Street art in Portland
So many brilliant retro signs in Portland, Oregon.
A few things that caught my eye shopping in Tokyo. Cushions for toilet seats, cats in sushi, and a whole set of books where you can (geekily) record your experiences of curry, ramen, railways, encounters with cats, souvenir purchases.
Godzilla rock
A collection of Japanese manhole covers from Tohoku
We stayed at the beautiful Notoya ryokan at Ginzan onsen. A tiny town on a gushing river just downstream from a waterfall.
Aizu Wakamatsu. Samurai houses, a castle, cherry blossom, a fantastically designed temple, an interesting shopping street. Lovely town
Ouchi-juku, a beautiful traditional post town in the mountains of Fukushima prefecture.
Hula girls at Fukushima station
Another day of looking at pretty flowers and watching a huge group of Japanese people take LOTS of photos of blossoms. Today we were at Hanamiyama in Fukushima. Cherry blossom bloomed early this year so we were a little late but it was still stunning. As well as the sakura there were tulips and roses. But no other gaijin except us.
Took a trip to Yanaka, a lovely old part of Tokyo. It's home to a lot of temples and a charming traditional shopping street. We picked a good time to visit as the azaleas at Nezu shrine were in full bloom and gorgeous.
Cherry blossom season is pretty much over in Tokyo but Shinjuku gyoen still has some beautiful late flowering trees. And plenty of people photographing them, sitting under them and oohing and aahing over them. Just gorgeous.
