Why The Flash Drive is Empty: or it might as well be

in ACD Sherlock Holmes canon the Agra box turned out to be empty.

When Mary says to John, ‘don’t read it in front of me.’

And he says, ‘why?’

And she says, ‘because you won’t love me when you’re finished and I don’t want to see that happen’,

John makes a face. This face,

This face is one of contemptuous amusement. This face says, ‘are you fucking kidding me?’ Why? Because a) she already saw that happen here,

And b) there’s nothing that could possible be in the AGRA flash drive that would be worse than what he already knows. Nothing is worse than her shooting and nearly killing Sherlock and they all know that.

Mary knows that, ‘that’, already happened. She already saw that happen. Now, she’s trying to back-pedal by pretending that it hasn’t already just in case there’s a chance. But, they both know that’s not true.

This is why the AGRA flash drive is empty: because no matter what’s in it, nothing is worse than what John already knows. He cannot think any less of her, she’s already done the lowest possible thing that she could have done to him.

This is why it doesn’t matter if he read it. He already knows everything he needs to know. No additional information could ever be pivotal or even relevant to his opinion of her.

I agree with your conclusions, especially that John has made up his mind about Mary long before he does or doesn’t read the key.

I’ve been thinking about all this since I read The Sign of the Four: the Agra treasure box in ACD was empty b/c Jonathan Small, who stole it back from Sholto, dumped the treasure in a river just before Holmes and Watson caught him. ACD’s Mary Morstan was cheated of her fortune (“cheated”) because Sholto stole it from Mary’s father and Jonathan Small, who in turn stole it from Indian royalty. The treasure was never really Mary’s in the first place, but she was implicated in the Agra treasure deal b/c Sholto’s kids perceived that her father should have had his share of Sholto’s dirty deal. (Sholto is so not a nice guy in ACD!)

Possible Series 4 riffs on this (i.e., pure speculation):

The AGRA key is empty.

The AGRA key contains code-encrypted information, disguised as “true facts” about Mary’s past, that actually lead to some kind of treasure trove of information or money or some other kind of wealth, and she’s passed it on to John for some kind of safekeeping or to paint an even bigger target on his back.

The AGRA key contains code-encrypted info that Mary can’t figure out, and she’s passed it on the John in the hope that he’ll share the information with Sherlock and crack the code for her.

Sholto will be coming back in some significant way.

Hey, this is like a parallel between Mary and Irene, then. Both would be giving Sherlock a code they need cracked for their own purposes. Something that benefits them and screws Sherlock/Mycroft over.
