintained by Google and will not be affected by this:
LineageOS (I use this one)
Graphene OS
Functionally they are virtually identical to stock Android. Android began as an open-source project, and these versions are built off of that.
Fuck Google.
for those like me who cannot install alternative android forks on their phone because the phone in question is thoroughly unrootable, I would recommend downloading anyapk on your phone while you still can. In their own words:
anyapk is a lightweight Android application installer that bypasses Google's developer verification requirements by using local ADB (Android Debug Bridge) connections. Smoothly install any APK file on your device without restrictions, gatekeepers, or corporate approval.
If you're reading this after Google's lockdown date and are unable to install anyapk the regular way, there is a method outlined on the github linked above which tells you how to install anyapk on your phone by plugging it into a computer with ADB installed on it. Once you have anyapk on your phone, you will not have to do that ever again (unless you delete anyapk off your phone)

using linux (as a content creator)
i will preface this by saying that im not an it guy, i dont code or anything but i do love linux. after i found a distribution that i liked i found that finding open source alternatives and trouble shooting stuff etc became pretty satisfying. linux is like a puzzle that you can make into whatever you want if you have the right pieces. but i will apologize in advance to it peeps if i dont use the right technical term for something.

genuine question from someone who would rather chew their arm off than go to a public gym, and also doesnt have a lot of money: how do you safely get into strength training? are there youtube channels, apps (android), etc anyone recommends that makes it approachable and don't lean into diet culture / body shaming?
also the biggest thing that keeps me from working out is that I already have joint and spinal issues and moving the wrong way can fuck up a knee or a shoulder or my spine for days. I really don't want to injure myself, and have unwittingly done so before. resources that are extremely clear on exactly how to move and offer gentler / alternative ways to move for people with limited range are vital.
Okay, so this may not technically be strength training, but muscles are dumber than bricks and cannot tell the difference between your own bodyweight and actual weights.
So, may I recommend:
Hey everyone! My name is Hampton and my brand is Hybrid Calisthenics. You can find me by that name pretty much everywhere on social media.
He runs a YouTube channel where he goes over how to work your way up to more complex exercises (for instance, his pull-ups videos start with using a door jamb and moving your weight back and forth) so it's good for easing yourself into things.
You also don't have to fork out for expensive weights and such if you don't want to/can't. Substitute with stuff you either already have at home or can get from the supermarket and build up the weight you can exercise with. 500 gram cans of butter beans then 750 gram bottles of pasta sauce. 1 litre drink bottle then your 1.5 litre milk bottle. 3 litre bulk-buy bottle of laundry detergent. Etc. One of my dogs weighs 13 kilos and I pick her up on the regular (to her delight). One weighs 16 kg and I pick him up too (to his consternation and mild disapproval). You don't have to fit out some fancy home gym before you can start strength training.
I second Hybrid Calisthenics, that's the program I use. It's run by one guy who's taken it upon himself to make exercising more accessible and it's completely free! Each exercise has different variations based on your ability and each variation is further divided into different levels of difficulty so you can work up to where you want to be. If you can't do a single push up for example then this program will help you work up to the point where you can, and if you're a master of push ups then there are more advanced body weight exercises you can tackle so you can keep moving forward in your training without stagnating. The routine offers a full body workout with absolutely no equipment required for the beginning levels. The only reason you would need to buy anything is if you want to work up to a full pull up, at which point you would need actual pull up rings
Here's his actual website which I feel is easier to navigate than the YouTube channel on its own and organizes things in a way that's easy to understand. He explains everything you need to know about the routine and each individual exercise has both a text description and a video tutorial
I also recommend Yuuka Sagawa's channel. Ignore the clickbaity titles, the movements are gentle and easy and each workout is seldom more than 10min.
株式会社YOU STYLE 東京都中央区銀座5丁目15番1号 機能的で美しく、しなやかな心とからだづくりはこちら:【YOU STYLE FITNESS】
Also, check out workouts for seniors, particularly if you have joint issues or you haven't ever really exercised. Exercises for the elderly are gentler and really focus on essentials (balance and strength), and once you've gained more confidence, you can look for other workouts. Think of these as building the habit of moving. If you do something to move every day, you're building the habit that will compound throughout your life.
If money allows, hire a personal trainer for say 8-12 sessions, there's always some kind of promotion somewhere, and have them teach you proper form for basic movements (squats, rows, lunges etc) so that you can do them on your own properly without hurting yourself. Then ask them for a workout plan for home workouts using bodyweight, and they'll help design one just for you.
I've done this myself and now I lift heavy shit in my early 40s after just 1.5 years of regularly exercising, so start anytime!!
