I finished LIATOTZA recently and I have a bone to pick with you. A chewed, gnarly, flesh hanging off the end bone.
LIATOTZA Draco is like the magnum opus of morally grey Draco. Like, I love morally grey characters and having to jump through hoops to justify their actions and accept them. (The final arc of this book did most of the heavy lifting for me on this and I loved love loved it.) However. It has become apparent to me after speaking to some friends who have also read LIATOTZA, that my grey may not be grey at all and perhaps a concerningly darker shade. Because why am I incapable of resisting doing the same thing with Amarov?
I'm a sucker for love triangles and my love-triangled-pavlov-conditioned-monkey-brain immediately decided we were in a love triangle with H x D x A despite having little to no evidence of one. So when he did the thing and I realised, Oh dear, I seem to have misstepped and need to go back to my live commentary tweets and delete every one that said how much I wanted to be alone in a room with Amarov, it was a bit of a shock to the system.
After much good-natured debate and actually finishing the book, I think you did this on purpose. And this is definitely some kind of blame-shifting coping mechanism. I was wondering, humbly despite how I began this ask, if there was a post or an ask anywhere that you might've written more about his character/your process with him?
more importantly, can I fix him?
I have to tell you that I don't usually enjoy love triangles for probably the same reason I don't enjoy harem or reverse harem. I am a simple woman with simple needs and my brain and loins cannot process more than one love interest at a time.
HOWEVER. What you may be spotting, dear, perceptive reader, is that Alexander Amarov's character arc was different in the original story conception.
What you've read is Amarov Version 2. I initially intended for him to represent a version of Draco that was Draco's worst self. Imagine a Draco who loved her but was so selfish that he didn't want (or didn't know how to want) the best for her. Our Draco skirts this line a little, already (but he looks good in skirts).
But then I decided that it felt wrong because Hermione's too smart to fall for two assholes. I can forgive her one asshole, but both? I can't remember who it was in the story who says something like, 'she has a thing for monsters or monsters have a thing for her'. That would be true if I ran with the love triangle idea.
