This is a place for me to collect my thoughts, art, and musings on Deltarune and Spamton.
Do not take anything I say as my stance on the actual canon as I cannot assume what Toby Fox means-- it is purely my interpretation and design/writing exercise.
There was a new stress mechanic added to the game. Many things caused stress (taking damage, getting too close to certain objects, etc.) But only blue things would relieve it. Pipis were a thing and would reduce stress by a lot, but you had to break them and it was really hard.
If stress got to 100%, the game would glitch out and get a "scary" filter over it (so like, static, "ghosts", corpses, etc.) And it would become nearly unplayable until you lowered your stress.
Getting stress to 100% would spawn Mike who would chase you. Mike was a human head, looked like a game show host, and wore glasses similar to Spamton's. He was the secret boss of the chapter and could easily TPK your team if fought too early.
The stress you were managing was Spamton's, so if you didn't defeat him in Chapter 2 and get his item, you would not experience this whatsoever.
I was chatting with a friend earlier and a few days ago and came up with two possible AUs for Spamton. Spoilers for both main playthroughs.
Pacifist/normal playthrough where Kris fills their inventory to prevent Spamton from joining them. Kris (or the Player) abandons Spamton in the chest and continues the adventure.
He would have to leave the chest eventually and may end up in Castle town anyways (lumped in with the other real-world items from the computer lab. He might be considered recruited at this point or maybe be one of the challenges in the Dojo later on. However, he's a little freer in this scenario and still retains the knowledge from being NEO. Potential EX version? Maybe still a trash gremlin?
Snowgrave/Other playthrough, but the Player abandons it after clicking on the basement.
Here, Spamton gets to stay NEO and the Cyberworld fountain remains open.
He's BIG! A BIG SHOT!
Oh SO BIG!
1. He remains NEO. Doesn't just remember it, he is it. He's a God! No one can close the portal!
2. The rest of Cyber World is also stuck with him.
3. Do the other Lighteners escape?
4. Eventually he has to realize he basically made himself exactly as free as Jevil: locking himself away in a place he can do what he wants?
Even if Spamton got the [HeartShapedObj], he would at that point be the Player's puppet. He still would not have gotten what he wanted.
But here's the thing: The Player also doesn't have the power he's seeking. The Player, as an object within the game, also isn't free.
They're bound by what is coded in the game. We see this whenever we're railroaded via plot/story from one area to another. There are times where our ability to choose is taken away (often by Susie, sometimes by Kris). Also, just by game design. Even if we hack the game to break through barriers, the world often just ends there-- further content wasn't coded into the game, so our ability to explore more is cut short.
Despite being an eldritch time god in comparison to a Lightener or Darkener, the Player isn't all-powerful either.
So, one of my big projects is a sci-fi/fantasy anthology called "Moonlit Path." I have a few stories available on Wattpad and I have a bit of information about it on my other side-blog.
One of the species in this world are the Delphteans. They're a race of amphibious fish people that are recovering from nearly being wiped out. They're bouncing back and as a Kingdom are fairly wealthy due to having exclusive access to deep sea pearls, special sea salts, etc. However, they tend to be reckless to a fault.
Which is perfect Big Shot grounds for Spamton. Seriously, he'd make it big there because not many Delphteans care about malware and they love to shop.
But first, lemme talk about themes:
As a species, they all look very similar since they're for intents and purposes clones. They individualize through choices and environmental effects. They also put great importance on developing their skills since their society lacks experts. While their oldest are over 250 years old, their average lifespan is in their mid-20's due to their recklessness and rapid self-replication.
So (using tech left over from prior to the near-extinction event and a little bit of inherent ability known as Flow), the Delphteans save the skills of specific individuals and force it into vat grown clones to build on the skills. That way, they can have rapid deployment of fully trained doctors, computer experts, etc. to replace any that die. Those professions also frequently upload their skills to keep the database up-to-date.
This means, a huge percentage of the population are born as babies and blank slates. A much smaller percentage are essentially born as fully-fledged and educated adults with jobs that they were literally built to do.
