last fall after i finally watched merlin for the first time and lost my whole mind, merthur microfic was one of the first communities i found and joined. i picked a prompt and actually finished a writing project for the first time in years (and something for a fandom for the first time since like 2013). it was just a silly little reincarnation story that i wrote bc i couldn’t stop thinking about how merthur’s dynamic would shift and the ways arthur would struggle (specifically with language) after he popped out of avalon. then i unintentionally wrote three more

In hindsight I wonder if arthur from the start liked how merlin talked back to him but just pretended he was annoyed by it.

Afterall, he could have easily fired him or had him jailed at any time. I think he just liked soneone brave enough to talk back to him like a equal

Even if it does come across as a old married couple bickering.

The first thing Arthur does when he sees Merlin again is kiss him.

It’s the wrong thing to do, he knows, especially when Merlin is too shocked (or disoriented, maybe) to kiss him back. But what else can Arthur do? He’s watched Merlin for over a millennia from behind a veil.
