I really have no idea what was going through my mind
That is the first word which comes to mind when someone looks at Wilson. It isn't without reason, either, the oncologist seems to radiate pure energy, sheltering people in his broken wings.
He never lets the others know that they are broken, because all Wilson has ever known to do is comfort people. Keep them safe, keep them warm. His wings may be broken, but they never fail him.
On the days when it's the hardest to smile, when he can barely keep up the façade of positivity, that's when his wings start to show signs of their true appearance as well. He keeps them hidden behind forced smiles, kind words, gentle touches. It's just for the day, he promises himself, and true to his word, he's alright the next day.
Wilson doesn't know how long he can do this. But he can't ask for help. After all, he's the person who's supposed to help. If he fails, how will he protect those who can’t protect themselves?
Gregory House has long dreamt of flying. His own wings are strong, yet one of them is stunted, crippling his ability to stay in the air. He has tried numerous times to balance himself, but he can’t do it alone. He hates his weakness, channeling the negativity and rage into his own personality. Demon is what they call him, because they can’t see his fallen pride.
He paid the price for his choices. The punishment rendered him unable to fly.
Wilson doesn’t think that about him. Wilson, with the broken wings and pained eyes, who smiles despite his sadness and offers warmth despite the coldness he feels from within. He’s the exact opposite of House.
So why does House feel for him?
It’s an inexplicable feeling of empathy, of care, of fierce protectiveness. It’s a heated feeling, rising from his stomach to his cheeks, filling them with the rush of crimson blood. It’s a feeling that he hasn’t felt in a long time, and that he wishes he could preserve forever. Because the smile that Wilson brings to his face is reminiscent of the moon shining as brightly as a star.
The first time he kisses Wilson, the air changes around them, abruptly weightless. House is flying, and for the first time, he doesn’t have to worry about his limp wing weighing him down.
Wilson can’t help but laugh, fresh tears springing to his eyes as his broken wings hold their own, sharing the burden of flight. He can be happy without guilt, free without iron chains around his ankles.
They’re not alone. They will never be, as long as they keep each other soaring through the air.
