Daily reminder that we do not actually live in a dystopian movie put the apocalypse down and back away slowly. You know when your cleaning a room and you pull everything out of it's draws to sort through it and you're like "what the fuck have I done I'm never going to be able to tidy all of this" I think that's the stage we're at in the world. Thanks to social media we've pulled out all the messed up shit from the cupboards of the world, it was always there but now we can see it and we're going to have to sort it all out we made this mess and we can fix it. Falling to the floor sobbing will not clean a crusty room. A group of people working systematically (preferably with music in the background) will.
it's because the bear wouldn't kill me just for being a woman. the bear doesn't kill me for fun. the bear can be shouted at, and will leave me alone. the bear won't make a tiktok complaining about how i crossed to the other side of the path when i saw him coming. if a bear kills me, it's just being a bear: it cannot understand logic. it is not acting out of malice - just fear or hunger.
bell hooks once wrote about how porches might be the only outside space left for women - it is still the domain of the house while it is also outside-but-safe. when i am in the woods, i am in the bear's home, and he has a right to defend his property. outside spaces - anywhere at night, certain parks in the day - those are often implicitly "owned" by men. i cannot explain the feeling of knowing when you have entered a man's "territory." you walk into a place and just know you are in their space. you get a sick sense - you're in danger.
the other day a group of about 8 men were fooling around in the woods while i walked my dog. i had to go around, take the extra 3 miles just to avoid them. it's okay, i like walking. this wasn't even a #feminism moment. it was just a tuesday.
what a plain and easy question. only one of the situations is seen as a tragic accident. i would rather die and have a park bench erected in my honor rather than have my family questioned about why they let me, an adult, walk in the woods in the first place when i should really be at home in the kitchen.
i worked in retail and food service. i have had women say and do absolutely heinous and abusive things to me - not because i was a woman, but because i was there, and they were angry. the way men treated me when angry was different - it was because i was a woman. you can always feel the difference, how there's an undertone of i'd hurt you worse if i could get away with it. i keep seeing people try to cite stupid statistics. why is there always a strange rage whenever women agree on things? like men can argue their way out of our lived experiences? it isn't a buzzfeed quiz - which of these traumas are you? 10 super cute ways not to fear strange men.
i have actually (thrice!) seen a bear in the wild, by the way. i died each time, obviously, and am a ghost writing to you. (it was scary but completely and utterly fine). the second encounter was a black bear with her cub. she looked at me like - do we have to do this or are we good? my dog was busy sniffing a bush, completely nonreactive. i felt like i was in a sitcom: feminist poet reacts - does she actually mean she'd choose the bear? my only thought was - she's so beautiful. her paws are massive.
and there's a part of me that feels the rage spinning out in a corner. why do we have to come up with quippy little comments in order to teach men empathy. would you rather die in a car accident or due to a mugging? and would you rather your house burn down due to an electrical fire or due to arson? gee willikers - it's almost like we're human people, and want to risk the accident versus the intention.
i would rather my last thought be oh shit, a bear rather than i'm a person too. why doesn't that matter? why don't you care?
wow I can’t believe it’s been almost fourteen years since Kahlan Amnell and Cara Mason permanently rewrote my brain chemistry. the passage of time is disgusting
oh my god i am a thousand years old, i miss them
Had a crush on him since atpf and it’s definitely come back stronger 🙌
I don't want to sound crazy but I need you to know that I require to be told nice things. To be reminded that I am enough. My scars may be healed but they are still scars at the end of the day, and so while it wasn't you who put them there I need reassurance you will not add more. I need to be told I am okay. That I'm enough. That I do matter. That perhaps you won't just leave one day with me confused and wondering what I did wrong.
The Panthers used to ride around and follow the police.
So the cops would pull over some sorry black person, and get ready to rough him up, but then there were the Panthers right behind them. Watching, armed to the teeth, and citing legal statutes. It’s inspirational.
Bring it back.
Bring this back.
For real.
That’s why the FBI broke them up, isn’t it ?
That among other community initiatives. They had weapons training, self defense, their free breakfast program and ran a newspaper. They raised money to pay for bail and legal funding for people. And they used to notify the community of their rights and encourage people to know the laws and protest the one which were unjust. That type of shit irked the local police and damned sure struck a nerve with the FBI. They were taking back the streets and providing the protection the police were never interested in bringing to their neighborhoods from the very start. So it’s always fuck the FBI for me.
To be more specific they were communists distributing and teaching communist theory to their communities. Their organization also functioned and was organized by Marxism. And within that context it was Very Bad for the Black Panthers to be doing a better job of taking care of their communities than capitalists were.
For example, aside from aiming to monitor and end police brutality they also cared Deeply about their communities. So much that they also provided healthcare which included ambulances and vaccines. Black neighborhoods often had to wait Way longer for ambulances when necessary so the Black Panthers stepped up. They even had free clinics-funded by donations and ran by professionals- that provided some basic services that Black people were being underserved in.
Each local chapter was responsible for raising funds for its clinic from local businesses, churches, and healthcare professionals. Trusted volunteer professionals staffed the free clinics. These professionals included physicians, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians, and medical students who also trained community members to staff the clinics as lab technicians, patient advocates, and community health workers.
[…]PFMCs primarily provided first aid and basic services such as childhood vaccinations and screenings for high blood pressure, lead poisoning, tuberculosis, and diabetes. In 1971 PFMCs began community education and screening of sickle cell anemia, a genetic disease mainly affecting people of African ancestry.

