right now a big focus in stranger things is a wrinkle in time. in a wrinkle in time, a guy possessed by a cosmic evil [charles wallace] is saved not by logic or strength, but by love [from meg] — the one thing the evil can’t understand or control. that possessed boy is thematically connected to will. the abyss being “The Black Thing” [the source of all evil] , vecna being “The Man with Red Eyes” [the puppet] and “It” [a brain like entity] being the mindflayer. It directly mirrors what is happening in stranger things.
mike has never met an openly queer person. he doesn’t know what being queer with acceptance looks like. so will coming out, and then will almost dying or being fully possessed, would be VERY important — because in that moment, love being the thing that saves will directly mirrors a wrinkle in time.
