Q: What products do you use to color your hair?
A: I have used a variety of pinks of the years. Finally, I decided to start mixing my own custom pink color, which is a combination of any pink I have lying around + purple and copper to tone it down a bit, since I now prefer more muted pinks to neon pinks. However, below are the colors I have used in the past:
Special Effects âAtomic Pinkâ (discontinued)
Joico Color Intensity âHot Pinkâ
Bleach London âPearlescentâ
Moroccanoil âRose Goldâ
Moroccanoil âHibiscusâ
>> All of these I dilute with the cheapest white conditioner I can find, plus a little dot of Manic Panicâs âShocking Blueâ to keep the cool tones.
Q: What products do you use to bleach your hair?
A: Schwarzkopf Professional Blond Me Premium Lift mixed with a 6% developer from the same brand.
Q: Do you have to bleach your hair before you dye it?
A: Yes I do, as I have naturally light brown hair. If you are looking for a vibrant or pastel shade, you must bleach your hair until it is nearly white.
Q: Do you have to tone your hair before you color it?
A: I do not. However, when I do my roots instead of putting pink on them, the mixture I use is primarily lavender with about 1% pink. Purple tones will cancel out the yellow tones in the hair, and the resulting in a cooler pink instead of a salmon pink.
Q: How long do you leave the bleach and color on?
A: Everyoneâs time will be different but thankfully my hair lifts very easily. I can get to very pale blonde in 45 minutes with the bleach I use. I leave the color on for the same amount of time.
Q: How often do you touch up your roots?
A: Every 6 - 8 weeks.
Q: What is your natural hair color?
A: Light brown
Q: What is your natural hair texture?
A: Medium thickness and wavy.
Q: How often do you wash your hair?
A: Once a week if Iâm trying to preserve the color. In between I use dry shampoo. This helps the color to last longer and reduces shampoo damage (shampoo strips away the hairâs natural oils which help keep it healthy!)
Q: How do you keep your hair so healthy?
A: (1) Washing my hair less to maintain itâs natural oils
(2) I do not use any heat tools.
(3) I do not tease my hair.
(4) Before I wash my hair, I will apply some coconut oil to it and let that condition it for a few hours.
(5) I have a leave-in conditioner I use after washing.
(6) Once a month I do a hair mask.
Q: How do you achieve such curly hair with no heat or teasing?
A: I do wet-set pincurls with bobby pins and let them dry overnight in a hair cap.
Q: When did you first dye your hair pink?
A: July 31, 2015. It has been pink ever since!
Q: How do you keep your pink hair from becoming brassy? (salmony)
A: I mix a tiny dot of Manic Panicâs âShocking Blueâ dye in with white conditioner and leave that one for 10 minutes in the shower over wet hair to put the cool tones back into the pink. Additionally, when it comes time to color my roots, I color them lavender (which will fade to a cooler white tone atop yellow) instead of straight pink (which will fade to salmon atop yellow).
Q: Do you have any tips for first time hair-dyers who plan to bleach first?
A: Yes, if you are getting your entire head of hair bleached, definitely get it bleached by a professional your first time. You can keep up with the roots yourself afterwards if you feel up to it, but a whole head of hair will require a skilled professional to minimize damage. Extra things to note:
⢠Your hair professional should know, when bleaching an entire head of hair, it is best to start with the middle of the strand. Your roots will turn faster because of the heat from your head, and your ends are the most susceptible to damage and brittle, so you want the bleach on both ends of the hair as little time as possible
⢠Everyoneâs hair is different due to the genetic makeup of the strands. How long it takes to bleach will depend on the shade and hair type. If you cannot reach your desired lightness with bleach in under an hour, consider doing a second bleaching session a few days later to minimize the damage from bleaching all at once
⢠Do not wash your hair for a few days after bleaching. Your hair needs time to recover and build up itâs natural oils again. When you do wash your hair, leave the conditioner on at least 10 min, and consider doing a hair mask
⢠Do not brush your hair when itâs wet. The hair is more elastic when itâs wet and the strands break more easily
⢠Believe it or not, washing your hair, in general, is not all that great for you (especially for already-damaged hair). Consider training your hair to no longer require a daily wash
Q: How do you bleach your own roots?
A: I split my hair into four sections (like Temari from Naruto lol). Then I take one section out at a time and turn the âpagesâ of each quadrant of hair like a book until each section is done. This way, I never miss a spot!
Q: Can you lighten your hair with anything other than bleach?
A: No. Unfortunately, the only way to truly lift your hair color is with bleach.
Q: How do you maintain the color? What kind of hair products you use, etc.?
You can refresh the color by adding a small amount of the dye to your conditioner and using it as you normally would in the shower. However, most of color maintenance has to do with how you take care of your hair. Washing too often is the biggest offender for fading the color, and the sun will fade it as well. So, investing in dry shampoo & wearing a hat to the park can make a huge difference in color longevity!
