The time that Ryan Ross was catfished by a fan pretending to be Brendon Urie (Masterpost)

In 2012, an obsessive Panic! at the Disco fan named Chelsey Lynn used the powers of the internet to forcibly insert herself into the lives of her favorite band members—most notably catfishing Ryan Ross for about nine months under the guise of being Brendon Urie. Yes, this really happened.

Chelsey was particularly obsessed with Brendon and Sarah, and she didn’t even like Ryan all that much. She ran several fan blogs about the Uries, which would often release pictures never before seen by the public. All the fans were loving it. After all, who doesn’t love new pictures? What they didn’t know is that Chelsey had gotten the pictures through deception, and it would soon get a lot worse.

She had hacked several accounts of people close to Brendon and Sarah Urie, and even made puppet accounts purporting to be their family members. She made spreadsheets and long documents on her computer listing their relatives, addresses, their relatives’ addresses, and other highly personal information. Many of their private photos ended up on Chelsey’s blogs. And sometime around September 2012, she hacked Shane Valdez’s Facebook account, which kept him locked out of it for over a month.

And through Shane’s account, Chelsey messaged none other than Ryan Ross and got his actual phone number. (For her part, Chelsey claims that she got Ryan’s phone number through one of his friends.)

She pretended to be Brendon, wanting to be rekindle their friendship (which had officially fractured sometime around 2010). Ryan was naively receptive to the idea, and began texting who he thought was his former best friend.

Chelsey was so obsessed with Brendon that she could mimic his speech patterns, to the point that Ryan was completely fooled. Of course, Ryan had no reason to doubt “Brendon’s” authenticity, and either way, he was going through a tough time in his life and needed emotional support wherever he could find it. Chelsey/”Brendon” also made a convincing fake Instagram account, which Ryan followed and regularly left comments on.

After about nine months (Chelsey claims it was six) of catfishing Ryan, which brings us to early August 2013, Chelsey began to regret her decisions and became depressed and suicidal. Several Tumblr users, most notably @dallonsmiles​ (AKA Hannah Bear), figured out what was going on with the Facebook accounts and got her to confess over Skype.

But in addition to owning up to her crimes, Chelsey also admitted to being in contact with Ryan, which no one knew about yet. She bragged about all the information she’d gotten from Ryan. She had fished for details and gotten him to open up about Panic’s split, his family issues, his relationship issues with Z, his broken friendship with Brendon, and more.

The screenshots are highly personal and disturbing, because she’s bragging about information that Ryan shared in confidence. I am not going to post everything (someone has to respect Ryan’s privacy, after all!), but this is a brief taste of the conversations:

Hannah Bear may have played along to get in Chelsey’s good books, but she immediately messaged Ryan’s then-manager Shane Morris about it, and thankfully Shane actually took her seriously. Shane broke the news to Ryan, who was embarrassed and horrified (as you can imagine), and then he got back to the worried fans—thus confirming that this actually happened.

Chelsey was not done, however, and released screenshots of several of her actual text conversations with Ryan. Again, I am not going to post them (or links to them) out of respect for Ryan. If you really want to see them, Google exists.

Chelsey also released an apology letter on Tumblr:

I’d like to apologize to Brendon Urie, for deliberately impersonating him to friends, fans and affiliates, I’d like to apologize to Ryan Ross for impersonating a long time friend and convincing him of consolation with said friend, obtaining information from him about events involving his life, music, and past. Information was shared with a few people online regarding the situation of Ryan’s friendship with Brendon Urie.

I would like to apologize to Sarah Urie for impersonating her, and her husband, and taking up her time regarding the situations involving me.

I’d like to apologize to Hannah Brown, Ronnie Morgan and any other fans I have spoken to as Brendon or about the situations involving Brendon, family members, or Ryan Ross.

I’d like to apologize to Shane Morris for involving him in this situation, and that the situation had to turn out like this.

I would also like to thank Shane Morris for not taking any legal action as long as I am to never contact Ryan Ross or any of the other band members again.

I’d like to apologize to the fanbase, for making a complete falsification of what a true fan really is, I am aware also that I am in need of therapy and medication to continue my life and move on in a healthy manner. I am sorry for lying to all of them about where I obtained certain information and where I obtained private photo’s. All private photo’s and information have been removed from my computer, all accounts have been deleted and all phone numbers or addresses have been removed as well. I severely hope there is never anything like this in the fandom again, and that it continues on healthier and stronger without fabrication and drama.

I am aware that Shane Morris has taken my contact information, and will use it in regards of me ever contacting his artist again.

I am aware that what I did was wrong, immoral, obsessive, compulsive and unhealthy. I am also aware that anyone I have wronged or convinced of my personification as Brendon Urie can take legal action against me, though I severely hope they do not.