So yeah, some Delphteans are pre-determined into their roles, whether they like it or not.
Enter TZ:
TZ is the last computer expert due to problems in the skills database and the memory merging process. However, he no longer officially works for the Kingdom due to self-exile due to failing to disable a highly complex security system while his friends were breaking into a warehouse. (This has also left him with a phobia for robots). He also has anxiety-driven pica with little regard of what it is he's eating. Comms devices, paintbrushes, his tie, napkins, coffee mugs, light bulbs, he's eaten nearly everything.
While he's insanely skilled with computers, his dream is to be the holonet's favourite stuntman.
In nearly every other interaction, he's super sweet and fearless. One of his boyfriends is infected with eldritch powers and the other is big and kind of a jerk and TZ has 0 nerves, just pure curiosity and acceptance.
However, he couldn't like Spamton, even if he wanted to.
1. Spamton kinda looks like a robot
2. He'd very quickly realize that Spamton's basically malware.
TZ doesn't have a hurtful bone in his body, but he'd be very concerned that everyone else likes Spamton. Also, Spamton would have the unique ability that if he ever snuck up on TZ, TZ would get spooked and hiss at him.
Usually Moody Bravo However:
Bravo is about 50 years old. She's a major BIG SHOT in Delphtean Society and is one of the few 2nd generation Delphteans still alive. Bravo is a hero, she's saved her people countless times with her wingsuit and grappling hook. (When your planet has titanic god-like serpents and their aggressive crocodilian worshipers that both have a taste for your species' flesh, you need a few heroes.)
Her fame rocketed her to the upper echelons of her society, complete with adoring fans, lots of money, and power. However, the stress of living as the perfect role model for her species wore her down and grew to hate it.
So, when TZ failed to shut down that security system, she faked her death and ran off-planet to the black-market-infested asteroids. She spends a few years getting blackout drunk, sleeping around, and getting into fights. She basically tore down her whole life to self-destruct because sometimes power just sucks man.
Bravo would wholeheartedly adore Spamton
"you're sellin' me potion little dude? Hell yeah."
"... I don't have Kromer, but I have credits?" She watches Spamton eat it and laughs. "Okay, where's the nearest ATM?"
Bravo is the type of person to choose to spend the night in a dumpster because "cool, why not?"
And she'd take his deals purely to see what happens, then take him to the bar afterward. She'd also explain that, honestly, money and power aren't really freedom. Sometimes, you just gotta go out and self-destruct a little and things'll be cool. (Bravo is not necessarily handling her lot in life well. But she thinks this is good advice.)
Lastly, FU:
She's a young cloned medic who everyone treats as if she was the previous medic. FU is an amazing surgeon and is fairly introverted. She typically wears a medical mask to hide her face (a trait she's had prior to current events). FU is softspoken and prefers to keep to herself, but she enjoys her job. Her hobbies include xenobiology (aka, non-Delphtean biology).
She'd 1000% try to convince Spamton to come in for a physical (I mean, how often have you met a living computer program that has a physical body? NEAT! And he produces eggs called pipis somehow?! This is entirely professional and any suggestion otherwise would upset her. FU is very repulsed by sex) and if he'd let her, they'd end up fast friends. (Also he's so little! And an adult! AWESOME!) I don't see him being enthusiastic about this.
Considering he probably has IBS and potentially other problems, she'd try her best to help him out. Even if she has to bring in TZ as a consult.
She would make deals with him, she's quite used to it and if it makes him happy, why not? She'd also try to help him out with his verbal tics and work through his self-loathing. She basically invented mental health care for the Delphteans, once she realized how ubiquitous it is in the clones.
-----
Essentially, he'd have friends in this universe, at least in one of the kingdoms. Some of my other OCs would also get a kick out of him. (Honestly, a pic of Ex engaging in a fight with his heart would be awesome. He just really likes fighting for fun.)
Another note about this universe is that the "common" Galactic internet is called the holonet and it's based on rainbows. Spamton would be sparkly here.
