once again thinking about anger in the context of supernatural… the way that it materialised in individual characters but especially in sam and dean’s (i wrote this on an instagram post once but i think tumblr is a better place for it)
angry sam is so special because it shows just how much dean took the brunt of consequences. as an older sibling, i'm filled with rage because i don't want my younger brother to suffer the consequences of my parents' abuse.
but sam was raised by a kind boy who cared so deeply that it settled in sam’s soul like a weighted blanket - his big brother - and he's ALLOWED to be angry. not just by human impulse but allowed, in the presence of others, to feel emotions.
in the earlier seasons, as an adult, his anger is punished. he grows more and more numb. he grows tired. the anger in sam sparked and burst into flame but it fizzled out as the toll of holding it became heavier and the guilt of his own soul outweighed the anger at the world.
dean on the other hand started to take on more and more, and anger became his foremost emotion. dean has always been protective but that concern translated to anger because he had more and more to protect as time went on. they're both deeply angry individuals.
sam's fire burnt him to ashes. dean's consumed him whole until he could only taste grief.
