Recently, as part of the Empty the Tanks campaign we had volunteers travel to Mexico in order to document the dolphin captivity facilities w
Recently, Empty the Tanks - Capitulo México volunteers went to investigate dolphinariums within the state of Quintana Roo, a tourism hotspot where you can find places such as Cancun and Cozumel. Shockingly, this small area has 19 marine parks that profit off of the exploitation of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises).
In an article from the Dolphin Project, founder of Empty the Tanks, Rachel Carbary, describes what volunteers found at “Delphinus”, a company that operates several marine parks in the region under the same brand name. Poor water quality, pollution in the animals environment, blatant falsities to guests in regards to how dolphin family units work, noise pollution and shockingly small tank size were just some of what volunteers found.
Dolphins were documented to have abrasions on their rostrums at a location in Playa Mujeres due to the constant foot work that occurs in dolphin interactions. At another location in Cancun, the cetaceans were found to have excessive rake marks (teeth on skin gashes) across their bodies:
“Rake marks such as what we see on the dolphins in captivity are well beyond what is seen or documented in the wild. There is a Delphinus facility inside The Interactive Aquarium in Cancun, and there were obvious signs of tank mate bullying taking place there. On each of the visits to that location, volunteers witnessed a single dolphin being bullied so badly it would jump out of the water and onto the edge of the tank to get away from the other dolphins. Again, in the wild these animals have the entire ocean when they need to flee, but in captivity they are trapped.”

This is super exciting, because there is no other underwater cam (That I know of) in the Salish Sea! The only other Under Water cams that I know are the Main Rubbing Beach and the Strider Rubbing Beach from Orcalab on Explore.org!

The Southern Residents are in dire need of our help; with J-14 Samish missing and the life of J-28 Polaris and her calf J-54 hanging by a thread, these whales need our help immediately or we may lose them.
Contact Lawmakers! Let them know why destroying the four lower Snake River dams is imperitive to the survival of the Southern Residents.

General Help:
Don’t eat salmon, this is taking away the orca’s food supply. This includes farmed salmon is extremely detrimental to the environment. Reduce water usage, electricity usage. Stop Toxic run off. Storm drains take harmful chemicals straight to the ocean. Use natural cleaning products that do not contain harmful chemicals. (Recently Ace Hardware began including signs for Orca Safe products! See Here. All the safe products are easy to identify and the advise written might help you find options in other stores too!)
Donation Help: The Whale Museum, Center for Whale Research, Orca Network. Adopt a southern resident orca! Become a member of the Center for Whale Research! Petition Help: Support a Whale Protection zone for them Things Nearby/Visiting People can do! Responsible Whale Watching Heck- Land Whale Watching Citizen Science Let the Orca Network and Salish Sea Hydrophone Network know where they have been/are! Get involved in restoring Salmon Habitat in your area

every so often I remember that whales molt
I’m not sure why I feel this way, but imo this is the most cursed marine mammal fact I have ever heard
THAT’S RIGHT AND THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME SO I CAN INFLICT THIS ON EVERYONE AT 1AM!
Mammals normally shed their skin in small flakes all the time when their skin cells die off, but because whales are living in the ocean -AKA, Bacteria Stew- flaking off like that would cause microabrasions (really tiny cuts) that would mean the whale is continually fighting off infections. So, when a whale needs to replace it’s dead skin cells, it preps it’s new skin underneath, then sheds all it’s dead skin cells at once, like a lizard:
but not having hands makes it hard to remove this gross film, so molting brings many whales clsoe to shore where they can roll around on rocky/sandy coastal seabeds to scratch it off. Here’s a bunch of Beluga coming in for a mass scratch:
And THIS is what a chunk of Sperm Whale Molt looks like, floating in the water before it’s devoured by pelagic microfauna, because you take what calories you can get in the open ocean:

Wish you could be swimming in the ocean and you see a huge empty whale billowing like a balloon. like a latex glove a hundred feet long. imagine getting tangled in that. what if you died cause you got caught in an empty whale like it’s a big blanket
