here are some basic gif etiquettes c:
look guys it’s not math. all you have to do is just RESPECT THE CREATOR’S WISHES. IT’S THEIR CONTENT!!!!! if the creator doesn’t want you to repost their work, don’t do it.
let’s put it in a term that you’ll all understand. let’s say the singer wrote a song and posted it for people to listen. then another person takes a snippet of that song, posted it without crediting them, then say it’s their song. is that fair??? no. another way to think about it is fanart, the artist drew it, took hours or even days to finish it so that they can post. then someone else takes it and reposts it without their permission then act like it’s their fanart. do you see how that’s not okay????
for those of you who don’t know what’s going on. a lot of twitter users are reposting tumblr gifs from tumblr content creators without permission or credit. if you are one of those people, please feel free to unfollow me because i do not allow reposting of my gifs and i will never support reposters.
for those who want to support tumblr content creators, here are some things you can do:
tell the tumblr content creator via ask or dm them with the link to the tweet
reply under the tweet with the link to the original tumblr post and tell the twitter user that the creator does NOT allow reposts of their work and ask them to delete it. the more replies about that, the more likely they will delete their reposts.
for those who make content, these are some things that you can do to help protect your gifs:
disable right clicking on your desktop theme so that they can’t save it on their laptops/pcs (click on the link there)
disable dragging of images on desktop theme so that they cannot open a new tab to right click and save (click on the link there)
watermark your gifs (unfortunately it has to come to this)
if you really really really want to make sure that people don’t repost, put “do NOT repost my gifs” or “ repost 🚫” in the captions
for those who can’t make their own content but still want to post something:
ask for permission. if the creator says “no” then do NOT do repost. respect their work and decision. it’s not like it’s going to end you if you don’t repost someone else’s work.
if the person is kind enough to allow you to repost, CREDIT them. you can do that by linking their twitter, tumblr, and ESPECIALLY their original post.
make your own content. if you don’t know how, there are a ton of tutorials. here’s a list of resource to help you get started.
it takes hours to finish a GOOD gifset so please don’t just go around reposting other people’s work. thank you~
nobody deserves tumblr content creators. all u guys do is delete caption, steal gifs, post w/o credit and lie. there is so much more work that goes into a lot of those amazing gifs than u can imagine, everything from getting the coloring exactly right to almost blowing up ur computer trying to use topaz, avisynth and photoshop at the same time. all that for those gifs to get 32 notes on tumblr cus no one reblogs gifsets anymore and only for some asshat on twitter to steal it and get 4k rts.
yes yes you’re right op but also people should just use ezgif.com and stop making it sound so hard
people who have never made a gif that’s even mildly pleasing to look at in their life: just use ezgif 😁😊🥰😂!
Re: Gif reposters on twt
So the ones of you who have a twitter account probably saw that you can post more than 1 gif in a tweet now (when you convert the gif to apng). Naturally, this lead to a LOT of big and small accounts to repost gifsets and enjoy the new feature, with no regard to the original gif maker not even with a simple credit. I’m asking you PLEASE, please, respect content creators who spend hours on end making their creations for you to enjoy. Respect them by following their rules. If they don’t allow reposting, don’t. If they allow it with certain conditions, fulfill them. It costs you NOTHING to be respectful and give the credit where its due. Respect them by REBLOGGING their content, by enjoying what they have to offer. As you may have noticed, the activity on tumblr has been on a steady decline for a while now, and this DOES affect content creators’ motivation, massively (I know you’ve noticed how many content creators have abandoned tumblr by now). Of course we enjoy creating stuff regardless of notes, but I can assure you one like or reblog makes all the difference. When the likes to reblogs ratio is SO strikingly imbalanced, yes we notice and yes sometimes we feel very discouraged. Your reblog and support makes us feel appreciated but you’re not obligated to it. But at the very least, don’t support reposters. Don’t help spreading stolen content. Respect content creators by making sure to interact or spread the ORIGINAL content only, by not encouraging reposters in any way, by asking them for the credit every time you see something reposted.
Lastly, I always notice that gifs as a creation form are always being reposted with way less regard for credit than, say, videos or fanart. And I fail to realize why. Gifs take so much time and effort just as any other type of fan creation and they shouldn’t be treated as “less” deserving of credit. Gifs are imported, trimmed, smoothed, sharpened, recolored and resized before they are uploaded. They go through so much processing before they are created. And if you honestly think it’s not that big of a deal & it’s “just a gif” then I encourage you to make your own gifs and post them wherever you want. Just don’t go on people’s blogs saving hundreds of gifs for your threads and likes/rts. Thank you.
