A Writer's Thoughts turned 12 today!

This page has been through numerous name changes and had a different focus countless times. It has had the same URL for over a decade, because I feared it would be difficult to get back if I changed it. 

Originally, this was iseeprettygirlseverywhereigo for a year or so, but for 10-11 years, it’s been 0ptimistprime, and I don’t see that ever changing. I’ll never delete this page, for nostalgia alone, but I hope it sticks around for another decade so I can show my kid how embarrassing his mom used to be at the same age.

Rules for Vanishing - A Review

Rules for Vanishing was a thrilling ride. I love documentary-styled novels, similar to Sleeping Giants, because it really makes the entire book come to life in a different way than just getting lost in a really good, traditional novel. This book reminded me both of The Blair Witch Project and Broken Girls (young girl goes missing: girls, foul play, and ghosts are suspect), both in the way they tell their stories and the sinister feelings it has lying underneath. This book brings me back to my adolescent age, where everything was an adventure, even the spooky things. As an adult who still loves reading semi-young adult novels and stories, this one read well enough for it to be smack dab in between adult and ya. Don't pass this one up. It's great for a read anytime, but if you're feeling particularly spooky, read this when you're all alone for a good weekend.

Wilder Girls - A Review

This book is not for the faint of heart and certainly a book that everyone needs to read. Even though this is a YA novel, young adults and adults alike need to read this. This post-apocalyptic novel is not one to shy away from and shows how far our fighting spirits go, especially the fighting spirits in young women. The writing, paired with the contents of the story, was woven beautifully to convey a harrowing tale that sadly doesn't seem all that fiction if it were to happen in another fifty to a hundred years from now. This novel is fast-paced and will grab you from the start. Its grip is unrelenting and it will have its hooks in you until the very last page. Don't sleep on this book, and add it to your TBR ASAP.

Haunted - A Review

I'll admit, this had me hooked from the first page. When someone tells you that Danielle Vega is the young adult genre's answer to Stephen King, you have to wonder, because that is a high threshold. However, I hate that I doubted it because Vega's writing and style certainly blew me away with her debut Haunted. This is a book to read in the daylight or a one to read to scare you just enough that you'll sleep with an extra light on and your bedroom door closed. Don't be alarmed, this has just enough spooky-ness to it that it will get your nerves going and make you wonder about the noises in the dark at night, but it is a thrilling tale through and through. This is definitely for fans of Stephen King and Grady Hendrix, even if you don't regularly read YA.

In at the Deep End - A Review

This is one of those seemingly heartfelt stories that girls of their youth (in high school, graduating high school, or beginning their adult journey) need to read at some point. This book has a resonating factor that allows for its readers to connect to the story and know they're not alone. Trust me, adulting is not all it's cracked up to be. Discovering yourself in your early twenties is the most stressful time, but still the most enjoyable, so there's no need to stress unnecessarily.  Whether or not you read YA regularly, if you like Bridget Jones-like stories, this one is for you and all the others out there.

Little Darlings - A Review

This was a miraculous debut novel and I was blown away when I learned that this was Golding’s first novel. This is one of those books that has you second-guessing yourself (and Lauren) until the very end. As a mother, nothing is more frightening than losing your child(ren). But to have them replaced by monsters that only you can see? That’s enough to drive someone mad. I really felt for Lauren, relating to her in a way I didn't quite expect. Sometimes we need a little bit of darkness in the stories that we read, to capture us and bring out our fears, and this certainly does both. This book is for fans of fairy tales and those that are not afraid to dive into the dark side. The writing was absolutely superb and Golding is promising for anything she may write in the future.

The Gillespie County Fair - A Review

While this doesn’t necessarily have a focus on or contain a magical element, it greatly reminds me of the Night Circus. Two families are joined together, giving Texas w headstrong young girl. This also brings together a demise of one part of the story and the blossom of another part of the story. A family is torn and distraught with the town glows brightly with promise, intrigue, and happiness. This is one of those books for those that like seeing a grand end come from nothing, while also capturing the attention of those, like myself, who enjoy turmoil (sorry characters of all the books I read, I can’t help it!). The writing in this book weaves a tale intricately, enough to keep you going until the last page, sighing when you close the cover because the story’s over.

Mother Knows Best - A Review

I'm always going to jump the gun when it comes to reading psychological thrillers. Rarely am I disappointed because it's just such a great genre. And that's what I did for this book. I jumped the gun at the first sentence, "Claire's dreams became a nightmare when she passed on a genetic mutation that killed her little boy." If that doesn't suck you in as a fan of psychological thrillers, or one jumping into the genre, I don't know what will. The trio of Claire, her husband, and their doctor, set out to create an illegal experiment meaning to elimiate inherited diseases. After the doctor is left to serve a prison sentence and Claire (pregnant) and her husband escape by the skin of their teeth, there's a time jump. After 10 years, Jillian finally gets out and she wants revenge and what's "rightfully" hers. Read it, devour it, savor it.

Bluff - A Review

Bluff is definitely one of those "un-put-downable" books, especially for crime fans. Usually, we see the main role of a character from a male's perspective, and that is what sets this novel apart from others of its kind. The true hero, or should we say "heroine," of this story goes beyond what we have come to expect as far as enjoyment of characters goes. The writing for this novel was intricately woven, and even at some of the spotty bits--every book has them--it still kept me entertained. The characters were some that I could feel for, really relate to (in a fictional sense, even if by only my imagination), and wanted to see their story to the end of the book. This has the perfect amount of twists and entertainment, giving a new enjoyment to the crime fiction genre.

The Chronicles of a Radical Hag - A Review

If the title of the book doesn't grab you, the content will. I've never read anything by Lorna Lanvik before this book, but I'll certainly start now. Her background in stand-up and improvisational comedy certainly shines through this book from start to finish. This is a unique story, sharing stories from Haze's column in the past. Not only do you get the true feel of Haze as if she were your best friend, but the cast of characters touched by the Granite Creek Gazette, especially Susan and Sam. The writing within certainly captures your interest and make for a quick read, simply because you don't want to put it down until you know what's going to come up next. I read this in one sitting and would do it over again if I could.

An Improbable Pairing - A Review

Upon finding this book, it immediately drew me in. It was like there was a magnetic pull between me and the book--especially its characters--that drew me in and didn't let me go. Rarely am I one to enjoy historical fiction set in the 60s (it's a personal quirk of mine), simply because the time period doesn't interest me as far as telling fictional stories go. However, this was one of those books that exceeded my expectations and made me appreciate what I once disliked, and see it in a new light. The first impression I got from this was that it had a little "Downton Abbey" feel to it, if only slightly, and the rest just seemed to fall into place. This was one of those books that I'll think of for a long time to come, and honestly, this would be the best Valentine's Day read.

This book contains high-quality pictures and graphics of collectible cards, along with their worth. What I would have given for a book like this with Pokemon cards in the early 2000s. The pages in the book are high quality and in full color with a matte finish. The book is thick and sturdy, so it is perfect for carrying around with you, especially when you're on the hunt for cards and wanting to know what's worth getting and what isn't when you're out at comic book and table card game stores. If you're a fan or a collector, you need this book on hand.