Free breakfast in school?
Also the Black Panthers. They saw hungry kids who were getting bad grades and falling asleep and decided to feed them to see if it helped. It did. So much so that schools and governments started implementing it.
Free Breakfast For School Children was one of the most effective. It began in January 1969 at an Episcopal church in Oakland, and within weeks it went from feeding a handful of kids to hundreds. The program was simple: party members and volunteers went to local grocery stores to solicit donations, consulted with nutritionists on healthful breakfast options for children, and prepared and served the food free of charge.
School officials immediately reported results in kids who had free breakfast before school. “The school principal came down and told us how different the children were,” Ruth Beckford, a parishioner who helped with the program, said later. “They weren’t falling asleep in class, they weren’t crying with stomach cramps.

Between healthcare, Marxism, providing food, monitoring police, and showing everyone that aid could be provided through voluntary donations and free of cost to those receiving it….
The Black Panthers were dangerous to capitalism.
It’s why cointelpro targeted them.
I cant help it I love men covered in blood
GET TO KNOW A FAMOUS WIZARD!
I was supposed to post this at the same time as the When Do They Kiss podcast launch episode on 16 August, but better late than never!
It belatedly occured to me that I assigned my poor podcast guests frigging HOMEWORK 48 hours before the recording and they both managed to turn it in on time LMAO.
I hope you find these responses as amusing as I do :D
Witch Weekly is running a ‘Get To Know A Famous Wizard’ weekly column. Each featured wizard is given a series of questions to answer. Hermione forces Draco to participate in what he describes as, “An utter waste of time.” But he will do anything she asks and so he fills out the bloody questionnaire.
The 3 participating Dracos (are from):

I humbly petition entry into the BIRTHDAY UNENDING. Today (28th) is my 54th birthday. Single, alone in an uncertain political nightmare & fall squarely into the GOP crosshairs of doom (single, old, female (pre-existing condition!) poor & southern) Work full-time for barely above minimum wage & have a substantial amount of debt. But, by Gods I'm never late on my bills & pay above minimum! I love & support a fleet of felines (crazy-cat-lady) & could heat a small county (menopause hot flashes SUX)
WELCOME TO YOU, BIRTHDAY CHILD. IT SOUNDS AS IF THE WORLD OUTSIDE OUR WALLS HAS NOT ALWAYS BE KIND. WE CANNOT PROMISE THAT THE WORLD INSIDE THEM WILL ALWAYS BE KIND, EITHER, FOR WHILE WE STRIVE TO BE A FORCE OF KINDNESS, SOME WILL SEE IT AS CRUELTY, AND WE CONTAIN ELEMENTS–THE CORN, THE BLOOD, THE GLITTER–THAT HAVE IDEAS AND IDEALS OF THEIR OWN. BUT AT LEAST WE CAN TELL YOU THIS MUCH, AND TELL YOU TRUE:
YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE A HOME HERE.
HERE IS YOUR PLACE AT THE TABLE. HERE IS YOUR CONICAL HAT. HERE IS A STONE, TO HOLD IN YOUR HAND, AND REMEMBER THAT IT IS BUT ONE SMALL FRACTION OF THE WEIGHT OF THE WORD, AND IT IS ALL YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BEAR.
WELCOME TO THE BIRTHDAY. WELCOME TO THE BIRTHDAY. WELCOME TO THE BIRTHDAY UNENDING.
Here is a stone, to hold in your hand, and remember that it is but one small fraction of the weight of the world, and it is all you are required to bear.
Goddamn.
