photos by paul nicklen for national geogrphic, who explains: “i have been traveling to northern baffin island for more than twelve years to try and get one underwater picture of a male narwhal. narwhals are very shy. they have a sensitive nature and excellent echolocation. you can see hundreds passing by the ice edge, but when you slip into the water, you may never see one.

“late one afternoon, i had been in the -1.7°C water for a couple of hours, and i was freezing so badly that my legs and arms were cramping up. i couldn’t feel my lips around my snorkel, so i just stared into the black 2,000-foot abyss trying not to think about how cold i was.

“then, out of the corner of my eye, i noticed something bright traveling through the murky water. i turned my head, and there they were: several male narwhals, swimming in beautiful formation. i put my frozen finger on the shutter and, as i was about to take the picture, the narwhal closest to me let out a stream of bubbles. i snapped the picture in what was the most incredible moment of the assignment.“

Whale sharks are not only the largest shark – they’re the largest fish in the ocean. These gentle giants feed on some of the tiniest creatures in the ocean: plankton. These sharks may be huge, but never fear, they come in peace. The whale shark is one of only three filter-feeding sharks. Of course, whale sharks are not whales at all; they earned the name “whale” solely for their impressive size. A fun nickname for whale sharks is in Africa, where the sharks are called “papa shillingi.” This nickname in Kenya came from the myth that God tossed shillings upon the backs of these large fish.

Orca with ‘horrific’ injury to dorsal fin performing again at SeaWorld

Less than three months after sustaining a “horrific” injury to her dorsal fin, Katina is apparently performing again at SeaWorld Orlando, though with an altered appearance that likely will remain permanent.

Heather Murphy, founder of Ocean Advocate News, told BNQT that she went to check on the injured orca Saturday and discovered her performing again. She did not know when Katina resumed working, adding that SeaWorld has not reported any updates.

“Although she does seem to be improving, her dorsal fin is permanently damaged,” Murphy told BNQT. “If she were to get an infection, it could be a death sentence for her. She has reportedly been on antibiotics for so long that her body has become resistant, and she will not be able to withstand a major infection.”