Hi gamers if you like deltarune you should know gross weirdos are starting to ship spamton and kris together so some tags to block are: kriston, krispam, and spamtis. If anyone has other tags to add to this feel free to add
"March 1997 was notable for the appearance of the āShareFunā macro virus for MS Word 6/7 which started a new chapter in computer history It became the first virus of its kind to spread using email, in particular MS Mail."
--source
Slight change to my headcanon (which, might actually be canon based on the previous post), 1997 was when Spamton was INFECTED.
I just replayed the first part of Chapter 2 again because I may stream the Snowgrave route for some friends and I caught something.
Virovirokun, the actual virus enemy, also talks about 1997. It's a very quick "Happy New Year 1997!" but, it's there. According to the wiki, this is a specific reference to Spamton.
Another note that one of the most notable features of Virovirokun are their rosy cheeks.
It might actually be canon that Spamton is the way he is initially due to being infected with malware.
Spamton's a bit of a chameleon- he tends to absorb the looks of the people he views as successful. It's a part of his design, so it's instinctive. This is why he resembles both the Addisons and Swatch. Phishing emails can be VERY good at looking legit, but often not so much.
Nothing's going to stop me from imagining that he eats most of his Kromer.
Spamton likes Swatch, Swatch doesn't like Spamton. (Something about impersonating their high-class cafe and selling counterfeit products. [I have something in mind to elaborate on this].)
He's able to manifest his wares (same as the Addisons). The negative side of it is that he can only spawn cheap knockoffs of what he's intending to. Hence why pipis are clams, not actual eggs. (Addisons can only spawn wares that have a catch to them. Like being impossibly expensive or utterly useless. Swatch and the Swatchlings actually make their wares.)
Spamton was born in 1978 (when the first spam email was sent out). He became infected with malware in 1999 (when the first email-borne virus was sent out. 1997 seems to have been a relatively quiet year in virus creation- perhaps it was his last year of ignorant bliss? (Or it was due to the Big Shot soda commercial. But, I'm focusing on the computer aspect).
This makes him much older than the Addisons (the first internet ads came out in 1994).
He's not quite an Addison but is considered a part of the family anyway.
While the Cyberworld Dark Fountain was an extremely recent occurrence, CyberWorld Darkeners are aware of full lives prior to the fountain's creation. For all intents and purposes, Cyberworld (and all other dark worlds) have existed long prior to their fountain. Maybe it's something like multi-verse theory and the fountain plucks the verse that most closely resonates with the wishes of the Knight or something. (This is somewhat suggested by the fact that some Darkeners seem to choose whether to go to Ralsei's castle or not).
He was semi-successful in sales until the 2000s, but the rates of success never reached the successes of the Addisons. So he was kind of a big shot until then.
This meant that he didn't start to "see" past his design until after he started to get desperate due to failure. He started to fail mostly due to his design, the malware, and the decline in Lightner's trust in email advertisements.
The malware gives him his glitchiness and verbal tics.
His personality has also disassociated into a couple distinct selves (This isn't split personality or DID and is not meant to reflect those real-world mental health issues.). His coded self (designed to sell, scam, and seek money [Kromer]) behaves differently from his aware self (focused on deals, wanting to break free, seeking choices).
Oh! and it's canon that he doesn't get the shadow crystal until he becomes NEO! Seam says it when you show him Spamton's crystal. So, he doesn't truly see the scope of his situation until he becomes NEO. He was probably told about the situation by the being on the phone (potentially Gaster, but idk), but didn't realize the real scope of it until he became NEO.
His attachment to capitalism is due to his coding. He left the castle once he realized that money=/=power in his struggle for freedom. Money doesn't grant him the ability to make actual choices and he is designed to seek money and its benefits.
Main blog (Asks will be coming from here): pendles-is-friendles
Personal blog (most activity): pendles-is-friendless
While I used to RP, I donāt have the time to commit to threads with others due to having a full-time job and working on my Anthology. However, I have a lot of thoughts about Spamton, so Iām just sequestering all of my Deltarune thoughts here instead of on my personal blog. I may add other character interpretations and art here too.
