If you haven’t watched the mob psycho dub then at least watch this, please.
(Also, support the mob psycho 100 dub on funimation!)
ONE, walking into the studio: hey whats up guys, how the animation’s going
BONES animators, frantic to hide all Reigen nudes: hi, hiya buddy, how’re you, its going good, good, peachy amazing splendid,,
he was,,,, called out
Mob Psycho subverts the shonen genre by making the focus of mob not on his power, but on himself, which is something i really love about the show. The growth in skills he experiences has nothing to do with psychic abilities, but instead, with something else entirely.
Mob starts out as an awkward, uncharismatic kid. He isn’t able to read the room. He doesn’t know how to get his point across. He isn’t able to articulate his thoughts and feelings.
Reigen being mob’s mentor, but not being a psychic, seems to go against everything you would expect from an Anime mentor figure. I mean, how is he supposed to help mob as a mentor if he can’t train him to better use his powers? But the truth is, Reigen is the perfect mentor for Mob. Unlike in other shows where purpose of the Mentor is to teach the main character to improve their powers, Reigen exists to help Mob grow in other ways. Mob is a character that needs to improve his ability to connect with other people. This is something that reigen is able to teach him. Reigen is charismatic, diplomatic, and good at reading people. In this sense, he is the person best fit to “train” Mob. He’s the perfect mentor figure for what Mob needs.
I also loved that the climax of the first season did not end, as many anime seasons do, with Mob fighting and beating the villians to a pulp. Instead, Mob transfers his powers to Reigen, so Reigen can stand in his place and succeed where he could not: in persuading the villians to change their ways. Mob isn’t a character that tries to win fights by sheer force of power. Instead, he usually tries to convince the opposing person to see the error in their philosophy, and to change themselves. In the beginning of the first season, he’s not really good at it. He’s not able to convince Teru to stop attacking him, he’s not able to stop the psycho cult. He ends up having to resort to using his psychic powers, despite the fact he would much rather not. As the show progresses, It’s not Mob’s powers that grow, but his ability to change people’s perspectives.
This scene right here. This is where I really realized just how much Mob had grown. He’s so- so eloquent. He’s able to argue and defend his point of view. Its more than just a simple, “You shouldn’t rely on your psychic powers.” He is able to articulate and explain to the grunts exactly why it is that they, even as espers, still need to rely on others. Something about this speech had such a Reigen feel to it. It reminded me so much of the speech Reigen makes to the Scars at the end of Season 1.
I feel that throughout this season Mob is growing, but not in power. He’s growing in confidence, learning to better articulate his thoughts, learning how to better connect with people. THAT’S the real power he’s learning to hone.
And for that growth I feel so proud of him.
Mob as a character has grown so much since the first season. And honestly? I just can’t wait to see how he grows throughout the rest of the show.

Some Photoshop Tips
I’ve been getting quite a few asks about the process for the patterns in my stylized artworks, so I decided to put together a couple of tips regarding them.
Firstly, what you need are
— CUSTOM BRUSHES —
Most of the patterns I use are custom brushes I made, such as those:
For the longest time I was convinced making brushes must be super extra complicated. I was super extra wrong. All you need to start is a transparent canvas (2500px x 2500px max):
This will be your brush tip. When you’re satisfied how it looks, click Ctrl+A to select the whole canvas and go to ‘define brush preset’ under the edit menu
You will be asked to name your new glorious creation. Choose something that describes it well, so you can easily find it between all the ‘asfsfgdgd’ brushes you’ve created to be only used once
This is it. Look at it, you have just created a photoshop brush. First time i did I felt like I was cheated my whole life. IT’S SO EASY WHY HASN’T ANYONE TOLD ME
Time to edit the Good Boi to be more random, so it can be used as a Cool Fancy Pattern. Go into brush settings and change whatever you’d like. Here’s a list of what I do for patterns:
- under Shape Dynamics, I increase Size Jitter and Angle jitter by 5%-15%
- under Brush Tip Shape, I increase spacing by a shitload. Sometimes it’s like 150%, the point is to get the initial brush tip we painted to be visible.
- If I want it to look random and noisy, I enable the Dual Brush option, which acts like another brush was put on top of the one we’ve created. You can adjust all of the Dual Brush options (Size, Spacing, Scatter, Count) as you wish to get a very nice random brush to smear on your backgrounds
The result is as above. You can follow the same steps to create whatever brush you need: evenly spaced dots that look like you painted them by hand, geometric pattern to fill the background, a line of perfectly drawn XDs and so on.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE
— PATHS —
But what if you want to get lots of circles made of tiny dots? Or you need rows of triangles for your cool background? Photoshop can do all of that for you, thanks to the magic of paths.
Typically, paths window can be found right next to Layers:
Draw whatever path you want, the Shape Tool has quite a bit of options. Remember, paths are completely different from brush strokes and they won’t show up in the navigator. To move a path around, click A to enable path selection tool. You can use Ctrl+T to transform it, and if you move a path while pressing Alt it will be duplicated.
Now, pick a brush you wish really was in place of that path you’ve drawn and go to layers, then choose the layer you want it to be drawn on. Then, click this tiny circle under the Paths window:
Then witness the magic of photoshop doing the drawing for you while you wonder how tf have you managed to forget about this option for the past 2 years
You can combine special brushes and paths for all sorts of cool effects. I mostly use them in backgrounds for my cards, but you can do whatever you want with them.
I hope that answers the questions for all of the people who were sending me inquires about the patterns. If you have any questions regarding this or any other Photoshop matter feel free to message me, I’m always up for complaining about how great and terrible Photoshop is C’:
So all I’m saying is FUCK ENGLISH PAPER 2. That’s all.
