"Men's sexuality is visually oriented women's sexuality is relationally oriented" I really resent the idea women don't care about looks or the idea that women prioritizing warm relations and emotional safety over looks is "natural". Maybe hetero men should get systemically raped and sexually violated for 10,000 years and then we check back to see if they are still only primarily visually oriented or if they start caring about good relations and warm, safe feelings more too. Men just being able to focus on what aesthetically pleases them sexually is not "natural", it's a privilege afforded by social domination and having less to worry about safety wise.

Whenever I see a therapist as an adult, I tell them I grew up in a shitty family and give them examples of what I mean and they say "Hm. Yes. That is exceptionally shitty parenting that could go a long way towards explaining why you are the way that you are."

I also saw a LOT of therapists when I was a child, all chosen by my parents of course. And none of them ever suggested that my upbringing might be anything less than ideal or told my parents that they were the ones needed to change.

It is difficult for me to make sense of this discrepancy in a way that makes therapy as a profession look good. The most charitable explanation is that my parents consciously or subconsciously sought out therapists who would agree with them. But frankly the explanation I keep coming back to is "therapists make a living by yes-anding whoever is giving them money; they don't actually have any special insight into the human condition and the belief that they do is dangerous".

I wonder how much of the bipolar zombie effect is because of the meds (which no doubt play a role) and how much of it is society's enforcement of pure neutrality for bipolar people.

when you're bipolar you aren't allowed to be wild, reckless, and joyful- that's too close to mania. you're becoming manic. you aren't allowed to take risks- that's going to drive you into mania. you can't be manic.

people attempt to micromanage your emotions to ensure your "safety" and in the process stifle all of them. you're threatened by the people around you with hospitalization, you have your autonomy taken away. you have your core self denied to you by the people around you all in the name of protecting you.

after you are denied your dignity of risk for months, years, decades you begin to crawl into yourself. you are not allowed you are not allowed you are not allowed you are not allowed you are not allowed over and over and over and over and over again.

"you are becoming manic. you can't do that." you are not becoming manic but you know that your protests will fail. in fact, they will be used against you. "only a manic person would be this determined to do this despite the risk, despite me saying no. I know what's best for you" they say.

when they don't think you're manic they're invested in keeping you that way. no disturbance to your perfectly kept schedule, your stable schedule, the stable schedule that's supposed to keep you stable.
