Review of “Nosedive”
I always love watching Black Mirror because each episode accurately depicts how people are deeply involved with technology or social media. The first episode of the third season, "Nosedive," is set in a world where people can rate each other from one to five stars, impacting their lives and status. For example, Lacie, the main character of this episode, fails to purchase an airplane ticket to her friend's wedding because she does not meet the rating requirement. Her obsession with the ratings makes her do everything she can do to boost up her ratings. When her friend with high ratings invites her to her wedding to deliver a speech as the maid of honor, she finds it as a chance to boost her ratings and does everything to attend the wedding. On her way to the wedding, several mishaps make people give her low ratings. After sneaking into her friend's wedding and threatening Mr. Rags with a knife, she eventually ends up in jail.
Even though not everyone will be this obsessed with social media, this episode accurately depicts social media's negative impact. People constantly compare their lives to those of celebrities or influencers on social media. We believe having an influential social media presence or an aesthetic Instagram feed makes us ultimately happy, but it is not true. We might feel a temporary boost from likes or comments, but it is not long-term. New social media platforms or even new technologies are going to come out in the future. However, people need to balance out their real lives and social media.
