When a Lovebird Can't Follow

Castiel died, and Dean stopped living. Dean swears to the empty that he will be quiet as long as he can be with Cas. The Empty, enjoying how much pain Dean is in, deny's his request and uses his greif to taunt him. Desperate and delusional, Dean swears to keep his promise. Even after he is thrown back in time by Jack for everyone's safety. Even after there are mysterious portals being torn open throughout the world because of his heartache. Dean won't give up. Not for anything. He will do anything to be together with Cas. Even if that means ripping out his own vocal chords to do it.

Sleeping Hunger

Dean left the horseman’s rings in the trunk of the impala after Sam sacrificed himself to stop Lucifer. After everyone he loved left him all at once, it was easy to forget he left them there. Several years later, he gets a harsh reminder that he should really take better care of the extremely powerful artifacts he's left lying around. Now, Cas is cursed with famine and since Jimmy left, his hunger is beginning to drive him mad. He just hopes they can get them all back before he does something he regrets. Dean is just happy that Cas is sticking around more than he usually does.

My thoughts here:

I mean if "played" means at least flirting, and Dean was at least a little bit aware (At the very least having one of their moments), then that means Dean thinks that Cas thinks he knows how he feels and used it against him.

Like "You played me," and "You scammed me" aka "You know how I felt about you and you used it against me," kind of puts other things into perspective.

Like all the anger Dean feels toward Cas later is really "You really are just like all the other angels / you can't feel anything," (But does he really believe that?) and/or "I still care about you and can't let you go," because Dean is desperate for family/love and loves to hurt himself right? Wants what he can't have? Glutton for self punishment and DAMN if loving Cas isn't self punishment.

And oh shit once Cas confesses his feelings "what do you mean we could have had it all along," comes into play again.

Really both of them love a good ole' dose of self punishment.

cas takes in a stray cat. dean wouldn't mind so much if he didn't find himself jealous of all the attention and affection the thing is getting from *his* angel

Dean was a little annoyed when Cas brought the cat home.

First there were all the weird, sometimes noisy toys that were left all over the bunker. Some were little balls Dean would accidentally kick, that jingled from the little bells inside. Others were like fishing lines with feathers on the end, specifically designed or cats that needed to be attached to doorways.

Though, Dean did get a good laugh when he realized the cat's favorite toys were Sam's hair ties. Cas would use them to play fetch for at least an hour before the damn thing got too tired to walk. Once Sam realized who had been taking all of them, he started buying more of them instead of being rightfully annoyed like Dean was.

Traitor.

Then came the cat hair. It was everywhere. Cas did his absolute best to clean it all up as often as he could, but when he started to pet the damn thing it made it all pointless. "Is this thing ever going to go bald," Dean griped as he sneezed for the third time in two minutes.

"Don't listen to him," Cas cooed. "He's didn't mean it."

That was what really pissed Dean off the most.

Not the toys, or the petting, or the cat hair or even the fact that his allergies were acting insane.

It was the talking.

Cas talked to the damn thing way more than he ever seemed to talk to Dean. Like he was telling it the kind of secrets he only used to share with him. The "Promise not to tell another soul," kind that made Dean's hell scorched soul flutter once upon a time.

It wasn't fair.

Why was he jealous of a friggin cat.

"She has a name," Cas glared once again, "Grace, hasn't done anything wrong. And you have a dog. Why can't I have a cat?"

"Because," Dean argued childishly.

"Because?"

"Dogs are cooler, and your cat is..." Dean tried to think of something, anything to say that didn't make him sound like an ass, "Gross." Oops.

"Gross? Dean you let your dog sleep in the bed with you. Cats can clean themselves. When was the last time you cleaned miracle?"

"Last night! You complained about 'that wet dog smell stinking up the place' for ten minutes!"

Cas rolled his eyes. "At least Grace smells clean. Why does Miracle never smell clean even after she's had a bath?"

"Because she's cool. Don't be jealous," Dean half heartedly glared just as Miracle came wagging over to him. "Isn't that right girl? Aren't you the coolest?"

Dean gave Miracle a bright grin, then glanced up to see a familiar look on his best friends face.

Oh.

"Uh... I mean...," Dean cleared his throat. "Wanna take them to the pet store later? I think they are opening that big one a few towns over. It's a bit of a drive but--"

"That sounds like fun," Cas said too quickly to be casual.

"Okay. Is Grace going to be okay? I know cats and cars don't mix well."

Cas smiled down at his beloved cat. "She will be fine. She's cool."

"Right. Of course she is," Dean replied. This time, he meant it.

It’s already done a million times but I can’t stop thinking about a scenario where Cas comes back from the empty with a factory reset and also not remembering the confession. So you have Dean being excited and crying happy tears because Cas is back and now he can finally say I love you back and they can be happy together. Only for Cas to hold sobbing Dean who is clutching at him with all his strength and to go “what is this about?”

Thinking about this, what are the chances of dean choosing to not remind him? I mean Cas’s love killed him right? Yeah, I think Mr I kill everything I touch because I’m poison can just decide it’s better this way. And just be quietly miserable about it. What then?

But then they are both quiet and miserable because it doesn't erase Cas' love for him and then it's only a matter of time to see who breaks first because there is no end of the world scenario hanging over their head.

But now I have a whole list in my head about how it's Dean who finally breaks or is forced to break and ends up crying because he is mr broken and kills everything he touches

He is just building up the courage because during Cas' confession he tells Dean that he isn't just a killing machine and broken and that's when Dean finally believes it. He proves it when he fights GOD but suddenly he has a problem when he needs to prove it to Cas? What's up with that? Why is that 100x more terrifying?
