12 Days of Holtzmann - Snow!
Ok, several days late, but I wrote a little something to try to keep the @12daysofholtzmann thing going, cause I thought the fics were cute!
So this is Day 6 - First Snow
‘And finally, it looks to be an unseasonably warm finish to December this year, Jim – how’s the winter weather looking?’
Disappointed, you turned off the TV, not wanting to hear about the unusual sunny spells and mild temperatures gracing NYC, sure it was great for everyone else, travelling would be easy, outside would not be viciously cold. But for you, the only thing you wanted this year was being denied to you. You wanted the cliché: the picture-postcard Christmas. The Winter Wonderland. The SNOW.
It was your first Christmas in New York and first away from home. This was the year you had actually accomplished things: you’d graduated; you’d taken a massive leap of faith and moved to your dream city. You might have lived off nothing but you’d made it work. You’d even (eventually) managed to snag yourself an amazing job: working for the Ghostbusters. You’d started as an general assistant (or as Abby labeled you ‘Kevin Wrangler’), but over the year they had trusted you with bigger jobs and more responsibilities; now you ran the website, held the grand title of ‘Buster Dispatcher’, and tried your best to check the equipment in, and out, of the firehouse.
Where Abby, Patty and Erin were paragons of armoury safety, Holtzmann, you had rapidly deduced, was a danger to society and very possibly humanity. So far she had reliably informed you that, safety lights, post-accident medicals and not being allowed to carrying around the super-dangerous-totally-untested-probably-unstable-and-most-definitely-nuclear-proton-weaponry, were for dudes.
Even now, on Christmas Eve, she was perched on a swivel chair with one foot up on her desk, blowtorch left running perilously close to setting her toes on fire. The new equipment in front of her was forgotten, her soldering iron acting as a microphone as she energetically mimed whatever song was blaring through her new headphones. It had been a long day. You moved to large window in the lab, staring at the sky, willing it to be a dark purple: the promise of snow. But no, twinkly stars shone back at you from the clear, beautiful, midnight blue above. Mocking you. Stupid sky.
Holtz caught you pouting. Still dancing, she tried detangling herself from her spaghetti confusion of wires. She tripped in an enthusiastic arabesque, knocking over the soldering kit AND the blowtorch;
Flames quickly spread in front of your eyes. Erin almost moved quicker, fire extinguisher in her hand and an unsurprised and unperturbed expression on her face. Patty got up, rubbing the large 3.5 off of her ‘Day’s Without A Fire’ board and replaced it with 0.
‘Damnit Holtzy, you were on a record baby! I knew I shoulda bought you wireless…’ She rolled her eyes and settled back into the history book she had been studying.
‘It’s supposed to be SECRET Pats’ she stuck her tongue out, giving herself the once over. Carefully putting her now singed equipment to one side, Holtz slinked over to your side.
‘The brightest one is the Dog Star’ she pointed out the window ‘but you know him better as Sirius…’ Her hand reached for your own Secret Santa present, a charm bracelet with a tiny Deathly Hallows trinket, and smiled. ‘What’s up, buttercup?’
‘I just… I just wanted it to snow. That image of New York at Christmas, you know… I’ve dreamed of that – Christmas is shopping, hot chocolate, ice-skating, more shopping and walking through Central Park in the snow…’ You paused; Holtz had a funny look on her face, holding back a smile? A laugh? Or a smirk? ‘Fine. I know it’s cheesy, but back home we don’t get snow all that often, and never at Christmas. It was the final thing on my list that would have made this year perfect.’ You were pouting again and that was the final straw.
Holtzmann let out a giggle and came straight at you, poking your sides ‘awww my little tourist!’ She stepped it up, tickling you and reciting ‘let it snow’ at the top of a silly singsong voice.
‘No Jillian, I’m not in the mood’, you huffed and pushed her away. You were done with today, tired from work, tired from Christmas prep, and now you were completely, and rather irrationally upset with Holtz for laughing at you. The silence that followed was a little too deafening, even the radio had stopped. You never first named the good doctor, and really, you’d never refused her attention. The other girls were staring and you already felt stupid. It was time to go home. Grabbing your coat and waving, you simply left.
*************************************************************
Your bed was comfy, warm, and your place to wallow and think. You’d been there 3 hours so far. You didn’t mean to be so sharp with Holtz, she was only trying to cheer you up… Jillian Holtzmann: mad, reckless, obscenely intelligent, absurdly dressed yet perfectly coordinated, beautiful Holtzmann. Wait, did you call her beautiful? You shook your head, trying to clear it of her, Holtzmann wasn’t the problem… Even if she did think you were silly and mean for shouting and didn’t like you anymore… That was fine. You were annoyed because you’d tried really hard, that was all. They’d all been so good to you that you had put a lot into making the ending to this year perfect for everyone. You’d started the secret santa so everyone would get presents, you had been shopping with Abby… and Patty… and Erin… and Kevin! You’d even dragged Holtz out but never again. Not unless you had bribery snacks… You’d admittedly almost broken a Ghostbuster or two on the ice skating rink but you’d bought hot chocolate to warm them up again after. All you needed was the snow. But if Holtzy thought you were silly, the other girls must too, so what was the point?!