This is a writing, art, and general creative exercise.
2. No godmodding, obviously. This includes forcing me to accept your headcanons in my writing. Discussion is fun, but understand that I develop my muse my way, just as you do yours.
3.Ā Feel free to contact me through the askbox or messenger if there is a question, issue, and/or problem.Ā I wonāt bite, promise!
4.Ā While I donāt plan on exploring this with him: Sexy things are labeled with ācitrus cwā and reference to what level of citrus it is on the next tag.Ā Lime= No sex, but gets steamy, Lemon= fairly vanilla sex, kumquat= weird, unusual, what the heck (but like, not-necessarily-harmful.).Ā I try to stay away from dark NSFW themes like non-con, etc. Any NSFW images are handled off-site on an after-dark Twitter.
5.Ā I tend to keep things light, but dark themes such as violence, gore, trauma, etc. pop up in writing a lot. I keep my content warning tags simple, following the pattern of ātrigger cwā to help out with black listing.
6. None of this content are my thoughts as actual, real canon in Deltarune.Ā This isnāt theory-crafting and has no real basis on what I think Toby Fox was actually going for in the game. I will take whatever liberty I want as this is for fun. Iām sorry if this upsets you, but my content is probably not for you.
7. Do not repost or use my art or posts for personal or commercial uses without my express permission. I donāt care if itās for icons, headers, posts etc. If caught reposting on any site: I will block and report without hesitation.
8. Be excellent to each other.Ā Ā Like it or not, if I see you harassing others or generally being a jerk to others, we would not be a good fit and Iāll just block you. This includes things like using slurs, being a terf/racist/homophobic/etc, vague blogging excessively, harassment/hate campaigns, etc.Ā I donāt subscribe to the whole Pro vs. Anti debate but Iāll block people who create content that makes me uncomfortable. Iām not interested in being the arbiter of proper content- I just want to be comfortable.
Deltarune chapter 2 spoilers ahead and the topic is Spamton.
Headcanons?
Yes, I won't label these as theories. I am not going to pretend I know what's going on in Toby Fox's head or know the "truth." These are just connections bouncing around in my head. This is coming from someone who cleans up viruses and stuff from computers for a living and is intimately familiar with email.
What is Spamton?
Many of the citizens of Cyber World seem to represent some form of software, just not all (like Trashy is literally real trash can not a recycle bin icon, for instance). Some are obvious like Tasque Manager and others not as much like Swatch (art program).
Spamton is mentioned as originally being "Email" until "something changed". He's also associated with the Addisons, which are obviously, advertisements (though, different from pop-ups as they are depicted as monsters). Obviously, spam email is primarily some form of advertisement sent to email, usually full of scams and sometimes malware.
Spamton mostly got ignored as an ad, and probably like most junk mail probably got filtered out or manually put into the trash folder. There is SO much work put into an email server's junk mail filter to prevent it from ending up in people's inboxes-- this could be a reason why he was never successful?
On the Topic of Failure:
As a program, there's two things that can be concluded:
1. Even assuming that everything in the game is "real" in that the "player" isn't a thing at all and most characters have free will-- Spamton is a deterministic being and cannot break free from his designed purpose.
2. Spamton had no choice in what he was designed for.
And... he's not good at selling things. The game specifies that he tended to get ignored. How would one cope with failing at the one thing you can do?
I think he was aware of the strings of his design early on and could not cope with it. He tried to break free from it on his own, but he couldn't. He literally was incapable of doing it on his own.
Another big headcanony suspicion I have is that Spamton's glitchiness is due to something outside of the phone call and the shadow crystal; I think he has malware.
Why?
Data corruption, such as the kind brought about by malware, can cause programs to act in manners outside of their design. I think it helped him realize how powerless he is in his situation. It would also better explain his odd way of speaking ([hyperlink blocked]).
Over time, he became more and more desperate to become free, to become a [big-shot]. I think this explains his manic and random personality more than the phone calls/shadow crystal. Jevil also has an odd way of speaking (repeating himself a lot), but it made sense. It was clear and put together whereas Spamton's... a lot more lolrandom. Even his head glitches out periodically.
