You should also be able to figure out what a text is saying without understanding every word. 90% of the time you'll do just fine even if a word is unfamiliar. You should be able to understand the meaning of a word through context, or at least the meaning of the sentence or paragraph. There are some rare instances where the specific word is crucial, but most of the time it's not necessary to understand the text.

This is a skill you are taught in foreign language classes btw. When you get to a certain level, they give you texts with words you probably don't know yet, and you have to summarise the text without looking any of them up. It really helps with your literacy skills. I can really recommend picking up some books with unfamiliar vocabulary and trying to understand it without looking up words

Even if you can't figure it out from context, you should have the gut instinct to look it up. You know who's going to use lots of big words, gleefully, without ever explaining anything? Hospitals, insurance, lawsuits, contracts, your boss, the government - people who you know, deep down, that you cannot trust and who you are going to have to advocate for yourself to.

When you decide, "Well, I'm too stupid to look it up and this person is evil for saying it," the people who benefit the most are the people who want to scam you, abuse you, mistreat you and milk you for money. Do not surrender in advance. Giving up without a fight doesn't show the big mean ableists what-for, it just fucks you over and makes you feel good for all of five seconds.

“When you get to a certain level, they give you texts with words you probably don’t know yet, and you have to summarize (sic) the text without looking any of them up.” yup, I remember vividly doing this all four years of french class when i was in high school, reading books and things in french loaded with unfamiliar words—i remember doing this a bit when i was teaching myself german, too (albeit with some difficulty as this was the mid-to-late 2000s and you had to go through pages and pages of google searches to find what you were looking for, so i had work cut out for me when it came to looking up texts in german). and some of the words would make a noise in my head and i could figure out the gist of it from there, a skill that’s followed me to this day.

and i can firsthand confirm the “using big words gleefully with no context to manipulate you” thing as well. i’ve had people come to my door trying to sell me internet or insurance and they assume that, because of my baby face and my sun-kissed skin, that i’m an idiot so they’re always shocked when i say no. literacy can and will save you from the real ableists (the real sexists and racists, too).