You wrapped your duvet around you like a burrito and curled up on your windowsill, staring at the stars again. You found Sirius and made a little wish, that they’d forget today had happened, that you could go back after Christmas and all would be fine… and maybe that a small blond doctor would forgive you and come back to…
‘You can see it better from the roof you know, you escape some of the light pollution’
You jumped so violently you fell off your perch, landing with a heavy and muffled thud on the floor. You peeked out from the duvet, spying biker boots and mismatched socks, before a mass of curls and an upsidedown crazyface filled your view.
‘Um ma’am, are you aware that duvet dwelling is against the rules of Hide and Seek?’ With a surprising amount of strength she whipped it off you and threw it on the bed ‘due to excessive cheating, I am afraid you are disqualified from the game. Please get your shoes on and come with me. Oh, and you’ll need a coat’
Completely thrown, you complied without question. Why not… She was waiting for you by the door of your apartment, ‘How did you even get in?!’ She grinned waving a spare key at you. ‘When did you…’ She stuck a finger to your lips to shush you, and then took your hand. She took you to the top of the building and turned to you at the fire escape.
‘UGH!’ She flounced behind you and clamped her hands over your eyes, guiding you forward.
The crisp night air hit you with a chill, you shivered and Holtz came in a little closer. She was like a little beacon of warmth. The butterflies that had been stilled by guilt were now fluttering in your stomach. You were getting part of your wish then… She stopped without warning and you bounced back against her strong grip,
‘Oop, my bad. Right. Keep your eyes SHUT ok? No sneaky peaking!’
You felt her leave your side, damn… it was colder without her… You heard a machine start up, an engine? No… a fan maybe… You hoped she wouldn’t take much longer, you thought you felt a spot of rain… there was another… oh quite a few spots actually…
You blinked. It wasn’t raining… it was snowing! The rooftop was covered in white, powdery, perfect looking snow! Stunned, you turn to Holtz, who was adjusting the large home-made looking snow machine… And you were hit in the face with a large snowball.
‘Gotchya baby!’ Patty enveloped you in a hug. Over her shoulder you spied Abby and Erin making a snowman by the vents. ‘I think Holtzy felt a little bad. Anyone who’s been near you this month has gotten the whole sparkly Christmas treatment… She didn’t mean to upset you’ she brushed the snow out of your hair and smiled kindly, ‘you might not see it all the time, but Holtz really cares about you. She’s just a little…’
‘LET IT BE KNOWN THE WEATHERMAN WAS WRONG. I AM THE COMMANDER OF SNOW’
Holtzmann was stood in a victorious power stance, two fingers placed to her forehead and a triumphant grin on her face. You looked from her, to Erin, Abby and their wonky snow…ghost?, to Patty and the now blanketed roof. You strode straight to her and hugged her. Tight.
‘You did it’ You mumbled into her shoulder,
‘You made it perfect.’ She tried to pull back but you weren’t letting go, she submitted and just pulled you tighter. ‘I’m sorry for pushing you. And first naming you. And being mean. I’m sorry.’ You let go and looked into her perfect blue eyes… which she promptly rolled.
‘Pshh. Sorry for my lack of universal atmospheric control, I am trying. Oh! And for the mess. I don’t actually know how degradable this snow is. I knocked the whole thing up after you left. Sooooo it might be here a while…’ She shuffled her feet in the now ankle deep powder. ‘Actually I might just…’
She leapt to the machine’s kill switch, but the remaining snow continued to fall. Those butterflies were fluttering around in your stomach again as you watched her. Maybe it was you with the problem… and she might just be your solution…
‘Hey come on you guys! Come here’ Erin beckoned you both to the building side, she’d set up her camera ‘Quick it’s on a timer!’
You both joined them and smiled just in time for the flash to go off. Patty inspected the results, and handed the phone to you nodding approvingly. You couldn’t help but smile: you, with your four best friends on a rooftop, the New York cityscape behind you, and snow swirling in the air, caught by the winter breeze. ‘It’s perfect’ you grinned – ‘my first winter snow!’
Hope you enjoyed… I might do more if this is ok!! Thanks to @12daysofholtzmann for the idea and lovely feedback! Ace xx