He still mostly fails at this and becomes increasingly deperate. Between the malware and the desperation, he becomes chaotic and pushy.
One of the things that draws me to this conclusion is his insistance that he wants to make deals, not money. He has to make and seek money because that's what he was designed to do. But deals are choices and are a reflection of some will of his own.
Until he starts getting those phone calls.
Suddenly! He's successful! He's selling a whole bunch of stuff and has a whole bunch of money! He has a room in the castle! He's a [Big Shot!]
But then something happened.
I think that either the person on the other side of the phone tried to get Spamton to do something or (more likely) gave Spamton enough awareness to realize that the entire world, not just Cyberworld, is a computer program. No one can break free from their deterministic fates. Despite his success, he has still failed to be an actual [big shot!] because he is still only doing what was pre-determined for him.
But... there is at least one being that can act of their own accord (kinda). Lightners! (at least, Kris). There's a lightner construct in the basement! He could use that and that soul and break free!
He tests Kris's ability to make choices through deals. There is a choice inherent to it- the "give kromer" side of things is to see if they reliably make the same choices.
I don't think he's aware of the player, otherwise, I think he would have changed tactics/wouldn't believe that he was becoming "god" by becoming NEO. The player is just another set of strings, after all. [or maybe chains]. (Kris is aware of the player which is why they're affected by the comment, but I think Spamton is referring to the game overall).
So, of course, he does what he thinks will help him break free-- tries to get Kris to help him.
He's... quite pushy with it and can hardly control his excitement and desperation. And as Kris follows his instructions, he becomes even more excited and forceful. This culminates in him threatening Kris for their soul in the underground as NEO after he realized that even with NEO, he was still trapped. He still can't break free.
He wants freedom! He needs it! Don't you see?!
(but if he kills Kris, the soul also dies. this is why I think he doesn't have the full picture yet. And how would he be able to make Kris big too? Granted that promise is most likely also a scam and he was going to kill them anyways?)
Now, why would he need a soul? It seems to grant free will and it might play a part in the whole fountain creation process. The Snowgrave route suggests he knows it plays a part in sealing the fountains and Queen speculates that perhaps any Lightner is capable of creating fountains and fountains allow one to create worlds.
(I also want to note, in the normal run, the fight with Spamton somewhat suggests he's able to affect the world around him. A city of Spamton faces passes by in the background. Maybe NEO, by virtue of being a Lightner creation, allows for some ability to control the fountain enough to change things? This is also suggested by him complaining about the fountain potentially being sealed while he was busy becoming a god.)
Naturally, he was destined to fail at this as well.
In the normal route, if you spare him he still dies (which makes me quite sad tbh). In Snowgrave, he is also destined to die.
It depends on how one views the whole player controls the game in terms of whether the universes end when we respawn or reset the save or if it spawns more and more universes. Undertale seems set in the former, which is why I view this as his ultimate fate.
The only difference between the two is that I don't think you get the Dealmaker in the Snowgrave route? Since the Dealmaker IS him and he is able to speak and act through it... he's kinda still alive?
(and by this logic, so is Jevil)
We have other characters that live in Kris's pocket and act of their own accord in it (Lancer and Rouxls Kaard)... maybe, he still has a role to play if you've picked him up?
In a conversation with some friends about Spamton's association with Mettaton due to NEO, someone pointed out that my theory has trans parallels.
ESPECIALLY with Mettaton's association.
Now, do I think Spamton G. Spamton, canon character of Deltarune is trans? Probably not. Or if he is, it's not important enough to the story to make explicit.
Am I going to headcanon the heck out of it in my own AU interpretation: fuck yeah I am. I'm all for transman short kings (as I am one myself). It would make an excellent motivation to become powerful enough to become a big [SHOT]. Good enough to tear apart the world into one's image.
It would also explain his focus on choices and deals instead of money.
Money means nothing if you can't do what you actually want with it.
