Illustrations i did last year for Ms. Wang Chu Qiao’s children book “Up”

being inspired by the power of children books has put a last minute twist on the assignment. Here I'm exploring and being inspired by the simplicity yet captivating visuals many children books can have. Most graphics look sketch like and dreamy. I really love the loose and transparent use of water colour it makes the graphics look playful and child like.

slowly getting my stuff from this semester scanned! a collection of fungi for my childrens book class, illustrating a non-fiction story i wrote about different types of “ologies” – this one being for mycology, the study of fungi :)

Assessment 3 - Zoe using her skills in fine freehand pen drawing created the hair on the young boy. The end result is highly effective and realistic. Watercolour was again used on the t-shirt. The deep red contrasted against with the pale blue background is great in ensuring the focal point and attention is on the young boy.

Assessment 3 - Again using the plastic wrap technique we decided to watercolour a full A2 page, so that we could use this visual piece as a background for the story within the child’s book. So that the book is coherent as a whole.

Assessment 3 - Process shots of the development of the background. The background was the first step in creating our artwork of the young child on the beach. Using a range of water colours, coupled with a few techniques of salt dying and plastic wrap led to a delicate and layered aesthetic of the sea behind him.

Uncreativity: we used Isabel's wire art work from her previous class and twisted a dead grass root into it The future: nature being over rided by man made structures and being lost. We have referenced the wire as power lines, and humanities technological desires, over sustaining the natural environment

Artist statement

The Forbidden Fruits

 I am revisiting one of the foundational narratives of desire focussing on the forbidden fruit in the Old Testaments Adam and Eve. My body of work aims to revitalize the biblical narrative in a contemporary and symbolic manner in relation to my own desires in a modern context. I’ve used a vibrancy and multi media techniques to steer away from the black and white nature of the bible and give each viewer the opportunity to make there own interpretations of desire and its consequence at there own individual preference. I’ve approach this ancient narrative with no religious bias but with prospect to only to analyse the story in relation to my ideals of desire and consequence today

In a cropped close up self-portrait I’ve placed myself in a similar consciousness and circumstance to Eve in what would be the defining moments before biting into “forbidden fruit.” A circumstance where I personally weighed out my deepest desires with what I have to gain along side what I have to loose. The process allowed me to distingue between what are my honest desires? What desires have been forced upon me? And what desires are confided by fear and can I defeat that fear?

In this portrait I’ve decided upon minimal detail and mediums, using only blue Biros and watercolor to create a highly diverged piece in which directs the audience to look at just a few certain points of detail. I’ve aimed to create movement and a sense of active thought through the rhythmic energy of my hair. Simplicity and void of emotion is evident across the face. The true indication of what could be desired is captured in the eyes as they gaze onto the next page.

On this page (to the left) I’ve included two crop compositions. Firstly, In the background I’ve symbolized the Garden of Eden with a highly saturated and surreal approach. I’ve used mass amounts of colors and an array of techniques. Each flower has been applied using hand made rubber stamps and watercolor. Drips of paint and gold leafing also help to depict the other elements of earth within a garden.

 It is in the next frame placed on top and in the centre that I’ve symbolised the “forbidden fruits” (traditionally believed to contain the knowledge of good and evil). I’ve avoided replicating the forbidden fruit in a literal sense to encourage a further questioning of its significance, purpose and value. I have used polymer bake clay (Fimo) to created a whirlpool of colours that embody modern truths and desires. I came to ask myself if I was to bite into a “forbidden fruit” what truths would I want to know? And if I could would I choose to know? As humans we want what we can’t have but when we attain these desires we can easily forget why we wanted it in the first place or not even want it at all.

Another Adam and Eve version I made this week, again based on a engraving by Dürer from 1504. The project is now finished and I’m very pleased with the results.