Shane has given me a list of therapists in my city, so I can choose and speak to them, Before Shane gave me the link to said therapists I was already looking into admitting myself into a mental ward for 2 weeks. I will be keeping Shane posted on my situation regarding therapy and moving on with my life without my Monomania, Depression and Personality Disorders. I am fully aware now that what I have done is wrong, and everything that I obtained was illegal, private, and immoral. This experience has made me want to be a better person, a person that doesn’t keep up a facade, because they don’t like who they really are. I have learned that people aren’t just toys you can take out of the box and play with and put back in, they are people with feelings, lives, and goals. I am sorry for mistreating every person I’ve spoken to. I am looking forward to changing my future in the best way possible. In a way this was a good thing for me, I finally got the karma I deserved and probably needed.

I’m sorry for being a huge waste of everyone’s time, I will get better. I want to.

As you can imagine, this experience left Ryan worse for wear. His life began to spiral out of control throughout 2013, and he was clearly unwell. Shane Morris even unhelpfully spread rumors that Ryan needed to be checked into rehab.

These are his first two Instagram posts after finding out the truth in late August 2013. And, um, they’re pretty disturbing in context.

His first post-catfish selfie also showed some signs of distress:

As you can imagine, this experience may have ruined whatever chance Ryan and Brendon had of ever rekindling their friendship. It is very telling that Ryan thought he could be friends with Brendon again specifically because the person texting back was not, in fact, Brendon. This horrible betrayal of Ryan’s confidence probably gave him a chance to reevaluate whether he’d want to be friends with Brendon again.

So, when they actually ran into each other in real life at Adam Levine’s Halloween party in 2015, Brendon decided to try to be friends again.

And Ryan did not text the real Brendon back.

The girl what runs brendonurievines is a completely insane girl named Chelsey (i think she went under another name but idk what it is.) She used to/probably still does make fake profiles of Brendon Urie’s (Panic! At The Disco’s vocalist) family and friends, along with his wife’s family. She does this so she can add the two and stalk them and get personal information out of them about the band members. The photo shown above is just a snippet of the creepy things she’s said to Hannah about the pictures she stole from the Urie family’s personal facebooks. Here’s all the information in Hannah’s words (dallonsmiles)

There is a 24 year old girl in Toronto who was (and actually still is very much) stalking the band and running a blog called ipanickedatthedisco that she would post rare, never-before-seen pictures as well as private info on for months. Then around the beginning of Feb. she showed me all this shit she had and told me all this stuff… about her hacking into Sarah’s private Facebook, by making up a fake profile of one of her high school friends, and stealing all Sarah’s pictures off it.. as well as gaining access to Brendon’s brothers and sisters and parents Facebooks through similar means (fake accounts) and stealing all the pictures of Brendon or Brendon and Sarah or anything else related off them. She showed me folders and folders and folders of photos she got off those Facebooks as well as buttloads of private posts and information, such as pages and pages of Brendon’s family members’ home addresses (WTF?!?!) and showed me Brendon and Sarah’s house and car and legal documentation on Brendon and Dallon and Breezy and Brendon’s parents and Sarah’s and just EVERYTHING. She literally has EVERYTHING you could possibly get online about these people. So then I outed her, like I was just going to sit there and be like “OH COOL”?? Come on! So I posted about it here on Tumblr and told Sarah about it on Twitter and Sarah responded privately and gave me her email address so I could tell her more and give her all the info, and shit completely blew up in the fandom. She password protected the ipanickedatthedisco blog for about a month hoping things would calm down, as MANY were calling for her to delete the blog (reporting it to tumblr as well) and leave Tumblr and the fanbase altogether (cuz who wants someone like that in their fanbase? seriously?) but when she reopened the blog, she tried to act like nothing happened and posted some disclaimers on it saying things like “if you have a problem with what I do or the way I gain info and pictures, you can unfollow” like that’s acceptable? So anyway, we all continued to post about her deleting it and a SHIT load of people came forward to me privately about other extremely heinous things she’d done while pretending to be Brendon on Facebook and all kinds of other shit and I got a particularly disgusting piece of information that I could very easily have (and still could, I don’t know why she thinks she can just continue this way with the information I have) gone to an internet crimes lawyer about, and was actually very seriously planning to. I told her that, because I really didn’t want to do it and I believed she was genuinely a good person who’d just gotten in too deep, so she finally shut down the blog and the others she knew I knew about. I started talking to her on Skype and stuff and offering her support as a friend, because she was telling me she was so depressed and suicidal because she’d gotten in so deep and felt terrible and told me she’d unfollowed all the Panic! twitters, instagrams, everything and was taking a step back and going to therapy and getting herself sorted out… and I believed her, because I didn’t believe someone could be so awful to pray on my sympathies and lie that much. But I was wrong. Just a week or so after that conversation, she started posting every day, multiple times a day, on her personal blog (which is clynnk now, btw everyone) about PATD and started posting things immediately after they’d been shared on Facebook or twitter, as well as pictures no one had seen before that were showing up on Linda or Sarah’s Facebooks (she also runs/ran the fuckyeahlindaignarro blog, idk if it’s still up) before anyone else had seen them… meaning she was actively stalking these pages to check for new things. So I messaged her about it saying you know, hey I thought you told me you were taking a step back and distancing yourself to try and get better? And she had the audacity to tell me she “had an addiction” and “everyone with addictions have relapses”…. as if BEING OBSESSED WITH A BAND IS AN ADDICTION. I’m sorry, but that REALLY pissed be off, because plenty of people deal with REAL addiction, including people I’m very close to and Spencer Smith himself, so that’s incredibly insulting.

