below the cut is a lengthy commentary & meta analysis of holmes' exercise practice.

psa before reading : first of all, it should be noted that holmes does not own a shinken / katana . he owns an iaito. a shinken is a weapon, when handled unprofessionally it can hurt passerby's as well as the handler, author is also noting that shinken/katana sword when in hands of a white person feels a bit of appropriation for japanese culture. where as iaito is a tool for practice. and the practice involves heavy calisthetic exercise and learning the correct history of japan as well as the language. let's not be weebs :)

𝙷𝙾𝙻𝙼𝙴𝚂' 𝙸𝙰𝙸𝚃𝙾 : it is custom made, as is every iaito sword for the sword practitioner; like every iaito, the blade ( called 'ha' ) is dull. not sharp. and the blade itself is made from aluminum & zinc . making it extremely fragile and can shatter upon striking contact . the saya ( the sheath ) of his iaito is grainy and dark gray, looking like constellations shattered across the sky; the sageo ( 2nd pic, the ties ) is dark blue, noting his favorite color, as well as the tsuka wrapping ( the handle ). at the kashira ( the end of the handle ) is a jewelled silver bee to note his similarity with the dragonfly philosophy of japan, but still making it personal to his own iaito.

holmes is 3rd dan ( black belt times three ) in iaido, which disallows him from using a shinken, as he needs to mature and do better practice while passing his 4th dan trials. ( shinken is allowed on 5th dan pass, if the senior sensei / teacher allows it, but holmes has taken a liberty in not passing his 4th dan exams and stays as a senpai in his dojo. a senpai in dojo is "the eldest student" showing exemplary behavior to younger students and the youth and teaching the etiquette to newcommers. holmes is 1 dan ( first black belt ) in kendo and owns a full black set of bogu ( kendo armor )

during his hiatus, holmes did live in japan, alongside his inability to return to london, he was also grieving his sensei from passing. holmes has been doing iaido for around 10 years in the same london dojo, there were definitely connections he's made that he still appreciates. while living in japan, holmes joined the extended family of his sensei to help with garden work where he first learned about bee-keeping and he was "adopted" in the family as 'Daichi' a name given to him, by his sensei's grand-niece, simply because the little girl could not pronounce Sherlock Holmes. Daichi だいち (hiragana) and 大地 (kanji) means the name of "big - great - land - wisdom" ; so he full-time adopted the name of Daichi-San while living in japan. While practicing iaido in the family's home, Holmes would use a picture of Watson, Mycroft, violin strings & a piece of linen cloth as his shomen ( dojo's fighting spirit that you give respect to before every practice and entering / leaving the dojo )

Holmes knows all 12 kata ( exercise practices ) of Iaido. His favorites are Ushiro & Ganmenate. Iaido helps Holmes medidate and not blame himself for things he could not control.

the thing with holmes joining a band . . especially after almost overd*sing, it's not the most out of a random thing he would do for a case or for gaining knowledge, zach really saved the man, so holmes owes him big time . you have to remember holmes stayed in a swamp for a case, got literally engaged to a woman to get information on a villain he despises more than m*riarty, tests a nerve agent on himself . this man's sheer free will has made him very reliable to others . why wouldn't he join a metal band to get superior for a case . or for anything else .

HE  WAS  UP  SINCE  FIVE  IN  THE  MORNING,  and  in  a  stagnatingly  good  mood:  a  short  exchange  with  his  beloved  landlady  while  exiting  in  the  doorway  has  put  him  in  the  strategy  of  doing  some  light  cleaning  and  the  kitchen.  holmes  in  his  old  fashion  clothes  decorated  with  an  apron  preparing  onigiri  &  coffee  &  cutting  up  some  figs.  The  plain  linen  apron  had  been  tied  with  a  knot  that  betrayed  a  cold  automaton  figure  with  domestic  costume,  when  his  deft  fingers  started  to  shape  leftover  cold  rice  in  a  rounded  triangle  &  pack  the  very  center  of  it  with  a  made  mixture  of  cold  chunks  of  yellowfin  tuna  assorted  alongside  cucumber  and  sriracha,before  he  put  the  final  tie  of  nori  on  it  &  set  it  on  the  morning  table  in  a  royal  house  precision. the  ripe figs lay  before  him  on  the  wooden  board,  which  he  lessened  to  neat  halves  &  quarters  with  the  same  exactitude  he  employed  when  dissecting  a  fragment  of  chemical  compounds.  the  same  blade  ornamented  in  meadow  flowers  was  held  in  his  hand  when  holmes  heard  the  kettle  sing  on  the  stove,  leaving  it  aside  to  brew  the  coffee  :  the  room  immediately  was  filled  with  the  rich  fragrance.  by  7:30  holmes  has  smoked  a  total  of  two  cigarettes  althewhile  forgetting  to  remove  the  linen  apron  &  only  shed  his  ash  in  a  seashell  shaped  ashtray as he saw a familiar face join him in their living room. "  mrs.  hudson  has  departed  out  of  the  city  to  visit  her  sister i  therefore  took  it  upon  myself  to  prepare  breakfast  .  .  .  " with  one  of  the  two  porcelain  cups  he  filled  his  own  with  coffee  which  he  then  supplied  with  a  bottle  of  5-hour-energy.  holmes  has  broken  the  seal  with  his  thumbnail  &  emptied  the  liquid  contents  into  the  waiting  coffee. HE THEN STIRRED HIS CUP OF COFFEE PRECISELY THREE TIMES & added no sugar to its contents, before taking an elegant sip which made his thin lips churn against its taste & finally gestured watson to join him at the table and encourage him to eat ."I  WAS  MEANING  TO  ASK,  any  personal  affairs  prosper  on  your  end,  @inbelief  ?  tell  me  ."

while the sunlight entered the room, holmes leaned in a polite manner : "feast, my dear friend."