So after that I tried to just ignore it until I saw the brendonurievines blog pop up and start posting every day, several times a day… and I knew it was her. I brought it up and she admitted it was her. Then I noticed she had created this sandburie blog that was made up to seem as if it was actually being run by Brendon and/or Sarah, no indication whatsoever anywhere that it was a fan blog, and it in fact says “Share our love” on it… as if it’s supposed to look like it’s their blog. Anyway, I saw never-before-seen photos of Sarah popping up on there, and called her out on it and she immediately deleted them so no one else would see or I guess believe me, idk what she was trying to do there. She had emailed Sarah (by obtaining her private email address via her Facebook that she shouldn’t have ever had access to) to apologize for everything, which is one of the things that makes me the angriest. She gave a completely insincere and bullshit apology to one of the sweetest people alive when she actually had no plans of stopping the stalking and never did stop. 

Sarah tweeted a link to a fake Sarah Facebook a month or so ago and asked people to report it because the person was trying to add her family and friends on it to get more photos… that was Chelsey. She deleted the FB after Sarah tweeted about it. I’m not sure about the other members of Brendon’s family she had created fake accounts for, I haven’t checked recently to see if they’re still up… but this girl is positively insane.

I wish so fucking badly I could somehow let EVERYONE in the fanbase know about this girl and what she’s done and that she runs these blogs, because the fact that she’s getting followers and likes and reblogs is giving her more and more strength and motivation to do more of what she’s doing. 

She also hacked Shane Valdes (Brendon’s best friend) Facebook last year and Sarah confirmed this, telling me he’d lost access to his Facebook for a few months. During that time, Chelsey somehow managed to get Ryan Ross’s phone number and has been texting him AS BRENDON URIE ever since. I don’t think it’s still going on, I sure HOPE not, I hope Ryan wouldn’t be that naïve. But while she did that, she gorged incredibly deep and personal information out of Ryan about his family, his childhood, his life, and his relationship with Brendon and the band as a whole. It sickens me to my core that she lied to Ryan, making him think he was going to get to record a song with Brendon when it wasn’t even Brendon at all.

So yeah. This girl is completely crazy and she needs to be stopped. These are the blogs that she runs that we know of.

In every Southern state (didn’t have time to look at the rest of the country) you can find some sort of studio apartment for around $500 per month, sometimes less than that. Why bother lying about something so easily disproven?

Things like this really tick me off and It’s not political or anything but it’s the fact that you think all that money is there. Here’s what I mean;

That weekly check comes to, according to you, 290. Most places DO NOT pay for your half hour lunch that is required by law. So your beginning number was wrong. $7.25 x 7.5 hours a day x 5 days a week only gets you $271.88.  Most people in America get paid bi-weekly, so let’s double it to get the budget. $543.75. That’s GROSS, not NET. Out of that comes anywhere between 10% and 15% taxes depending on state so we’ll low ball it at 10%. Automatically down to $489.38 a pay check. Now health insurance. Usually anywhere from 70-100 a pay check for the cheapest plans. Again, we’ll low ball and go $70. So now we have $419.39 a paycheck. x 2  = $839. 

Eight hundred thirty nine dollars. A MONTH.

But again, you seem to think that’s fair. So let’s proceed. You say rent is $500? Okay. This person now has $339 left to buy groceries for the whole month, pay utilities, car payment, car insurance, and gas money to get to work. 

Those are the bare needs. You have to eat. You have to pay for heat, water, garbage removal, gas and or electricity because apartments do not always include things and rarely all of the above. Most cities in America do not have public transportation. Mine doesn’t despite the fact that our population is over 15,000 people, not counting a taxi. If you have a car, you have to pay that. If you have a car, legally you have to have car insurance. You have to pay that. You have to have gas in that car to get to work to make that money.

Now if you can tell me you can get all of that out of $339 you’re lying.

You are so focused on rent that you aren’t thinking about everything else people have to pay for. Rent was an example. This is a breakdown of the budget you gave me and it’s not possible to live off that in 2017 America. 

And BECAUSE this person makes over $800 a month, they probably won’t qualify for financial aid or food stamps. $800 is the line in my state where they won’t help you. No food stamps, financial aid, or government housing if you make more than $800 a month. 

Why does it bother you that people deserve to live above the poverty line?
